I remember Earth Girls are Easy as being pretty entertaining. I haven't seen it in YEARS though. I think I might have to watch it sometime. Geena Davis is indeed underrated. I especially loved her in a movie called The Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel L. Jackson.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Beauty and the Beast - A top-tier Disney classic with one of the better developed Disney villains in Gaston and probably one of the better animated ones, as well. I never really pieced together the timeline before now, but the timeline of the curse makes little sense in conjunction with the prologue and portrait.

Hunger Games. I never intended to watch it, as the whole story seemed rather silly to me, but I finally decided to watch it last night and I must say it was better than I expected it to be, but I still didn't really care for a few parts. Overall, 8/10

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Glass Key (1942)
This was on one of the On Demand channels here and it's a movie I've wanted to see for sometime so I naturally watched it
Plot:
During the campaign for reelection, the crooked politician Paul Madvig decides to clean up his past, refusing the support of the gangster Nick Varna and associating to the respectable reformist politician Ralph Henry. When Ralph's son, Taylor Henry, a gambler and the lover of Paul's sister Opal, is murdered, Paul's right arm, Ed Beaumont, finds his body on the street. Nick uses the financial situation of The Observer to force the publisher Clyde Matthews to use the newspaper to raise the suspicion that Paul Madvig might have killed Taylor.
With that out of the way, this is an EXCELLENT film noir based on Dashiel Hammett's work so you know that the material is already excellent to begin with. The movie insofar as billing goes, stars Brian Donlevy as Madvig but the real star is Alan Ladd as his right hand man Beaumont. Veronica Lake is the femme fatale of the piece as Henry's daughter and the woman who captures his heart to the point that he wants to reform from being a crooked corrupt criminal type to someone who'll clean up his act.
The plot can get a bit complex at times so you have to be pretty attentive when watching this but it's a very rewarding experience. I'm avoiding spilling too much as I think this is one of those noirs that should be watched with as fresh a perspective as you can. I WILL however talk about the relationship between Ladd and one of Varna's thugs played by William Bendix because I think it's got a bit of a sexual undercurrent to it. Bendix is a big drunken slob of a man who derives pleasure from beating the hell out of Ladd but there's a whole art to it as a scene in the latter part of the film shows him using "foreplay" by getting them drunk and calling Ladd "sweetheart" etc etc. It's one of those very subversive traits to a character that had to be employed because of the Code in those days. I kind of think using subtlety like that is a lot more preferable to having a character being outright gay in modern movies.
If you do watch this movie though check out one of the scenes earlier in the film where Ladd is getting beaten within an inch of his life as Bendix accidentally cold cocked Ladd for real which strangely enough led to a lifelong friendship between the two men.
This flick has mystery, some great lines and a great cast. I give this a strong 3 stars and it's a film that if you're ever interested in noir should be watched.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Charlie Bartlett
It was a bit different than I expected, but was short and sweet enough to let it run its course. A movie as grounded as this allows an opportunity for it to feel very "realistic," like that this could happen to/for somebody. As it stood, it never really felt all that realistic. Fortunately, it was still pretty good and had okay laugh-out-loud moments, even though it wasn't ever intended to be a comedy first and foremost.
One thing I thought when watching this movie was that it reminded me a bit of Matilda when it came to the narration. Not that the film had a narration, but if this was written into a novel, I could see them writing it as a narrative from the principal's point of view much like Matilda feels as if it's written from Miss Honey's point of view. As much as the movie is about Charlie Bartlett, there aren't often too many times where you are feeling what he's feeling. Kind of an interesting way of going about things, and it allowed me to enjoy RDJ more (and he also happens to have a smoking hot daughter in Kat Dennings).
Okay film, and innocent enough despite its R rating. Definitely something I would watch with my mom (she's not into most movies that I watch, and I think this would be a decent exception).Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness yesterday.
A couple of friends visited with me this week from out of town. They wanted to see either Iron Man 3 or Star Trek, and they decided on Star Trek. I went with them and really enjoyed that film.
JJ toned down the annoying lens flare crap considerably, so I only had to mutter about it a few times LOL. But the story and acting were on point. This was some good Trek.
I like how I'm seeing this universe's characters evolve as well, particularly Quinto's Spock. His two halves and conflict seem much closer to the surface than the ever-cool Nimoy's take. Well done.GO 'HAWKS!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
3 Movies on Netflix time, the first one, when I saw that trailer resulted in Kristen Bell blocking me on twitter. And now that I've seen Hit and Run I can say I was totally accurate with my statement. Brutal movie.
The next one I almost purchased at BB, but passed because it wasnt on blu. Parkey Posey stars in this indie movie, Price Check and it's not worth the bandwidth to stream it on netflix.
The last flick(which is actually the first one of these three I saw) was Undefeated Solid Stuff.SpoilerIt's a real life East Dillon High essentiallyComment

