Spoiler
It is without a doubt the saddest movie I've ever seen. And that's before you pay attention to the box art on the cover

It may hold that title for me as well, the only thing I can think of is Dear Zachary, but it’s hard to separate the sadness from the rage felt when watching that.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
We watch a lot of documentaries/docuseries'. Dear Zachary was the worst but There's Something Wrong With Aunt Diane was terrible, as well. Both of those have really stuck with me over the years. I can't recommend either though because personally I wish I would have never watched them myself. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

It’s on Hulu in the US, not sure how the region stuff works. Side note just searching for it and seeing the box art the feels hit me again. I feel it is to people with younger siblings what The Road is to people with kids.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Mulan: Rise of a Warrior
No way I'm paying those prices for the new live action Mulan movie, and so I decided to re-watch the live action version out of China from 2009.
This movie clocks in at just under 2 hours, but at times it feels longer than that. It's heavy on drama and exposition. That isn't a bad thing though.
The basic story is the same, but this isn't your Disney's Mulan. There is no magic at all. Just a girl who joins the army to fight the Mongols in her father's stead. Fortunately for her, her father taught her king fu throughout her life and so she is actually a really good fighter.
Even though there is a heavy focus on martial arts, I wouldn't exactly call it a Wuxia film either. There are no wires letting combatants fly through the air or balance on a thin tree branch. Everything has a sense of realism.

Mulan (2020)
This one is a bit of a lightning rod.
1.) I'm only going to talk about the movie, not addressing any of the behind the scenes controversy regarding this movie and China.
2.) The price is obviously absurd at $30 on top of a Disney+ subscription. I was fortunate enought o have a family member with kids who wanted to see it. I can not recommend paying this much for any movie to watch at home though.
The movie itself. The short version is that I really liked it. It had a good bit of action, and I really liked the portrayal of Mulan.
There are some legitimate criticisms of the movie, but when I look at the low scores on IMDB and RT I see a common theme around 3 things:
1 - Controversy with China
2 - It's overly Woke
3 - It's different from the 1998 classic
I'm not touching #1. As for #2, the Mulan is inherently a "woke" story in that it's a girl who has to pretend to be a boy to fight in the army. That being said, certain parts of it definitely felt forced and unnecessary. Fortunately, it does not spend the entire film rehashing some of the more nonsensical inserts, but it's a valid criticism.
The last of those themes is just silly though. Anyone who watched a trailer would know that this isn't a 100% remake of the 90's animated version, and that's not a bad thing. The legend of Mulan goes back over 1000 years, and the 90's animation is hardly the only version of the story. In some ways this version more closely mimics the 2009 live adaptation Mulan: Rise of a Warrior which imo is the best iteration of the story to date.
In a strict 1998 vs 2020 comparison though, I would summarize it like this. The supporting cast in the animated classic is better. The character growth of the titular character is much better in this 2020 adaptation.
Minor spoiler
SpoilerThe worst part of the movie is actually one of the villains. I'll avoid any major spoilers, but when it comes to the villains it felt like they were trying to tell multiple stories without giving any of them the proper focusLast edited by KSUowls; 09-09-2020, 05:50 PM.Comment

^^^
Thanks for saving us $30!
Been on a bit of a Denzel tear lately and decided to watch "He Got Game" again after seeing it soon after it came out. Denzel of course nailed it. Ray Allen was actually pretty impressive all things considered.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
It's funny the film's story is being reviewed as "overtly woke", but the actual production is being criticized for the exact opposite.
Good ol, Disney.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
seems like most of my favorite Denzel movies will never get a sequel: Fallen, Training Day, Cry Freedom, Malcolm X, Book of Eli. outside of Equalizer, you don't see Denzel repeating himself, he's always moving on to other roles. Also, Hollywood should do a Passenger 57 sequel, this time w/Denzel as CutterOSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23
