Re: What are you listening to?

Spoiler
Daft Punk | Random Access Memories: My kingdom for a full length Pharrell/Daft Punk collaboration. On this most recent listen, Touch (which is far from my favorite song) stood out to me due to Paul Williams’ powerful lyrics. I think they made Contact with the sole intention of showing off just how talented they are. When the cymbals start to crash around the 3:15 mark I absolutely go ape ****. Honestly, tweak three songs (Within, Touch, Beyond, Motherboard) and you have yourself a perfect 10. But while those songs are good, they stand out just a bit too much for me to call this perfect. 9.8/10
Fav Songs: Within, Instant Crush, Lose Yourself To Dance, Get Lucky, Fragments Of Time, Doin’ It Right, Contact
Future & Drake | What A Time To Be Alive: I’m going to level with y’all here, this is Future’s mixtape, Drake is just a feature with a freestyle at the *** end of it. Full disclosure: I hate Drake but enjoy Future so I decided to run the gambit with this. And maaaaan, Drake confirmed everything I think about him here. “You remind me of a quarterback, all your **** is in the past”. Bruh, log the **** off. Aubrey ruined a decent Future song with that single line. And then there’s the chorus to Big Rings. And then there’s the played out Plastic Bags metaphor. And then “me and my friends…”. No amount of Drake could ruin Future’s bars in Live From The Gutter though. 6.8/10, 7.5/10 if you edit out Drake.
Fav Songs: Live From The Gutter, I’m The Plug, Jumpman
Ryan Adams | 1989: While this doesn’t sound as good at Taylor’s original (Welcome To New York is a p. bad song by itself, and Adams’ cover does it no favors) it did kinda make me realize how good of a songwriter Taylor is how well written most of her songs on 1989 were. I still think the last three songs of the album are far and away the best. 6/10
Fav Songs: Style, Wildest Dreams, This Love, I Know Places, Clean
Beirut | No No No: This…is perfect morning commute music. It just put me in such a great mood. I can see myself listening to album a lot not because I find it great, but for the effect it has on me. I like how gradually the lyrics are phased out of the album 8.1/10
Fav Songs: Gibraltar, No No No, August Holland, As Needed, Perth, Fener
Travi$ Scott | Rodeo: It just seems that young Travis tried harder to be Kanye than anybody who isn’t named Kanye should try. I enjoyed the high points, but the low points just didn’t suit Travi$ well. Does a song with Quavo really need to transition to a slower beat? Also, the hooks tended to run long…really long. 3500 really had no business being 7:42. And the only song with Kanye, which this is very much shaped after, was under 3 minutes. I like what Travi$ brought to the table here, but there’s a lot that needed to be left on the cutting room floor. The saving grace on this album is that the features are great. 6.3/10
Fav Songs: Pray 4 Love, Nightcrawler, Piss On Your Grave, Flying High, I Can Tell, Ok Alright, Never Catch Me
CHVRCHES | Every Open Eye:
CHVRCHES SEASON HERE.
I LOVED every single, so I came into this with unrealistically high standards, and mother****ing CHVRCHES delivered. There are tracks that needs a few more listens for me really grasp how I feel about them considering I hated Science/Visions the first time I heard it and with each listen my love for it grew exponentially. I love how confident Lavren is now, she’s such a badass. My true spirit animal. Listen to Recover and then listen to Playing Dead, it’s incredible. I have yet to listen to Clearest Blue and not dance whenever the solo comes in. And Iain’s songs, they got so much better. You Caught The Light and Under The Tide were the low points because his vocals just weren’t as enticing or drawing as Lauren’s, and it still really isn’t, but that gulf is MUCH smaller now. I absolutely love this. Completely lived up to the hype for me. I’m going to hold off on giving it a perfect 10 to match TBOWYB for now, but it gets a tentative 9.8/10
Fav Songs: Never Ending Circles, Leave A Trace, Clearest Blue, High Enough To Carry You Over, Playing Dead, Bury It, Get Away, Bow Down
Big Grams | Big Grams: Speaking of meeting my expectations, this is also fire. Big Boi and Phantogram are both artists that are not my favorite in their respective genres, but artists I do enjoy a lot, but they’re sooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooood together. There’s not enough fire emojis to express how I feel about the Run The Jewels feature on here. Sarah Barthel saying “****boy” is hilarious. Just wish there was more to this, but also wish that Skrillex song never happened. 8.5/10
Fav Songs: Run For Your Life, Lights On, Fell In The Sun, Born To Shine
Disclosure | Caracal: This one did not meet my expectation. It’s very en vogue to say the second album is always ****, nut Caracal is a far cry from Settle. Started off great with The Weeknd and Sam Smith providing great features, but after the songs began to feel more and more like Settle B sides, save the Lorde feature and Willing & Able. Not to say it’s terrible, but lacked the “wow” factor Settle hit me with. 7.2/10
Fav Songs: Nocturnal, Omen, Holding On, Willing & Able, Magnets, Molecules, Moving Mountains
Fetty Wap | Fetty Wap: Longer than it had to be, like way longer, and the Monty verses began to get boring because Monty is not a great rapper, but Fetty’s personality bled out from most of the songs like blood from an undercooked steak and made this fun. I love Fetty because of that. Boomin’ is a highly underrated banger though and shows he has range as far as his rapping skills go. If you’re going to go 20 songs, more like that Mr. Wap. 7.8/10
Fav Songs: Trap Queen, How We Do Things, 679, Again, My Way, Boomin’, RGF Island, I’m Straight, Rock My Chain, Let It BangAnd may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

Re: What are you listening to?
Yeah, you can't really compare them then to now. Back then it was two guys who didn't really know what the hell they were doing. Totally different band now. I believe they release a new album next week.Wavves | Wavves: I decided it was time to see what the rest of Wavves' discography was about so I started at the source. I was feeling it early on but as it progress I just thought it lost the plot more and more to the point where I had to check to see if it was still the same album. I'll check out their follow up, but the back end of this really put me off. 6/10Comment
