The new Robin Hood. Loved it.

It's reached the point where I'll watch anything with Taron Egerton.

I watched "Alita" last night and was very entertained. I love that character and she's spellbinding to watch. Fantastic action pieces and visuals. Like Pinocochio + John Wick...loved it.

Feel the same way about Alita. Hopefully we get a part 2.

Pretty much this. This movie was clearly written with the intent of having maybe multiple sequels, probably a trilogy. It feels too incomplete to just be one film, and it would be a shame if Cameron and crew weren't able to continue forward because of the lack of a box-office draw from the first one.

I guarantee you a sequel would fare better business-wise, though. The first one maybe broke even at the box-office, and it definitely picked up steam upon its home video and digital streaming releases. Cameron already has so much invested in his Avatar films that I don't know if he can pitch in any of his own money into it, and Disney going with the Fox acquisition and its streaming service launch maybe are thinking differently about what time they should consider doing this.

Basically, if it happens, it might be a while. Give it three more years before we have to actually be impatient regarding the likes of a sequel. I look forward to seeing any sequel, though.

By the way, Keean Johnson reminds me of a young Scott Stapp.

The Hustle starring Fat Amy and Catwoman. Pretty much a direct rip-off of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Very weak and yet seemingly another move by Hollywood of placing women into roles formerly done by men. It's not misogyny, it's an observation. There's tons of roles I've loved women in that I do not want to see reprised by men. Don't waste your time.

                    Say what, now?

Admittedly, I was kind of falling asleep during the middle parts of the film (not its fault, I was tired), so I think I still owe it another chance for the sole purpose of visuals I may have missed (specifically the Rio scene) and for completion's sake. However, I had too big of problems with this film that I can't overlook. I don't often give films ratings, but for me this would probably be a 3.5/10.

My impressions are in this set:

Yesterday I just rented Pet Sematary, and I'll subscribe to liking it. Scary? No, and I'm waiting to be freaked by a horror film again because it has been a while (at least films like from The Conjuring universe have appreciable horror tactics, I'll give them that). However, it certainly was a little risk-taking, and I always enjoy that as I think it paid off delightfully here. I haven't seen the original (I think I saw up until the scene where the judge from My Cousin Vinny appears, which is still right in the beginning), so maybe they do more of the same there. Maybe because I don't have anything to compare to, it makes tolerating the reboot more.

Although I was a fan of the sound design, I wasn't a fan of the soundscape. The fact that you can't hear things until they appear on screen is definitely a Hollywood staple jump-scare tactic, but it's way, way overused here. Visuals were hit-and-miss (mostly hit), going from great practical gory aspects to iffy green-screen backdrops and fog machine overkill. They reminded me on their own that this is a movie, even when I didn't want to think about it watching it. They also use horror movie magic in letting the horror elements happen simply because the camera pans/cuts away for a moment for that thing to happen. Although sometimes you have to do this, it made any shock moments predictable as to when they would occur. I did like the nightmare sequences quite a bit, though.

There was a recurring subplot that I had trouble connecting with everything else the most of the movie, and while it probably served the scariest bits of the film itself, they kind of were able to at the end, I think the run time could have served better tidying up everything else to greater effect. I was able to suspend enough disbelief to hypothetically ask myself what I would do if I was in their shoes regarding their actions, and I don't think I could whimper at not doing it as well. Combine some of the themes with what was overall good acting from every age range, and I enjoyed the heck out of what I saw. I'll go back to the original at some point.

I also saw Collateral for the first time last week. This was a stupendous flick. The writing was incredibly strong, not just within the dialogue but also on a scene-to-scene basis (I'll explain later). The casting of Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx worked so well for the roles that were written.

There was a slight third act twist that I honestly don't know how I didn't see coming, and although slightly forced I'll say for the movie's sake it was a good revelation. I was starting to connect a lot of the dots. There was something else that happened that was so shocking that I didn't believe they actually went that route when I first saw it, then about five minutes later it literally hit me that they did. People could see it as a weakness, but for me it was rather brazen, and I wish films did it more often simply to subvert expectations.

