      Canadian Pacific (1949)

Well, It's wildly inaccurate LOL but if you take it for what it is it's an okay little western starring Randolph Scott. It's got your usual love story elements and people against the railroad trying to bust it up. it's light entertainment and while it's not one of Scott's best it's certainly not one of his worst.

In the Loop. Didn't see this one coming, it was unforeseeable. Pretty funny movie, enjoyed it a lot.

I saw "Sin Nombre" last night, and thought it was a well done movie. The movie was pretty good although depressing. It reminded me a lot of "City of God"

                  Saddle The Wind (1958)

Did you know the great Rod Serling wrote a western? Yep, it's true and this one is fairly boilerplate until the very end. Here's the summary:

Steve Sinclair (Robert Taylor) is a world-weary former gunslinger, now living as a peaceful farmer. Things go wrong when his wild younger brother Tony (John Cassavetes) arrives on the scene with his new bride Joan Blake (Julie London).
Wild is putting putting it mildly. Tony Sinclair is so wild one wonders how he didn't get himself into trouble a lot earlier in life. The wildness and borderline insanity driven characterization by Cassavetes almost ruins the film for me.

Anyways he comes to live with his brother and brings along a woman he barely knows but who he's determined to marry. At first she doesn't like Steve at all because she believes that Steve made Tony this way by being a former gunfighter and exposing Tony to that kind of life. She soon realizes (though you hardly see it as Julie London's part is severely underwritten) that Steve is a good guy who's looking out for the best for his brother.

Well, a gunfighter named Venables comes looking for Steve but Tony goes in half cocked picking a fight and gets off a lucky shot which kills Venables. This leads Tony to think even more highly of himself and becoming even MORE wilder. Steve has to go to talk to the main owner of all their land as it's an open range. The owner is one Mr. Deneen played to great effect by Donald Crisp. Deneen hates violence of any kind and in no uncertain terms tells Steve he doesn't want to see that kind of stuff happening again.

Steve and Joan go home after this and they air their differences (in a pretty good scene where you see the world weariness of the Steve character) and they run into squatters or so they think. The squatter and his family actually own the strip of land but Steve talks them into leaving the next day. Well predictably Tony busts in and almost kills the guy and his family which Steve sees and he has to fight his brother off. This leads to the squatter wanting the land now.

He goes to Deneen and demands to be given protection to buy the materials. Deneen tries to buy him off but it's to no avail and Deneen reluctantly agrees. This all leads up to a final conflict between Steve and Tony as Deneen comes to Steve and explains the situation and Steve decides that maybe it's for the best.

The situation escalates and we see a final showdown between the brothers. The ending is pretty powerful stuff and overall the movie is very well written. Robert Taylor gives a low key performance that accentuates his world weariness which contrasts well with Cassavetes acting like a damn fool. The movie has some nice character moments and some pretty good dialogue so it seems Rod Serling was at home in the western genre and the scenery is just wonderful.

I give this 2 1/2 stars out of 4. I'd normally give it 3 stars but Cassavetes' overblown histrionics puts it down just a peg.
