Ant-Man (for the 2nd time). Better the second time around. Still didn't like the villain all that much, but the set up for what's coming was great. The humor was real good. Stan Lee kicks it when his cameo shows up. Every cameo has been great. I also love that Tales To Astonish reference.

      Whiplash

Very cool movie. I was so engaged, I had accidentally left food in the microwave for nearly two hours. Great thing to play on a quality home theater sound system, mostly for the percussion and bass than any horns, but it was all fantastic.

People can say what they want about J.K. Simmons, but personally while I thought he did great I don't think he was the only one who could have exclusively played this role. I think J.K. could have played that role in his sleep. Not saying it wasn't demanding, but I don't think that is an Oscar winner just because that character happened to be placed in a good film rather than a mediocre film. See, I can't see anyone else playing J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man series. That is something where I end up saying that he was top-notch. He is top-notch here too, but...

Miles Teller was the true standout. I don't know what his drumming background was before this or how he actually is in general, but he plays "that character" pretty well. I've only seen him in this and Project X, and I really can only see this kid in those roles right now.

I couldn't tell who really to hate in this film, who to like, what to want in the end... but I did like the end, and did like that they left one aspect of this film ambiguous when it came to overall story development. I thought it was all played pretty well, and I was always guessing what would come next and usually was wrong.

well written, well acted, well shot. Haven't yet seen Birdman, but I would have been satisfied and proud for this to win Best Picture last year.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I've seen all the Oscar movies and Birdman was deserving but Whiplash was my favorite movie by far.

JK won the Oscar because he was better than everyone in that category. He also elevated Teller more than any supporting actor did to the lead by a far margin.

Then at the end you see his eyes and then you read it.... Wow I found him without saying a word. That's fantastic acting man only a few can pull off. Maybe a Michael Fassbender or Daniel Lewis but the list is short.

You're right, actually. He really did elevate Teller. I didn't mean to sound like I was underselling J.K. at all, I just thought that maybe Teller wasn't getting his fair share of the cake because he's a lesser known actor, so I wanted to oversell him more than anything else.

But Teller isn't a strong screen presence like J.K. I think this is why he was a terrible choice for Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards, though that entire movie was horribly cast from the get go.

I forgot he was in that (though I am going to avoid that abomination of a film), but you're right. He needed the support of a strong actor in Whiplash to make whatever motivation he had seem proper and just.

I'm just saying that I could have seen other actors play that role as well. I know that for most people it's hard to see anyone else outside of the role and be dismissive if other names were thrown into the mix, but it's not impossible to think that somebody like Harry Lennix, Paul Giamatti, PSH (who was still alive when this was filmed), David Strathairn, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Tom Cruise (yes, I did just say that), Joel Edgerton, David Morse... some of those actors are a bit younger, but I'm closing my eyes and envisioning a strong demeanor in that role even still with other actors in place. Drumming skills aside, right now I'm scanning for those who could play as Andrew, and it's hard to come up with something convincing at the moment. I guess I can't be complaining too much about Teller being "outshined" since he was nominated, but I sure didn't hear his name a lot going into this one.

The good news is that I really like J.K., and I think he was the biggest draw for me to even watch the film in the first place (minus the critical acclaim). Maybe I'm retracting what I said about him more and more previously, but I don't know if the role is as demanding as it was just a fine performance by a fine actor.

Rewatched The Godfather since my son had never seen it. It just flows so well and is remarkably cast. One of the few movies were there is not a wasted scene.

We'll dive into G2 when we have the time. I told him not to bother with G3.

Inside Out (3D). One of Pixar's best IMO. The plot, characters and pacing was on point. The video and audio we what you expect from a Pixar movie. Glad I made the blind buy on this one.

                    Spectre

I don't get it. People were likening this back to the Bond camp of old, and I just didn't feel that here. Sure, Daniel Craig felt more like a Bond of old than he did in any of his other films, but that's about where it stopped (besides some aerial assaults). In fact, I would have preferred that over what we got. I don't think the issue with Spectre is that it was "boring." I know a lot of boring films that I am thoroughly engaged in. This just wasn't engaging, though. It wasn't action-packed, it wasn't techy, it wasn't charming, it wasn't clever, it wasn't twisty, and the direction turned incredibly bland.

The opening scene was perfectly fine, and I even dug Sam Smith's song... and there were a few good scenes here and there that would be sprinkled in (train scene was by far the best action set piece)... but unless Q was involved in a scene, everything would just feel heartless. I know I was hating on Quantum of Solace before, but I was hating on its rushed pace more than anything else. Speaking of QoS earlier, this film completely crapped on it by ignoring it 1000%. Vesper, Le Chiffre, M, and Silva are all referenced more than once, but never are Camille or Greene brought up under the same breath when they very well could have been.

This film just wasn't well written. By the end of it, it felt like a poor man's Iron Man 3. I honestly can't even say that I know what the plot was, come to think of it. So Bond went places, drove some cars, fought some people, seduced some women, and smirked a few times I think. Oh, and there was a familiar score when the credits rolled as well. At least even when Skyfall gets bad, it has a plus of being pretty. Roger Deakins did much better for Bond than Hoyte van Hoytema did, and I like what he did with The Fighter and Interstellar. This one may have not done it for me, though. As with most films, I will have to give this a re-watch someday to either confirm my findings or see if I find something different next time around, but as it stands this will not fit into my Blu-ray catalog when it comes out later.

                        Pixels

I actually really liked it if not a bit short? Hollow, maybe? Sandler kind of seemed like a weird main character, like a role some younger kid could've played but I guess since it was based around 70s/80s arcade games it had to be someone a bit older. Not to mention his company produced the film. Cool to see the games come to life and the one supporting actor was really funny. Heard this get beat up a bit so my expectations were lowered a bit.

                        Inside Out

I've never felt this way before, but this one seemed a bit too heavy for a Pixar film. I know they all have their tender moments. Who hasn't had their heartstrings pulled in Little Nemo or Toy Story? I think being emotion based was too real as I watched with two people who struggle with anxiety and depression. It made it kind of awkward. Weird experience. Ended up being a pretty good message, though. I'd say give it a watch but know what you're getting in to -- a pretty serious topic that's still serious even when dressed up bright colors.

                        Avengers Age of Ultron

I think I'm getting tired of these movies. Weirdly because the last one like this I saw was Winter Soldier which I liked a lot. Not even saying this as a huge movie critic. Ultron was well done though, I must say.

                        The Gift

So creepy. The ending made me feel very angry. A well done psychological thriller. I really like Jason Bateman too. Good different role but it's still very much him.

Next on the docket is Furious 7 and Mad Maxx.

American Ultra. This was really offbeat from the casting to the story. Overall, it was entertaining. I think a sequel would actually ruin it, though not saying I've heard that 's the plan. If you're a Jesse Eisenberg fan, you'll love it. Walton Goggins (from The Shield) really carved a niche out for himself on both small and large screens with his hick character.

I gotta say I didn't enjoy it,this movie HAS to be played high volume on a great sound system. It blew me away on imax and now that I'm back home, I'm blasting it in my sound bar tomorrow.
