You should really check out Parasite. It has quite a lot of layers to it.
I saw all Best Picture nominees (and all but Little Women before the list even came out), and I as well thought 1917 was going to win (though I personally wanted Jojo Rabbit to win). I also think 1917 deserved Best Director. HOWEVER, once Parasite won Best Director and already had a screenplay win, you knew if anything else won Best Picture that would just be weird.
I will be watching 1917 again soon, but I’m sitting here now thinking how much merit I would give it for its story and everything else had it not done the one-shot effect. I think that’s a huge selling point to it and its immersion and I think this was the right story for it, but remove it and do you have something that stacks up against the rest? Not sure. Basically, I don’t think it deserved a Best Screenplay nomination. I don’t know where that came from.
On a side note, Greta Gerwig should’ve gotten a Best Director nomination for Little Women. I could have easily crossed Todd Phillips off that list in her place. Don’t know how she got one for Lady Bird and not this, even on a comparative scale to the films around them in their respective years.
