    Nightcrawler

Finally got around to seeing this with the wife last night. Overall, we were both pleased with the film, and Jake Gyllenhaal delivered a really good performance. Definitely would recommend this.

I really really liked this movie and was surprised it wasn't "bigger" as far as reaction and fanfare. IMO this is Jake's finest performance.

The scene when he is at dinner and you really see the sociopath unveiled, chilling. Chilling stuff. This movie is like a monster movie but without the traditional "monster."

I read a lot about film since after I watched it for the second time and I guess the movie is a big metaphor for modern capitalism as far "the individual becomes a corporation" or something like that. Honestly I'm not smart enough to summarize all the things I read about it but it was really interesting stuff, to me anyway, as far as what some people felt the film was trying to say.

Lol for some reason this reminded me of when Superman flew backwards around the Earth to travel back in time

When I was a little kid I thought that was actually possible after seeing that movie

Jungle Book - Just incredible animations. Story variation was good as well. They found the perfect Mowgli.

Don't recall ever reading a review about this on OS but appreciate it. Was on the fence about watching it. Might check it out today now.

Jungle Book is great, probably the best CGI ever in a movie and the voices were perfect.

Got a chance to check out Café Society. Really solid Allen flick. If you like any of Woody's previous stuff, you'll feel right at home. But there isn't a lot to convince non-fans in it.

I was more surprised that I actually liked Kristen Stewart in it. She's not too insufferable in the hands of a good director.

Overrated film in my honest opinion. I'm a Leo Di Caprio fan and The Revenant was one of my least favorite film from him.

                          Totally disagree!
I am not a huge Leo fan and I loved it! lol
Matter of fact it my gf hadn't made me watch it I would have never watched it.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Late last night I watched a FANTASTIC blaxsploitation movie that actually rose above that genre a bit and had some merit on its own. Interestingly it was released around the end of that cycle of films. I guess some of the credit has to go to the producing team of Zanuck and Brown who produced some very profitable films.

Anywho, the film I watched was 1974's Willie Dynamite (That's Willie in my new avatar BTW) and boy howdy was it ever good!

First of all, the title character is played by none other than Roscoe "Gordon from Sesame Street" Orman. It was a revelation seeing the guy I grew up watching on TV being a kindly and wise man getting down with his bad self as an overly ambitious pimp who will do anything to be #1 in NYC.

The movie does a fantastic job of taking you on the journey of Willie Dynamite's fall and redemption. The beginning of the film completely glorifies the pimp life to the point that an impressionable person back then would think it's apex of coolness. Willie seems like he's got everything made but he's created enemies within the pimp community and he's got the cops following him. Here's where they really play around with the conventions a bit as the two cops are an older white guy whose on the verge of retirement and wants to take shortcuts while his partner is a young righteous black MUSLIM cop. There's a scene where he tries to impress upon Willie that the women he uses up and throws away are not only his sister (Willie insulted him saying the woman he was questioned about must be his sister) but Willie's as well.

Willie's hold on his women is also slipping away as his personal woman who is one of his girls working for him got locked up and ends up getting involved with a crusading social worker who ends up hating Willie's guts to the point that she and her DA boyfriend are on a mission to redeem Pashen (Willie's girl) and take down Willie once and for all.

All being told the rest is pretty predictable with Willie's hubris and ambition taking him down but unlike some films we actually see redemption for Willie at the end to the point that in my mind I think "Oh man, I could see him turning a corner over to Sesame Street and being Gordon!".

This is a FANTASTIC film though and one that you should see if you're interested in that genre. Martha Reeves sings an awesome theme song here:

                            <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MFeeih3gkqA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and here's a great scene early on showing Willie making himself a bit of an enemy with his fellow pimps but at the same time you get a sense of his ambition:
