Re: Game of Thrones (HBO Sunday nights @ 9PM EST)
HBO executives, while admittedly not the biggest fantasy genre fans, say they love Game of Thrones. Just don't try to get them to commit to it in perpetuity.
Reporters at the network's fall TV preview session Thursday did anyway, questioning whether or not the network would stick closely to George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books on which Game of Thrones is based, asking if they might consider seasons longer than 10 episodes, and generally attempting to get a decade-long order for future seasons.
HBO announces fall premiere dates for Boardwalk Empire, Hung, Bored to Death
HBO, in turn, reassured and made no guarantees. "We told George we'd go as long as he kept writing," network president of programming Michael Lombardo said. (Martin just released the fifth book, A Dance with Dragons, in his planned seven-book series.) The author is also involved in the production of the series, now in the middle of shooting Season 2.
"He is linked to everything [executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] are doing," network president of programming Richard Plepler said. That being said, Lombardo added, "I don't know where the show for us ends as opposed to the books... I think the challenge for us is always, how long do the creators want to stay with the show? Dan and David have signed on for a couple of years and we're going to have those conversations with them every couple years."
As for longer seasons? Executives said they wouldn't be able to do more without lengthy delays or diluting the quality of the stories."You got it man. I don't watch hockey." SidVish"I thought LeBron James was just going to be another addition to help me score."
Ricky Davis"The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." Albert EinsteinComment

st67, I don't want to convince you in anyway and understand why you would not want to watch the show after a favorite character dies but that was their is point of of him dying. He became a favorite on purpose so that when he died it really meant something. He is a symbol, you keep that in your mind when you keep reading about the Lannisters all you want is revenge like his family does.
Look what this death made you do, it made you so angry that you wanted to stop and delete an awesome finale, what story has ever done that to you?
Imagine what it does to all the people that cared and followed him as a leader.
That to me is moving. The first episode even foreshadowed Neds death when you saw the Direwolf die in the hands of a Deer (King Roberts house sigil). The 6 pups survive like his kids and the wolves definitely represent who the Stark kids are.
I say at least was watch the finale before giving up on it.Comment

If as someone halfway through book 3, I sometimes find myself thinking that its more frustrating to read than anything else, but I continue to read lol.Comment

A better analogy to me would be killing off Mr. Spock in Star Trek.
And yeah you should enjoy some characters. I'm not saying you shouldn't be upset about it. I think your feelings are justified. I'm saying that if you're watching this only to follow a character or two, you won't be watching long.
If instead you watch knowing anything can happen to anyone at anytime then you will be in for a great story. You may never love a character the same as a dead one, but the story will make it worth it.
If you're not interested in that, that's cool. Just know now that no one is safe.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I watched the finale elsewhere - but I'm still pissed off. I'm just grumpy because I'm pissed off with people killing one of the best damn actors around. The guy is brilliant and they just use him as a sacrificial lamb in everything he's in.
But the finale was good. I'll give the second season a shot.

Re: Game of Thrones (HBO Sunday nights @ 9PM EST)
I don't understand how you could be so annoyed when the tv series is based off the series of books? If something happens in the book there a great chance it'll happen in the tv show. To use your analogy that would be like a main character dying in a Harry Potter book then them not doing it in the movie because it might make some viewers disappointed.
As for the video above your post, that was pretty much my reaction.Comment

Re: Game of Thrones (HBO Sunday nights @ 9PM EST)
I haven't read the books, so your comment has no real purpose. I'm watching the show as my gateway to the series, and I'm annoyed with what happened. I'm pretty sure I'm afforded that response. I'd also say that the reaction they wished to elicit was that of anger and outrage, which was what I felt; so they did their jobs; only they did it a little too well and made me what to stop watching.

People who've read the books knew that Game of Thrones wouldn't be your typical TV show. Those who started with the show found that out by episode 9 -- emphatically if I may add. Believe me, I was shocked too since I only started reading after the season ended. I stuck with it and I'm sticking with it because the greater narrative is, well, great and to give it up 'cause of one character would be a shame.
One character does not define the show or the books -- characters do.Comment

Re: Game of Thrones (HBO Sunday nights @ 9PM EST)
As others have said, Ned isn't the reason for the show's nor the book's existence. If it wasn't clear from the very beginning, it's about the Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, Barratheons, etc.
