Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I still can't believe that that film received some Golden Globe nominations. Granted, the GG's don't mean too much but still, no way this movie was anywhere close to being award material.Currently Playing:

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched two movies last night/this morning.
Iron Man 2 - Not nearly as bad as I was expecting based on the negative things I heard about it. It definitely wasn't as good as the first one but it at least holds up. Going in I figured this was going to approach Spider-Man 3 levels of bad but it didn't at all. Also, Scarlett....
Warrior - Incredible movie. Great story, great characters, and a great representation of MMA in movie form. It's one of those movies that you don't even realize is long (it's a little over 2 hours) because you get so into it.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I came into the Hunger Games with very low expectations and came away loving the film. The performances were all top notch and even the one character who was way over the top (Stanley Tucci's TV host character) was charming in his own way. Woody Harrelson stole the movie for me with his portrayal of Katniss' and Peeta's mentor Haymich. I thought he brought a little bit of humor and I liked the evolution of his character as a total drunkard who eventually sees Katniss' value and fights to get her to succeed in the games.
The movie's structure kinda reminded me of those old gladiatorial epics where you get to know the combatants, see them train and get into the training and finally the combat. There were a couple things I didn't quite understand but for the most part this movie is very accessible and what I didn't understand my GF explained to me.
I do wish thatSpoilerKatniss' interaction with Rue during the games was a little more expansive. I understand that Katniss and Rue did have more of an interaction in the book though.
One aspect of the movie I liked a lot was that it had some societal commentary buried beneath it. Basically the thrust is that even in a post nuclear (or whatever) society the world still goes ga ga for "reality TV" however I did like the fact that the medium was used to strike back against the ruling elite especially in the sceneSpoilerafter Rue died and Katniss thoughtfully decorates Rue's body with flowers and such and she gives the respect symbol which the people reciprocate which sets off a riot in Rue's district.
I do like that the characters were pretty fleshed out and actually GREW as the film went along. Katniss started out as a total bitch but eventually became a woman with a conscience and warmth. Peeta starts out as a bit of a tough cookie but he softens up and actually shows that he has true feelings and a warm heart.
So yeah this movie really impressed me and I give it my recommendation. 4 out of 5 stars.
The only real gripe I have is that the movie ended with such a blatant "wait for the sequel" type ending.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

There were too many minor changes (I just finished the book then saw the movie) that bugged me. I know the movies aren't exact word-for-word from the book, but imo, some important parts were altered or deleted that would've added more context.Currently Playing:

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Finally saw Moneyball. Man...that was really good storytelling. They did embellish THAT game a bit, but that's okay. Great epilogue scenes x2.
Very small
...vvv....
SpoilerOne nitpick is that I wasn't happy with the David Justice portrayal.Last edited by daflyboys; 05-09-2012, 05:51 PM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Apocalypse Now - For me, this is probably Coppola's second best film edging out Godfather 2. Brando's presence is reminiscent of Orson Welles' in The Third Man perhaps even elevating above that. You know a **** ton about the man, but the more you know the less you know for sure. We're pretty much walking in step with Captain Willard from the moment The End ends. As with Willard, the more we further we progress the crazier everyone else around us becomes, but never us. Perhaps the one character who consistently acted rationally and logically, but those same actions seemingly feel the opposite. Something tugs at you with each hack of Kurtz despite how rationally sound it was in the beginning "with all the facts."
Plus, this movie is just beautiful to watch and listen to.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Saw Born to Race on netflix. I though, "Oh another stupid racing movie" I just wanted to see what cars were in it but I was actually surprised and enjoyed the film.
It has the made for tv feel and the story is predictable. Basically its Karate Kid meets Fast and Furious 3 but I gotta say the cars were sick and actually authentic. A ton of races also which is nice if your a race fan. It didn't hurt that the main car in the movie was my car an 04 aspen white Subaru Sti.
I really like how it was a mix of domestic and imports and the cars were setup just like cars you would see car people would make not all flashy show cars like Fast and the Furious cars.Comment

Contraband
I thought Wahlberg did another fine job acting, decent supporting actors as well. I thought it was a great movie, their actually wasn't as much action as I initially thought there was going to be going in. With that said it still lived up my expectations, as the story was very well done. One of those typical crime type of movie where everything is put together at the end and it makes you go wow.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I watched Drive last night....
WTFH!? That had to be one of the worst movies i've seen in some time. Everything from the music to the direction to the listless acting of Ryan Gosling made this movie a total snore. This gets a lot of positive reviews from IMDB but i'm not seeing it. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it?
Even my girlfriend who's a big Gosling fan hated it but made us watch the entire thing thus putting a sour note to our evening. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
So I've never seen the Alien movies before. Started watching earlier this week. Loved Alien, Aliens, and even liked Alien 3. Then I pop in Alien: Resurrection to finish the series. About halfway through, my PS3 shuts off by itself. Tried to turn it back on, got the message saying I didn't shut it off correctly, then boom ... shuts off again. Now everytime I go to turn the PS3 on, I get the yellow light of death. So essentially, Alien: Resurrection killed my PS3. I now hate that movie.Comment
