I want to compare Ipad to the window 7 tablets that are coming out later this year.

The response of that touch screen looks awful.

That's the difference that most vendors don't seem to get. Same goes for the consumer that feels his Samsung touchscreen can compare.

It's about the UI and experience, not the most simplest basic form where touch=input.

If that's the case, there have been touchscreen monitors for years... and they still suck.

Until Google and Microsoft has a manufacturing operation. Seamlessness through out the UI will never exist. This THE biggest reasons why I miss the iPhone. Nothing compares to Apple in this regard.

In all fairness I going to hands on and compare before I make a judgement. I like windows 7 as an OS and I am looking forward towards trying the HP tablet.

Those promos are funny because the smoothness of transitions and such always look great, then when you get the actual thing it is never that smooth.

These UI's always look great in concept but their execution hardly ever meets their promises.

Heck, HP had a promo video showing someone thumbing through the full version of iTunes' coverflow on that slate like you can do on the iPhone. That's a crock. iTunes does not support input like that in coverflow. It accepts singular inputs and jumps based on that input.

Just beware of all these promo/hype videos. Your best bet is to, like you said, WAIT, and try it out first.

Just had and iPad in my hands and it is pretty sweet. I will agree with the above posters in that the techies are talking about it, but the real beneficiaries will be the average person who just surfs the internet and checks email and organizes their pictures. This thing would be great for my fiance. Plus it doesn't come preloaded with a bunch of crap I'll never use like all laptops do. I can get the apps for the things I'm interested in and that's all that's on there. I'm even more impressed by it after I've seen it. Doesn't mean I need it, but I may have a built in excuse to get it "for the lady friend".

To echo Pared's sentiments: until other companies can figure out how to compete with Apple's touchscreen technology, they will never catch up.

Using an iphone, then trying to use another touchscreen phone is almost embarassing in how inferior the other screen technologies are.

Wow, Nokia suck but I daughter have an android phone/samsung phone and the phone is very responsive. I have android running on my winmo HTC touch pro and it is responsive.

I just like windows 7 because I can do so much with the os without jail breaking the computer.

But as for that slate... if it gets 5 hours battery life, I'd expect real world use to be much less. You have the USB ports drawing power, flash which murders battery.

A lot of its pros are possibly going to be negatives at times. Still, the competition is nice and I'm sure they'll sell a few units.

The only phone I've seen have a touchscreen be even close to Apple's is the Nexus One. Very nice phone. I don't see it being a phone I'd want 2 years from now though.

I have windows 7 on my netbook and it runs smooth. I would rather have those features with a possibility of the trade off with battery life. I believe the nexus one is using the snapdragon processor and there are several phones this year that will use this processor.

Why wouldn't want a nexus/android phone?

I sort of like how that slab turns into a "lap top". Would be kinda cool to have that for at-home use, then to just pop the thing out of there when going on the road.

Other than that though, no thanks. That touch screen just looked awful to me.

Great points...These alternatives need to come up with a great UI that overlays Windows 7, it's not really a native touch OS

but the overlays shouldn't be a big issues. I have great overlays on my winmo htc phones. I think windows 7 will be just fine for touch but there will be some trade offs. I will wait for the 2nd generation of hardware, so they can work out the 1st gen kinks.

Anything none Apple seems to have a disturbingly amount of lag. If you have not used an Apple device for a decent amount of time you do not notice, but once you use one(especially touch interface) it makes it hard to use anything else without noticing it.

On another note, I think that Apple should come out with some kind of base/dock for the Ipad. Maybe something with plenty of storage, disk drive, ports, etc. Hp and Lenova have a good idea with their devices, but these other companies really need to build their OS from the ground up.

I don't doubt something like that will come someday. This will also work well to "prop" it up in a way. One of the reasons I would never use this thing is it has to be flat against whatever surface you put it against (unless you hold it up all day and give yourself carpal tunnel). That, plus my dislike for touch pads (typing, etc.) and disregard for protecting it from damage despite my will to... but that's besides the point.
