Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

Just saw Slingblade a la the Netflix instant watch. Really intriguing character played by BB Thornton. Dwight Yoakam is a damn good actor too. As I was watching it, it hit me that this was the Thornton/Lucas Black team-up pre-cursor to Friday Night Lights. That must have been cool to act with someone you worked with when he was just a kid. It also made me realized that Lucas Black was the main little redneck ****head in The War. Never knew.

re: Slingblade..... curious and unique flick. Definitely worth a look. A handwriting was on the wall kind of film, but still good even though it was telegraphed.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

I'm going to mention one movie I saw a while back and one I saw this morning.

The first is The Grapes of Wrath that movie is the definition of classic right there. One of the best movies i've eve seen and to see how some people in America were treated during the Great Depression was very shocking even though it was toned down. (tho i'm sure it freaked everyone out at the theatres at the time) Henry Fonda as Tom Joad was the perfect mix of an angry man but one who just wants to see him and his family treated right and to get a decent chance to start over after the dust bowl forced his family off the land.

Very heartfelt movie and one that is ripe for a remake today as the original ending of the book certainly couldn't have been done back then.

      Spoiler

The other movie I saw this morning was The Whistler which was an interesting film in which a businessman is so distraught that his wife is missing and presumed dead that he puts a contract out on himself. He then finds out that she's alive and he wants to stop the contracted killing but can't and so he's trying to save himself before the time limit. (he said the killing had to be down by "next friday") It was a pretty suspenseful smaller budget film seeing that it came from Columbia but it was well done with Richard Dix as the businessman and J. Carroll Naish as the hit man.

The ending was the typical "just desserts" type of thing for movies back then but it was a very good ride for most of its runtime.

        Trick R Treat

ust saw the movie, definitely awesome. Really not something that's going to terrify you, but it will certainly make you think a little; it'll make Halloween day feel scarier then it should. However the last story was definitely the most interesting in terms of scare-factor. If the whole movie had been based solely on that event, would of definitely been scarier.

The acting was good and the intertwining stories were interesting as well, but some of it was strange due to the timing of everything. Like the story about the teacher taking place during the beginning while the story of the girl being stalked was after. But once you understood it though, it was good.

Watching the movie wasn't as scary as i thought it was going to be, but later thinking back on it and talking about it, it seemed sort of scary; again, especially that last story. Good movie though....i guess i can see why no studio decided to pick it up for a theathre release (all the children.....) in the movie

Yeah, off topic but, Lucas Black grew up like 45 minutes away from where I did. We actually played Basketball against him (He went to Speake and I went to another small school called Hackleburg). He was in 10th grade when I was a senior so, he really didn't get on the court too much from what I remember. I guess it's no big deal however, I thought you might find that interesting.

I watched Klepto on Netfilx. It was a lot better than I expected. I liked it a lot.

Lucas Black needs to be cast well. He's limited into that small town countrified sombre character and I don't know if he can do much more than that. But I liked him in FNL (in my top 3 sports movies undoubtedly).

...and a stronger support cast would have put it over the top.

FINALLY saw Star Trek (2009) I gotta say I was impressed. It's certainly not my style of Trek but as a means to open up the franchise to a wider audience while keeping the essence of Trek they did a good job. They did a great job of rebooting the timeline without making it complicated to newcomers and I thought all the actors hit the mark.

Seeing Leonard Nimoy in what is more then likely his last ever on screen appearance was pretty damn good but he sure looked frail and it was hard to hear every word he spoke at times. I hope he's doing ok health wise.

I just hope that in the next film they cut down on the action just a tad and focus a little more on the technical/sci fi/morality play aspects of the Star Trek universe as that is what makes Star Trek stand out from other space epics IMO.

                            Is he sick or something?

Nimoy says he would be very happy to reprise the role of Ambassador Spock in the sequel "Of course, of course", he says enthusiastically "If the phone rings again, and its J.J. calling to talk about another project, I'm more than willing to enter a discussion about it, and explore it with him. I have the feeling that my involvement has run its course - but then again, I've had that feeling many times before. I've felt that I was finished with all this, so this was a very pleasant surprised to be called back after all these years and be able to make a contribution here. If it happens again, I would glady work for him again."

Just wondering why you think this will most likely be his last appearance.

I enjoyed the movie as well, saw it last weekend.

I don't know. I was just saying what came off the top of my head. I'm sure he'd do well in the next movie if they decide to bring him in. There just seemed to be a finality to the role IMO.
