Michael Bay Tapped To Relaunch Live-Action TMNT Franchise

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon have brought Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form on to produce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the live-action film that reboots the film series launched by New Line in 1990. Bay, Fuller and Form will produce with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick.

The producers will begin meetings with writers in the next few weeks. The deal puts Bay in the center of two Paramount franchises, as he started production May 17 on Transformers 3, and is zeroing in on Rosie Huntington-Whitely to replace Megan Fox as love interest for Shia LaBeouf. TMNT, a co-production between Paramount and Nickelodeon, is an outgrowth of the $60 million acquisition made by Nick last October for global rights to the entire Turtles franchise. Right around the same time, Paramount made a first look deal with the Platinum Dunes partners, who will generate genre projects but also want to expand their scope. While they've already set up several projects including a Rob Cohen-remake of Fright Night, the Turtles film puts them into new territory.

I knew there was going to be a new TMNT live action movie and I felt that'd be potentially great however seeing that Michael Bay is behind this I lost all interest.

Yeah I was all for it. I read the comic way back in the day. Hated the way they made everything all bright and cheery in the cartoons and movies. I really enjoyed the more gritty style of the book.

Looking back on the Turtles movies, I can't recall one explosion. That will definitely change.

How is he going to do this without explosions?!

This sucks...first he ruins Transformers, now he is going for TMNT. What's next, Voltron?

I know I've been one of the heaviest bashers of Michael Bay on OS, but I kind of think this works for him. I get the whole Transformers thing with him and I'm assuming Nick is going to want this film to mirror the new series (two actually) the played as recently as last year.

Michael Bay will make explosions happen in that film and it will fit for the younger crowd.

But, claps to Nickelodeon for stepping out of a comfort zone recently with some film projects.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Kind of unrelated, and I'm not sure if it was Nickelodeon that produced it or not, but that made for TV movie "Turtles Forever" was awesome.

I thought the first movie was pretty dark and gritty.

True, at least more so than the others, but not as much as the books. At least in my opinion.

Actually that was a FOX 4Kids production which was the last ever for them. Nick hasn't done any Turtles work yet and I agree with you Turtles Forever was quite a good little TV movie.
