Watched Spy the other day. Melissa McCarthy bothers me, but I was able to tolerate her enough to actually enjoy the humor.

Ehh...she was okay. The school meeting scene tried to be funny, but wasn't.

Jason Statham was the funniest character in Spy.

It was funny to me in the same way Whiplash was; vulgarity. She came up with some pretty off the wall adjectives for describing people and scenarios. I know not everyone likes when it's "F this, F that" but I found it pretty funny.

Not gonna lie, I was in and out of the room so maybe I missed a lot of Statham, but he seemed like a distant co-star to McCarthy.

I didn't realize the evil lady was from Neighbors (but mainly Bridesmaids... though I've only seen bits & pieces) until like 3/4 through the movie. I'm still scarred by the image of her swollen tits in Neighbors... but Seth Rogen's reaction to his milk bath killed me.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Last night I watched The Flight of the Phoenix (1965) and it was an AWESOME movie. One could make the argument that it was the last truly great acting performance of Jimmy Stewart's career. The ensemble cast was excellent and I loved how everyone had some kind of subplot going on within the story that interwove with the main antagonistic relationship between Stewart and Hardy Kruger. It's unfortunate that the main stunt pilot for the film died in the midst of filming though
              frown emoticon

I then watched the 2004 remake immediately after and the best way I can compare these two films is this: The original is like a great beer, rich and filling with a fullness one can appreciate. The remake is like Miller Lite, taking out all the richness while maintaining the general taste and feel of pure beer but there's something missing. The soul of the drink is completely gone.

The remake had the bare bones structure of the original film and it updated things to a modern time but they completely changed the nature of Towns and Dorfman's (in the remake his name is Elliott) antagonism. There is a hint of subplots among the characters but it's shoved too far below the surface to really matter. Hell, you expect a modern movie to have the characters look more grungy, tired and beaten up but if you ask me, the original beats the pants off the remake in that regard as well.

I was also disappointed to see the relationship between Towns and his co pilot/navigator (Richard Attenborough in the original, Tyrese Gibson in the remake) more or less be thrown to the side in the remake. Oh, they are friends/co-workers to be sure but in the original film Attenborough was a friend, confidant and someone Stewart could vent about Kruger.

The Frank Towns character while hard in nature on the outside but really a good guy when you get down to it in the original is rendered into a pretty unlikable character in the remake. It definitely makes for the possibility of violence erupting but I don't like the change in personality either.

In the end I think you should watch the original if you've never seen it and stay far away from the remake.

Don't see that. If there's ever such a thing like "clever vulgarity", it was highlighted in Whiplash. Actually, I didn't see the vulgarity in Whiplash as humorous at all. It was just another one of his manipulation tools. McCarthy, who I actually like somewhat, is just showcasing that brand of vulgarity like Schumer or Lampelli use. More of a woman-cursing-like-a-sailor method that's supposed to gain a laugh just because vulgarity is being used. Totally different (and does nothing for me). McCarthy in Saint Vincent was a good role for her. I like here when she's being more sarcastic with less base vulgarity.

                        The Visit.

It was free, but not a very good movie unless you watch it with people who you can talk about it with as it goes on.

For someone like me who never knew the full story, I think it did a decent enough job and it made a pretty good movie. I would watch it again some day down the road.

Weird ****ing movie.. I want to say Ana de Armas is pretty hot, but her role in the movie was just too weird. I wouldn't watch it again. I did look at IMDB and the same chick has done a some late night cinemax type **** in another movie.

We saw both of these also.

The Visit wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Had it's moments.

                              Insidious: Chapter 3

Story-wise, it only had one trick up its sleeve, and although it was pretty nuanced I don't know if it was enough to warrant a third chapter, so to speak. As far as scares, it had nothing to offer in any sense. The first two were plenty creepy, and found something else to offer. Leigh Whannell directed this time (I do believe this was his directorial debut), and he doesn't have quite the same eye as James Wan does, but he didn't do bad. I just thought this movie didn't really bring anything else to the table for this franchise, and scares weren't great either.

                              Mad Max: Fury Road

I don't really know what it was that I just watched, but I enjoyed it I think. The effects were just tremendous overall, and I was in love with the sound design! While I was very disappointed with the neutered mix of the recent Avengers BD release, this one was just spot-on all the way. If I liked the film enough, I would have bought it in a heartbeat and showed others as a demo disc all the way, both with video and audio. That technical feat alone made it worth the rental. Otherwise, it was just kind of weird I guess. I don't often go for these kinds of movies, and I was hoping it would offer something else to bring me in instead of laughing at it. But I think it's aware of what it was. I mean there was a guy playing electric guitar in front of a vehicle! Enough said.

I liked it a lot, but the two children were worse than they usually are for a similar role in any movie. Imagine a R rated versions.. It could have been way bloodier, but the fight scenes and animation was still fun to watch. I imagine in IMAX or even the theater it would have been a better experience. I watched on a 32" TV at work. It was a little predictable, but about what I expected and a decent movie.

                                Savages.

I've watched it before and it's still a really fun and entertaining movie. The story isn't anything original or unique, but I like movies with this sort of vibe. I'll see it again someday I'm sure.