Just watched jack reacher. Good movie better than what I expected.I am glad I got the Buell- I love riding it, I love the oddball looks I get on the road- I love people asking "What IS that thing?" I love flying into a corner WAY too hot, scared spitless and sure I'll never hold it at this speed- and hearing the bike whisper "Sissy!"...Comment

Stripped (2008)
I like horror movies because there's a bunch of things that can make them work. If they hit on even one I can say something good about it. This missed every single one. Badly. The only good thing I can say about this is I didn't fall asleep during it so that only makes it the 2nd worst horror movie I've ever seen.
Blood Diner
A fantastic horror movie. Well more of a horror comedy. All around entertaining.
Side Effects
I didn't know what it was about going in but heard good things. Very much not intresting at first but then it turned out pretty good. Started as a standard drama that didn't have anything going for it,then a slight turn down horror lane and then mystery. The lady that played Jude Law's wife wasn't very good, that or she was just ridiculously outclassed by him.
Fast & Furious 6
Dat plane sequence. Would've been better if they didn't show it in trailers but still that should get an award itself. They've gotten so far from the cars and racing now. There's only one race. Another great scene is Hobbs and Tej at the car dealership, that was gold. Felt shark jumpyish for a bit...then there was the post credits scene and I wanna see the next one now. The trailers did this a disservice by showing the plane and setting incorrect expectations for the Letty stuff so I'm not quite sure what to think of it. It's better than 2fast 2furious at least. andnoididnottorrentitthankyouverymuch!
Another note about it. The military convoy hijack isn't in the movie,it's in the game. Which directly contradicts things that happen in the movie. That scene in the trailer where they make it look like that's the part is the start of the tank scene which is also in the trailer so isn't really a spoiler.Last edited by goh; 05-23-2013, 03:29 PM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Moonrise Kingdom - This is incredible. I feel like Wes Anderson's style is similar to giving a dollhouse life. The opening shots feel like live-action Norman Rockwell Saturday night post paintings and I love how the movie really captures the feel and tone of movies from that time period. The cast is great and very charming (at least the children are - I was neutral over all about the "other" storyline with the adults, but I guess that's part of the purpose is to make the adults look like the children who don't have it figured out). I need to buy this.

Spoiler1. I don't like how nothing comes back to Letty
2. Giselle dying made me cry a little
3. I hate how they completely ruined Tokyo Drift. There was no way to explain Statham being the guy to cause Han's death, as it was just a part of the chase with the DK and Boswell.
4. I am looking forward to seeing Boswell joining the team and Statham as the villain, might have too many big action guys with Vin and Rock already in it, who knows.St. Louis Cardinals | Milwaukee Bucks | Los Angeles Rams

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Just saw Fast & Furious 6
Great movie. Funny scenes. The action was dope. The next one look interesting. although
Spoiler1. Gisele dying was predictable to me because she wasn't in Tokyo Drift and when her and Han were talking about Tokyo I just knew lol still was sad tho :'(
2. Roman was funny in this film the part where him and Han were talking about getting Gisele a big diamond on her ring because if he doesn't than he has to be bigger somewhere else. Han's responds to that made me lol
3. The end credit scene was alil random. Dont really know how Stathem fits into all this, but im excited to see if Boswell will join the team but if he does it has to still be Lucas Black who plays him or it'll feel weird. Him, Dom, and Brian would be a bomb squad!Comment
