Whip It - I really enjoyed this. It was funny, clever and I thought the relationships were developed really well. I really like watching Ellen in films, something about her is just charming to me. I don't think I would date her or anything, but she seems like the type of girl I would just want to hang out with and talk about music, movies, and random **** with. Now, time to start going to some roller derbies.

Let The Right One In - Awesome film. Oskar and Eli were both wonderful and their chemistry was obvious from the start. A very interesting take what it means to be a vampire, I thought. Plus I liked the subtle effect that was given to Eli and basically having two "forms." Definitely recommend this one to all horror fans.

They are remaking Let the Right One In this October for the US. I was almost shocked that it was being remade, and I'm sure it'll be butchered.

Terribly Happy (subtitles) - Denmark/Swedish drama..... a bit Hitchcockian. Very quirky...curious. I worried about the ending, but I think the whole movie worked. I'd like to see the lead get some other main stream offers. I could see him being a good supporting actor in a larger cast.

Watched Prince of Persia last night. Bit of a snoozefest imo. It was an ok movie but nothing to enthralling and I didn't love Jake Gyllenhaall in the main role. Pretty much what i expected though: 6 out of 10 from me.

Star in the Dust (1956)

The sheriff of Gunlock is planning to hang Sam Hall, who shot three farmers found on cattle land, at sundown. At the casino, betting is 8 to 3 he won't make it. The cattlemen are set to rescue Sam; the farmers hope to lynch him before he can be rescued; and Hall schemes for escape with his girl Nellie. But Sheriff Jorden is most concerned with finding out who hired Hall: a leading suspect is the sheriff's future brother-in-law.
A real uneventful western with not much of anything interesting going on. I should've known this was going to be blah when I saw the star was John Agar who was one of the most wooden and most bland actors you'd ever see. The movie was saved IMO from boring me to tears by a couple good character actors whom I enjoy seeing on screen.

The Orphanage - I thought this was great and touching in a way that usually doesn't come across in "horror/thriller" films. It was definitely creepy and great characters. I recommend to anyone who likes horror films.

The Exorcist - first time I've seen it. Thankfully I don't get scared from these kinds of things anymore. I can understand why it was a big deal back then. Now, obviously after countless imitations and advances in the genre, **** scenes are no longer that scary. But the story is good enough to make it a nice watch today.

The Other Guys - hilarious. Wasn't too crazy about the plot but the funny was there in bunches. One line that really killed me was something small while a scene was fading out: "at the crimescene, LOL"... "Nice tweet".

I finally got to finish this as well. It's definitely in the vein of GDToro's storytelling style for those who have seen Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone. He's just good.

The newer Robin Hood w/ Russel Crow - Eh, not really feeling this rendition.

Green Zone - Not bad

RockandRolla - pretty damn good. Typical Richie movie but can't wait for the sequel.

Watched Pontypool last night...one of the weirdest frickin' movies I've ever seen.

Alright I guess, just bizarre as hell.

Saw Bounty Hunter (Gerard Butler, Jen Anniston) last night. If i could pick one word to describe the movie it would 'meh'. Nothing too worth watching here imo, not terrible but nothing particularly great either. 5.5/10 from me.

Castle on the Hudson (1940)

Mobster Tommy Gordon isn't worried about being sentenced to Sing Sing prison because his political pals have promised him a quick parole. A troublesome prisoner, he finally concedes that his friends have deserted him, and he makes an effort to reform. When his girlfriend Kay is injured in an accident, Warden Long gives Tommy a pass to go see her. But trouble erupts when Tommy encounters the man responsible for his imprisonment
The summary above plays a little fast and loose with the facts but it's basically what the movie's about. This is a remake of a movie done 7 years earlier starring Spencer Tracy which was a classic in the prison film genre (20,000 years in Sing-Sing) John Garfield plays the title role in this and his rendition of the main character is a lot more brassy and with attitude then Tracy who gave the character a bit more dimension. Here in the remake Garfield comes across as a guy doing Cagney and being quite broad in his acting. Nonetheless the story wasn't changed much if at all so it was entertaining enough. Pat O'Brien does his usual fine job as the tough but good hearted warden.

One thing of note though is a young Burgess Meredith playing a fellow prisoner who cooks up a breakout scheme that Garfield agrees to but then backs out of. Meredith doesn't get a lot of screen time but he maximizes what he's given and you come away remembering him.

Anyways I give this a solid 2 stars. I've seen the original and that is around 3 stars mainly due to the fact that Tracy does a better job in the lead role and the relationship between he and the warden comes across better specifically because both actors played their roles in earnest. I'm not saying Pat O'Brien did a bad job but there wasn't really a strong connection between he and Garfield mainly due to how broadly Garfield played his part.
