Re: LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

Parents are looking for a TV that can pass as are when not turned on, they say the TV off is ugly to look at.

Best TV that can do this that's NOT the overpriced Frame TV? Hopefully OLED?

Unfortunately if they want something that doesn’t look like a TV when it’s on, the only choice is the frame. Ask them what’s more important: how it looks when it’s on? Or when it’s off?

So I’m thinking about getting the LG 65NANO90UPA. Thoughts? I need something new now that I have a new Xbox. My old tv isn’t cutting it.
        It’s $879 on Amazon.

Good price, I have the 86 inch version of this TV. The best non OLED TV you can buy.

Not trying to throw shade, but it's not the best non-OLED you can buy.

Re: LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

Here we go again...last Fall I decided to not get a TV and hold off until the next year, hoping there would be better deals.

Good news is that prices don't seem to be getting worse vs last year. Bad news is that it doesn't appear to have dropped much either.

The only thing I've really decided is that I'm really only looking at the TCL 5 Series. 6 series ends up being about 40% more than the 5 series.

Hopefully we see prices drop closer to black Friday.

Only thing I'm comparing now is the 2020 and 2021 models.

On rtings, both have about the same ratings (7.7 for mixed usage), and both seem comparable in all areas. The things which stood out is that the 2021 model has slightly better numbers for watching sports, but the big difference I saw is that 2020 has drastically better calibration numbers.

The 2021 one oddly enough seems to have gone on sale more often than 2020 (based on camelcamelcamel).

Assuming both wind up being similar prices (or 2021 one is slightly cheaper), which would be better option?

Take Rtngs with a grain of salt. They test things in movie mode, a mode people don't spend majority of their time in when they are watching TV and on some TVs they even leave stuff out that a TV can do. I noticed over the years they are bias towards certain brands and technologies. Like one TV could be brighter and have more features across the board, but yet get a way lower score then a brand and a technology that they like. Also seen 2 TVs get the same level of brightness, but one would be rated way lower then the other and the only difference be the brand. Once I started noticing that pattern of theirs 2 years ago, I don't even take them serious anymore.

Use your own eyes. Go to the store and look at both TVs in person. Just bite the bullet and pick a TV. There will never be a "perfect sale", if you are constantly waiting on that, you will be forever waiting. Only thing that you need to worry about is your lighting situation, your budget and what features you actually are going to use on a daily basis.

TVs in store are on max brightness and every other setting you can think of, so even that's not the best way to judge.

The kind of TV in the end probably won't matter as much to me. Once it doesn't break it'll be fine. But for $600+, I still want to get something good, even if it might not be "as good" as some $1000+ one.

I'm mainly just using it to watch sports and some other shows (and the occasional movie). Don't care as much if it has all these apps and so on, my cable provider has those apps on their menu already.

Might wind up being a gaming TV too if I get a PS5.

I'd still look at something that actually does 4K 120. Going to the store to make a decision is only good if you have an experience sales person such as myself, that doesn't care about trying to sell you the most expensive product.

If you are gonna watch a lot of sports, then definitely do what Scott said. 120hz really helps with watching sports.

Maybe look into Hisense. They have become a big player in the midrange over the last few years

I have one for my bedroom and its pretty good. They have one that has basically every next-gen gaming feature, but I can't remember the model or the price. But I'd check them out.

Hisense was another I was thinking of, but I heard people say those TVs are more at risk to break/die early on.

Same rate as TCLs and Walmart branded ONN TVs to be honest. Neither one of them have good quality control.

So 120hz is a must for sports?

And for something in the $500-$700USD range, is it really just TCL and Hisense as the good options?

Although I don't think either have 120hz for that price range.

I think you'll be fine with this TV. 120hz, 1500 nits, good gaming features. I've had my Hisense for a couple years now and it's been just fine.

For the money it's a good TV.

That's one model I was looking at. Not sure how easily available it is in Canada though. But I guess once I have a good idea of what I'm looking for I can keep checking between now and BF.

Between this and the TCL Series 5 (which doesn't have 120hz), that seems to be about all I can see that would be decent to get.
