I believe it is a combination. (have not read the books, but love fantasy)

Considering there are dragon eggs, and these "white walkers".

I've only read the first book, but it's definitely a combination. But, whatever mysticism exists seems to be very very low key. Reading an interview from Martin, he said he wanted his stories to be closer to realistic and not have all of the fantasy elements usually found in these sort of stories.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Well its obvious alot of backstabbing going to happen in the first couple of episodes. first being that odd brother and sister combo and those barbarian type guys. He's going to get them to go to war with WinterFell I don't know bout that, i think he ends up dead pretty fast. then the king and his so called queen bumping uglies with that knight. then you got the whole white walkers and dragons thing going on a very different show. I chose this over camelot looking like a good choice.

I hope that little boy was jacked up . something tells me he ended up fine.
"Winter is coming" is a sort of warning because in the world they live in the seasons last years as opposed to months. So, the book starts in the summer and there's a lot of talk about how because the summer has lasted so long (over 10 years, if I remember right), they're expecting the winter to last about the same. There are some characters that are kids that have only ever seen the summer, so don't know what winter is like.

Throw in the fact that the Starks live in the North, where it's already cold, "Winter is coming" is sort of an omen of long, hard times to come that are going to last a long time.

Thanks for clearing that up. Puts it in a better perspective.

That's a good explanation, but there is more to it than that. Winter doesn't just bring hardship; it brings something else. I'm sure it'll be revealed soon enough. I'm going to assume if people are asking about it, the truth behind the fear of Winter wasn't mentioned in the first episode.

Oh, well, I've only read the 1st book so far, so that's pretty much all I really know of it at this point. I can kind of assume what else it brings, but that's probably getting into spoiler terroritory and things I haven't read yet.

Yes the episode did not reveal what ... I assume it is something bad...

"Excessive"?. I could understand if this wasnt based on a book but the large majority of these scenes are in the source material. No offense but I'm always amazed by people who are offended by sex and nudity in 2011.

Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like I was singling you out. I only read the first book as well. The first book does mention why they fear winter, but I think it becomes so ingrained in the story that you probably overlook it.

And yes, it is likely exactly what you're thinking now.

                          edit:

I'm also going to stop talking about it because only one episode has aired and I don't want to turn this into I read the book and you're watching the show so you don't know what I know. Not my intention. Rather just keep it on episode one for now.

Yeah compared to Rome which was filled with boobies, weiner, bush, and far more graphic sex this show is very tame so far.

I should have clarified that I had no issues with it, as it's entirely from the text. I just mentioned my wife's quibbles. The end of the episode affected her more than anything else, and yes, I had to spoil what's to come.

I know. Rome was had way more. I dont think there was a woman on Rome who wasnt naked at one point in the series. Every person who watches an HBO show should EXPECT nudity. The Wire, Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Entourage, Treme, True Blood all have tons of nudity.

I have female friends who complained about the nudity in Boardwalk but love True Blood and I called them on that BS. If its on HBO expect them to push the envelope.
