What movies have you seen recently?
Joe
Many on the internet give Nicolas Cage grief any chance they get, but truth is my man has some gems under his belt. Cage had a solid run in the 90's and dropped some awesome flicks in the 2000's (Lord of War, The Family Man, The Weather Man), so it was nice to see him star in something recent that was very good.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched probably 15 or so movies on my flight to and from Australia lol. Quick recap of the ones I can remember:
Wedding Ringer: it was alright. I can't remember his name, but I like the main guy (not Kevin Hart) a lot. Their dynamic reminded me a bit of Hitch with Kevin James and Will Smith.
Interstellar: I'm not sure how I feel about it. It was pretty captivating but just so weird. So weird.
Social Network: Loved it. Been meaning to see this since it originally came out and I'm so glad I finally did.
Big Hero 6: Really solid animated film
Fast and the furious (the one before this most recent one): just like the others.
Focus: I'm a sucker for Will Smith and con artist movies so this was right in my wheelhouse.

I think my favorite from him was Matchstick Men. Really good movie IMO. And I still love the original National Treasure despite how ridiculous it was lol

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I remember watching this at my friends house on date dinner and a movie kinda deal like almost 10 years ago. That scene in particular is why this movie is still vivid in my memory."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Kingsmen: Definitely the best among this list of my recently watched movies. Not exactly what I expected, and was fairly funny. Ended up buying.
Focus: Blind buy because I like Will Smith movies usually and Margot is hot. Actually kind of disappointed with the movie once they got to the second act. Was kimd of a mess.
Wedding Ringer: Liked alot actually. Not really a Kevin Hart fan, but this was his best movie that I've seen. Him and Gad worked well together.
Get Hard: Heard a lot of peoplesaying this wasnt very good. But I thought it was hilarious, was laughing throughout. Best Ferrell movie in awhile.
Unfinished Business: Meh. It was OK. Franco's character was funny. It was kind of a letdown along the lines of the Vaughn's last few films.Comment

Agreed completely, I remember seeing it years ago in England when I was visiting relatives. I literally fell asleep 20 minutes into the movie. You know a movie is overrated when the mediocre (but fun IMO) Sly Stallone remake is better.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
1408
Don't worry, I've seen this many times before (first saw it in theaters), however ever since getting the Blu-ray that has only had the director's cut, I've been annoyed with watching it. I think nearly every change/addition that was virtually made in the director's cut worsens the film entirely, from a good movie to just an okay movie. Particularly the ending, but other things here and there were meh as well. The theatrical cut is golden, though.
So, I did my research and I found out the German BD disc is the only one that also features the original theatrical cut, so I took the plunge on that one and it finally shipped to me. Thankfully it's also region-free. The menus are in German, obviously. I don't much care for that either way. It also defaults to the German audio, but you can change that to English in a heartbeat.
The opening credits weren't in German, but when the title shows up on screen it says "Zimmer 1408." There are some interspersing moments of something on screen that is written in English, and there will be a German subtitle for it on the bottom. If I can merge two MKV files together, maybe I can get those scenes out of the way where they have those moments, I will have a full Americanized BD version of this film. No indicator of whether the audio and/or video quality would be the same, but I don't think I would notice a change in that either way.
It was so rewarding to see the theatrical cut of this film on Blu-ray though, especially the ending!. Only costed me about 15 bucks to make it all happen, too! The double-dip is unfortunate, but for me it's worth it.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Moving Violations (1985)
So over the next couple months or so i'll be alternating between movies I haven't seen before and revisiting movies I haven't seen in years. This flick represents the latter. It's basically Police Academy set at a driving school even to the point that Neal Israel and Pat Proft were the key movers and shakers of this production. Interestingly enough both guys are still knocking about on the fringes of Hollywood these days.
The film has a couple trivia bits to it as it's the first, to my knowledge movie that co-stars siblings of more famous actors. John Murray is the snarky bastard among the driving school attendees and James Keach plays the traffic cop who hates him with a passion. Murray is pretty much a clone of his brother in terms of mannerisms and style which doesn't do him any favors as he didn't have the charisma to make you like him. Hell, he doesn't even have the charisma of Steve Guttenberg in the same kind of role in Police Academy! Keach fares a lot better though he's hamfisted by a script that makes him completely unlikeable. Keach physically looked like a clone of his more famous brother but unlike Murray he comes off much better.
This was one of the few films that came out in the mid '80s which took the template of Police Academy and did their own thing. You'd think that the script writers of the former movie would do a better job with their own take on it but it doesn't work for a couple reasons:
1) John Murray's character is far too annoying to cheer on. He's always being a doofus and flippant to the point that you as the viewer want to punch his lights out. It doesn't help that the Keach character is also utterly contemptible in his own right. At least with the Guttenberg/Bailey interplay in the Police Academy movies seemed more like the likeable jerk yanking on the chain of an authority figure who has his tie on too tight. Their relationship also softened as those movies went on to the point that it was just part of a schtick for them. In Moving Violations you have the authority figure being completely immoral and abusive of his power turning the screws on someone who actually DESERVES to get the short end of the stick.
2) While there are some funny sequences and characters (I especially love Nedra Volz as the blind old lady. She's a real hoot in this. She was in a lot of stuff as the comedic old lady) but most of the characters are way too over the top and there just isn't enough chemistry between the characters. That being said, it still produced some laughs.
This isn't even a good movie but it's not a bad time waster if you happen to find it somewhere. There are some fun moments in isolation but it just doesn't hold together. I give this a middling 2 stars.
Trivia: Feature film debut of Don Cheadle in a bit role as a drive-thru employee.
My Science Project (1985)
This flick was a box office bomb but it's actually not that bad of a film. The main problem IMO is that there was a bit of a bait and switch in the marketing. The trailer for this movie made it seem like a very action packed fun sci-fi movie whereas the reality was a little different. Most of the movie feels like a coming of age story and then the last third of the movie it turns into the sci-fi fun actioneer it was marketed as.
Basically the movie tells the story of Michael and Ellie who break into a former military junkyard for his science project. Unbeknownst to them it's actually an alien engine/conduit of some kind that if unleashed will unleash a space/time rift where past, present and future all intermingle in one place. As I said the movie for the most part is one long setup to the action sequence but there's also a tonal problem as well. It tries to be somewhat serious but then you have Fisher Stevens playing an Italian greaseball kid who watches too much TV and has bravado up the wazoo but chickens out. There's also Dennis Hopper as the '60s obsessed former hippy science teacher. Hopper basically chews the scenery every time he's on and I just loved his over the top delivery at the end of the movie when he comes back from being sucked into the space/time dimension. The movie also tries to teach a lesson about the important things in life as the Michael character relates far more to cars than he does people.
So you have whole swathes of film time where you're alternating between teen drama and comedy to the point that the overall tone isn't what it should be. Still, it's very watchable and the actors all give good performances. The action sequence in the last 3rd of the film is actually pretty good SFX wise for the time period. Seeing the 3 guys (there's a nerd character who plays a big part in explaining what's going on and is involved in rescuing Ellie) with their machine guns going through the school in order to save the town and Ellie reminded me a bit of Predator with the way it was staged.
It's not a bad film per se but tonal problems and bad marketing doomed it from being a real success.

7 Days In Hell
Easily one of the most ridiculous things I have watched recently. Felt like a 40 minute long SNL skit, but actually funny. Could have done without all the male genitalia though.Comment
