Re: What movies have you seen recently?
If I read this before seeing the film, then saw the film, I would feel misled.
Actually, maybe not so much on the violence, but it doesn't quite come in the way/pace that I expected.
The opening was one of the most compelling scenes for me. Again, I don't hate the film or anything, but I think other people are seeing something in it that I'm not. I can even sell it to myself in words, but the end result is just not enough for me, I guess.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

But I won't go on about it. You guys know how I feel about Drive."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I understand where you're coming from, however. I felt like the action was so well done that it left you wanting a **** ton more of it. The juxtaposition of those short, quick hitting action scenes and the long, silent moments was quite astonishing. It is like worlds colliding. Still, I loved it for those reasons. I thought it did everything well. It was like a salad mixture of things and hit them all out of the park for me.
Still, I would very much welcome a higher action ratio on any future sequel.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
[Rec 3] Genesis: If you watched the first 2 [Rec] movies and like how it was shot then you can expect something different on the third installment of this series. The director didn't put too much emphasis on the "handheld" camera shots like you would see in the first two movies or in films like "Cloverfield", "The Blair Witch Project", and "Paranormal Activity".
With that said I am very disappointed in [Rec 3] and that's coming from a guy who loved [Rec] 1 & 2. I was real excited when I found out there was going to be a part 3 and maybe that is why I was left with huge disappointments but this movie sucked. I am not going to spoil it for you guys out there but take my word for it do not waste your money on this movie. If it's free on netflix watch it for yourself but don't buy it.
Overall I give this movie a 4/10.Comment

Jeff, Who Lives At Home- A bit slow, but you get a nice payoff. A Solid B+ movie. Added bonus of how great it looks on Blu Ray.Comment

Ballin' at the Graveyard.
A doc about pickup basketball in Albany, NY. The courts in Washington Park were once a graveyard site, hence the name. They never mention this in the film, and that is the only negative.
Otherwise, the trash-talking, hard fouls, nice shooting and everything else about pickup hoops is perfectly captured. The personal stories of the main characters were captivating.Currently Playing:

Superman, watched it with the family and it's been awhile(I don't think I've ever seen it all the way through before). Reeve was a superb actor imo.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

JFK - Just...wow. Excellent film, with two of the most amazing monologues I've ever seen on film (Donald Sutherland in the park and Costner in the courtroom).
This movie was so 'packed' that I need to see it again to comprehend it fully. From an idealogical standpoint, it's the scariest movie I've ever seen.GO 'HAWKS!

Man on a String (1960)
Renowned director Andre De Toth (House of Wax) actually got permission to go into East Berlin and Moscow to film much of this pulse-pounding Cold War thriller, based on actual events. Academy Award®-winner Ernest Borgnine (1955, Best Actor, Marty) gives one of his finest performances as a Russian-born movie producer (inspired by composer Boris Morros) whose background makes him an ideal counterspy for the “CBI.” He agrees to the deception, and, aided by agent Avery (Kerwin Mathews, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), he pretends to defect — but how long can he keep up the charade? The crackerjack cast also includes Colleen Dewhurst, Alexander Scourby, Glenn Corbett and in bit parts, Ted Knight (in his film debut) and Seymour Cassel.
Borgnine did a very good job of showing his character having been sucked into working for the Commies and then having to work for the US as a counter spy. He even finds out that his top man at his movie studio was really a US agent and had to reconcile with him in order to complete the mission.
Kerwin Mathews who plays that agent did a pretty good job in his role but it was Borgnine's film all the way. The only flaw was that for a guy born in Russia he didn't even try to effect a Russian accent which was odd as a few years later in the movie Ice Station Zebra he did use an accent. I guess the reasoning was to make it more relatable to US audiences "shrug"
Andre De Toth decided to go with a semi-documentary feel for the film which gives it an air of reality but also lent itself to the omniscient narrator issue that some movies of this type has. It did slide away about halfway through the movie though Borgnine's character did do some narration during the mini travelogue scenes of Moscow.
I give this about 3 stars out of 4. This was recently released via the Warner Brothers Archive Collection if anyone is interested in obtaining it.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
