Watch [REC] 2 instead. It's an actual sequel.

But stay away from [REC] 3 because it's awful.

            Amazing Spider Man - 9/10

Third time watching this now, and I'm as big a fan of it as I was the first time I saw it. I feel like a lot of people thought it was just 'meh', but I really enjoy it. Maybe it's because of the sour taste left by Spiderman 3, but the characters were infinitely better in TASM.

Now I just need to pick up the Blu Ray. Thankfully Starz has been playing it regularly for the past month or so.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Cranking up the ol' wayback machine for what turned out to be the perfect flick for a restful Sunday.

              Wild Bill Hickok Rides (1942)

              Plot Summary:

Belle Andrews' (Constance Bennett) gambling hall burns down in the Chicago fire of 1871 and, now penniless, she accepts Harry Farrel's (Warren William) invitation to accompany him to Powder River, Wyoming, to open a gambling casino. Farrel has plans to get control of all the land in Powder River by hiring henchmen to file claims on the land, a proceeding overlooked by the settlers. On the stagecoach to Powder River, they meet Wild Bill Hickok (Bruce Cabot). Once there, Farrel has his claim jumpers go to work, and even has Ned Nolan (Russell Simpson) convicted of a framed-up murder charge, and fixes the jury just to be safe. Hickok then begins to organize the settlers to fight back against Farrel.
This flick is a step up from the usual Saturday Matinee back in the day as it was a major B WB film. Even so, the purpose was exactly the same as those Saturday Matinees as this movie emphasizes action over plot. In fact, there are a couple glaring plot holes in this but it's more than made up by the acting and brisk pace. It's something I'd hold against a movie trying to be more than what it is but in this case it goes down fine.

Bruce Cabot does a pretty good job as Hickok which isn't too surprising as he'd become one of "Wayne's Regulars" who worked with John Wayne in many a western so this isn't unfamiliar territory for him. The one big typing against cast actor in this was Warren William who was known for playing charming scoundrels or characters who were just too smart for their own good. He did play some "good" guys as well too as he was the very original Perry Mason. Here he just doesn't quite fit in a western but whenever he gets a chance to turn on his devious charm you almost forget that he's out of his element.

I wasn't so impress by Constance Bennett as the gambling queen with a heart of gold. First of all, she had a bit of an accent that I couldn't quite place and it would sometimes fade in and out. It almost seemed like she was trying for a midwestern accent but it didn't come across well. She had the top billing in this flick but aside from warning Hickok about what Farrel was up to she didn't do too much.

The movie did have a couple of neat character roles such as Janey who was Ned's adoptive daughter. She was a bit rough around the edges with her fast talkin' ways and obviously was smitten over Hickok in a youthful girl way. The other character role was the very nervous town newspaper man and jack of all trades Tweed under Farrel's employ played effectively by William Cattlett. A lot of the humor in the movie came from him such as when he was shaving Hickok and went on about how he's gonna run Hickok out of town and bragging about how great a shot he is. Only to be challenged on that and when he refused to, Hickok went ahead and shot up the weather vane and said HE was Hickok which prompted Tweed to jump out of the barbershop window!

The movie had a real nice climax as well with a great gunfight and a dam being blown to smithereens. This movie was black/white as it comes but sometimes having something simple like that can be fun. I rather enjoyed it in the spirit it was intended.

It's certainly not art, but it's entertaining!

I saw Marley and Me last night. But it was so late, that I missed the last half-our or so of the movie (I was too tired to watch it to the end). I suppose I missed the best part...?

I'll catch it when it's on again.

Watching Anaconda. One of the first cheesy sci-fi flicks I ever watched. It has a decent cast with Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, Jon Voight, Jonathan Hyde, and a short appearance by Danny Trejo.

And it's extremely cheesy. One of Ice Cube's first lines is "It's a good day!" clearly alluding to his song.

The Croods 3D - I typically don't opt for 3D at the theater but seeing as how I had a $25 giftcard I figured why the hell now. Animation in 3D is pretty cool and I definitely prefer that than live-action as the animation just seems a lot more vivid and fluid. As for the movie its not on the level of Pixar or other great recent animation films like HTTYD or Despicable Me, but it was fun and I caught myself laughing with the kids in the audience.

It was alright. May have meant more to me if I had watched the 6 movies before these last 2. The 3D didn't add much.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Somehow I got myself into watching this....

                          Somewhere in Time (1980)

I had heard of the movie a long time ago and knew there was a romance component to it but didn't realize just how MUCH it was a central theme to the movie nonetheless, I actually kind of enjoyed it.

                          Plot Summary:

The movie opens with college student Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) gathering rave reviews for his new play. At the party, he comes face to face with an old woman who presses something in his hand and whispers, "Come back to me." He opens his hand to find an old pocket watch. Cut to several years later. Playwright Collier is in the midst of a break-up and writers block. He leaves the city for awhile to think things out and finds himself near his alma mater at the Grand Hotel. While wandering around the hotel, he finds a photograph of a beautiful young woman. Richard is entranced, and tries to find out all he can about her. During the course of his research he learns she was Elise McKenna, (Jane Seymour) an actress from the turn of the century. He also discovers that she was the mysterious old woman who gave him the watch. Finally determining that he must meet her somehow, he employs self-hypnosis and wills himself back to 1912. He meets Elise and they fall in love, which does not make her manager, William Fawcett Robinson, (Christopher Plummer) happy at all. Will their love survive Robinson's disapproval? Will Richard be able to stay in 1912?
This is by no means a perfect movie as it moves at a turgid pace and the music wonderfully scored and conducted by John Barry plays a HUGE role in setting the mood becoming an integral part of the film. Reeve does a pretty good job in his role and it's very interesting to see Superman in such a different kind of role. The scenes set in 1912 were done in a very authentic way as it really DID feel like that time period. The problem with this movie is that while there is conflict (Robinson wants to completely control Elise and doesn't approve of Richard) it seems muted and takes a backseat to the romance aspect with Reeve and Seymour making a very photogenic and attractive couple.

This is a very "quiet" movie as there isn't any real bombast to it. It actually kind of feels like a Victorian age drama no doubt in part due to Seymour's accent and Reeve being the upright "good man".

The theme is crystal clear as it stresses that love has a great power to break through barriers of any kind and indeed the ending which I won't give away drives home that point to a tee. Aside from Reeve, Seymour and Plummer the movie doesn't have very many characters of note except for the character of Arthur the hotel bellhop who's been around since 1905. The "present day" version of the character was played wonderfully by Bill Erwin who gives the character a charm and vitality that only great character actors can do with small roles.

In the end, the movie is too slow and dreamlike (to the point that certain scenes are done in such a heavy soft focus as to be completely foggy) that it doesn't seem mainstream enough for a major audience. Nonetheless, I found it strangely compelling and give it 2 stars.
