Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Barton Fink.
This one escaped me through the years then fell by the wayside. Quite curious. Of course, Turturro and Goodman are captivating as always. But, I really liked Shaloub's character as small of a part as it was. I didn't really get what was going on until about 3/4's through, then you have to think back. Pretty cool.....but not for everyone, I would imagine.
Also, for sentimental reasons, watched The Sunshine Boys the other night. This is not a laugh out loud movie. It's more of an appreciation of these iconic comedic actors. Walter Matthau really stole the show overall. It was like he was rehearsing for Grumpy Old Men 18 years before it came out.Comment

Saw No Escape the other day starring Owen Wilson & Pierce Brosnan. Thought it was pretty good. Very intense throughout.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
SpoilerWhen Jack (Owen Wilson) finds an opportunity to move to Southeast Asia to head his water manufacturing company's new plant there, he immediately jumps at the opportunity and moves his family there. When they get there; they seem to be having problems, the electronics don't work and rarely any cars are seen in the streets. When he goes to the market the next morning, he finds himself caught in the middle of a violent rebellion headed by armed rebels executing foreigners. Jack must get back to the hotel and with the help of a mysterious British "tourist" (Pierce Brosnan), must get his family to the American Embassy in the midst of the chaos. But is there any escape?Comment

I didn't know he was in it until we got there. None of the previews I saw showed him in it. He had a great role in this film.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Unfriended
Not the kind of movie you want to play on your plasma screen. The entire film is played on one character's laptop, so the top Mac frame never goes away. Don't want that burn-in to take place!
This movie knew what its style was, and didn't deviate from it once. Characters spoke naturally, typed naturally, all of the Skype and Facebook jingles were there, the mystery remained in place, and the right questions were left unanswered.
This is something that I saw a commercial for and thought this could have easily gone a poor route, but I thought the intensity of every "scene" (the entire movie is really just one long scene) was ramped up just right. Not really a scary flick and not too many jump scares in general, and I thought that was just fine.
It was also a movie I could talk with my friend about as it was going on, and its entertainment value was partially by looking at every character's webcams or looking for Easter Eggs around the desktop. Short and sweet, glad I saw it. Won't buy it, won't change my overall outlook on horror films in any way, but I haven't seen this kind of take before and I thought it was very cool. No sequel needed. I wish the ending cut out about ten seconds before it really did, but it didn't change my viewing of the ending at all.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I saw Black Mass last night. I really enjoyed it. Johnny Depp was absolutely fantastic in it. Probably the best performance I have ever seen from him. Depp himself even stated it was his favorite out of all the other films he has ever done.
Definitely makes me more interested to read more about Whitey Bulger.

The Brothers Bloom.
Always like Ruffalo in a movie.... just has a certain appeal. And when Adrian Brody is on, he's on... and in this movie he's on. Overall, it's the right blend of intrigue, light comedy, and offbeat, with a tremendous presentation and story. Check it if you never have. Good couples movie.Comment

Everest
Enjoyed the film but hard to see what the climbers went through. Imax was pretty good for the scale of the mountain. Basically this movie is to remind people that you're stupid to think about climbing it.
The Intern
Stars Robert Deniro and Anne Hathaway where Deniro signs up as a senior intern program and is placed under the founder and ceo of a booming female clothing company.
This is one the gf picked and was expecting something not good. I was pleasantly surprised, I really liked it. Great chemistry between the leads and supporting cast. Very charming and Deniro played an awesome character who was an inspiration to be a good person and to show his worth as a senior citizen and teach the young generation how to be a great worker and a gentleman. Also Hathaway showed an example of being a good entrepreneur and the struggle she had balancing that and her family life. Definitely not a bad date movie.
The Maze Runner 2: Scorch trials
I liked the first one up until the end. This one takes off right at the end of the first. It was ok, some good action but some weird part in the middle and by the end I started agreeing with the antagonist. Not a good sign.
Ended up me not really wanting to finish the trilogy.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Kind of mixed reviews on The Intern (55% RT). One reviewer compared it favorably to Baby Boom and Father of the Bride as being "sweet, uncomplicated, and overly earnest."
I liked those movies and like The Intern they both had some pretty good talent like Steve Martin and Diane Keaton (In both).Comment