Michael Mann was channeling his inner David Ayer (who likely channels his inner Michael Mann often) keeping the intimacy of two people in a car for a single night a compelling bit of action in and of itself. Angles don't repeat and create effect of the moment, you can tell what Foxx is thinking without saying it and you can tell that Cruise is in a state of unpredictability with purpose, and it seems he let them go off-script enough so they could be themselves in their strongest of ways. All this being said, while I somewhat can feel justification of going the digital camera route for a bit of maintaining that "intimate" feel, maybe getting a voyeuristic take of the L.A. vibe this put on, plus pretty much shooting in the dark all film, it makes me wonder how he liked the effect enough that he decided to use it again in Public Enemies several years later where the look was absolutely dreadful and was not at all fitting for that film. Do it once, but after that find another way, bud.

Now, for the strong scene-to-scene writing I was referring to. I don't want to get really into spoiler territory so I'll stay generic enough, but if you haven't seen it I think you can take this more as an introspective analysis that should be absorbed as you're actually watching the movie. It seems that nothing done in this film was random. I don't mean in the film's universe, I mean when it comes to setting up and executing overall themes. One of them seemed to be how much the characters really learned from each other over the several encounters. Yes, Foxx is the good guy and Cruise is the bad guy, but a lot of movies that have the good guy learning from the bad guy (even at a subconscious level) and acquiring their best traits that fill their own voids tend to have you leave saying that there is a respectable amount of craft that went behind the project.

It's not like the learning moments were one-offs at the end of the movie, either. You saw progressive, radical shifts in how they went about doing things and how you felt about them (there was definitely a single moment for Foxx that made you confirm this shift in him, but it did build over time for sure). I liked Foxx's delusions of grandeur early on because it really grounded his reality to me, and the fact that he kind of saw his reality for himself more and more throughout the film hearkened back to this idea greatly. Nothing done here wasn't on purpose, and I think a lot of movies think about building a character out of thin air from already writing the story whereas I think this story was built upon the characters that were first established and in place. If someone asked you why this movie's title is what it is, you could come up with a reason on the surface, but there are definitely bigger elements at play that can't be spoken of until watched.

The story itself isn't deep, but the fact that you can make something basic so very compelling and write deep character arcs is a marvel in a way, and I'm surprised it took me so long to see this movie. Though, if you think about it, it came out when I was 16 years old and gawking at guilty pleasures like The Day After Tomorrow. Now, this is something I wish that I had seen with my father when he was still alive. I'd definitely buy this just so I could have that one moment to sit him down and watch it with me, because we would talk about it together for a long time thereafter. There are a lot of lessons here that can be learned from the directing, acting, and most notably the screenwriting. This is highly recommended.

I’m not sure why the reviews are poor. I found Chapter Two to be exceptional. It was better than Chapter1!
                          I recommend this movie!

My expectations were low going in but I enjoyed this. It's not without flaws but I enjoyed the story and was bit emotional on the final scene. Michael and James never disappoint me in these roles...or anything else I've seen them do.

I liked this one a lot, and I think it's more re-watchable than Bohemian Rhapsody. I love Elton and Queen, and am a bigger Queen fan than of EJ, but this was done extremely well as a musical. Taron is a very gifted actor, sadly I doubt he gets an Oscar (Raimi really deserved his) but he was extremely good here and his singing is just fine for the film, and works better in context than using the originals and lip synching those (due to WAY the songs are presented). Elton was a producer for this and 100% behind Taron's singing and performance. Check it out if you like Elton!

I will be seeing It Chapter 2 this upcoming weekend. Huge fan of Chapter 1, read the book and also loved the original tv mini series back in 1990.

I think this book has been done great justice by both interpretations of the films. A rare thing for Stephen King novels.

I also recommend the 1995 mini series epic The Stand. Extremely well done considering how massive the book was.
