The Lion King
I have probably seen this movie 50 times in my life but not since maybe 2002, or whenever Lion King 1 1/2 came out. This is still such a good damn movie. As an adult I can really appreciate the animation way more. Great music. Nice story. Fantastic voice acting. Timeless.
Tarzan
Again, I appreciate the animation so much more now that I have concept over how much work went into it. It doesnt rank in my all time greatest Disney animated films. But it was still a fun movie. Kinda dark too. Disney loves killing the grown folk in their movies.
Wreck It Ralph
I liked the concept. Loved the art. Marked out to the cameos from other game franchises. But Im torn: on one hand I feel like they could have done more with the properties they acquired, on the other hand Im glad they spent most time on their own created characters. Zangief was awesome haha.
Frozen
I finally saw this damn movie after more than a year of hearing the young (and old) women in my family sing Let it Go non stop over that time. I love how Disney went meta and stepped on their own movie tropes left and right. That was good. Good music and performances by the voice actors. Disney rarely messes up on that stuff. Is it me or has Disney really stressed making their female characters more dynamic than ever before? However, stories of Frozen being a top Disney animated film of all time are greatly exaggerated. I may be biased but Frozen couldnt hold a candle to the Disney Renaissance era movies. Still a great movie and I totally get why 15 years from now 20 somethings will revere this movie the way my generation revered Lion King and Aladdin, Little Mermaid etc.Comment

The Lone Survivor - Not too shabby although some of the lines during intense combat scenes could have been better. I don't know what it was about this movie but the realness of the situation got to me. It made me wanna text my buddy who put in 2 Afghanistan tours "thank you".Comment

I'm watching "Jingle All the Way" tomorrow. The part where Myron and Howard go after the Turboman doll is so funny. Howard goes from store and store and never gets one. The lines in this movie is so Arnold.
Ted: "Oh! These cookies. I got to get the recipe from Liz."
Howard: "Put that cookie down, now!"
Myron: "As if I didn't have enough trouble, my son sends me out for some goofy-butt toy. Some fruity robot named, Turtle Man."
Howard: "It's Turbo Man. My son wants one, too."
Myron: "They sit there and use subliminal messages to suck your children's minds out! And I know what I'm talking about because I went to junior college for a semester and I studied psychology so I'm right in there, I know what's going on. Code Name: Emerald (1985)
Despite one of the cooler movie posters:
that makes it look more action oriented than it is this movie is actually a bit of a throwback to the kind of spy flicks from the '40s except told in a more nuanced and complex way. (though the plot is anything but complex but that's the best word I could think of) Ed Harris plays the double agent in this one and the fact that he's one is spelled out pretty much from the beginning. I think the film could've been stronger if it wasn't revealed that he was really working for the Allies as that would ramp up the suspense a bit more. It's a taut and well told procedural of Harris' job to keep the Germans from making a captured soldier who happens to be an "Overlord" (Someone who knows the full details of D-Day) spill the beans. Said soldier is played quite well by Eric Stoltz. There's a scene early on as he's going out with fellow soldiers on a practice run for D-Day and they're kibitzing about baseball. Stoltz proves to be a huge stat nut but it also tries to portray him as someone who knows too much.
Anywho, The Germans "use" Harris to try to get the details of D-Day from Stoltz while he's locked up in a Paris prison. There's also a sub-plot dealing with Harris and his Allied contact who just happens to be a very pretty woman.
To be honest with you, this is not a very exciting film as it goes for the cerebral rather than the action. Nonetheless there's an air of authenticity surrounding the film as the locations look very authentic to the period. The movie was based on a novel and the novelist was also the screenwriter so that lends an air of credibility to the film which in turn probably explains the cat and mouse nature of Harris vis a vis the Germans. I will say there's a development late in the movie that i didn't see coming so it's got that going for it.
Max Von Sydow plays a senior army officer and he's EXCELLENT in this movie. Every scene he's in is particularly enjoyable to watch as he really pulls off the stalwart upright German stereotype.
In the end I give this about 2 1/2 stars out of 4.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

It seems like Ed Harris should have been/should be in more "complete" movies in terms of excellence, but it often falls short.... sometimes the writing or the supporting actors, etc. I don't know.... I go into an Ed Harris movie, yet often times come away disappointed, despite there being some good scenes. The most recent were Sweetwater and Frontera. The thing is is that he's such a likeable character and typically engaging, but something falls short in the screenplay or the like.
Speaking of falling short, and not unexpected, "When The Game Stands Tall" was as you would think from the trailer. For some reason, Christian-based/themed movies just don't get the production value/quality needed to pull it off.Comment
