Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I decided I'm going to replace my 5-year-old Samsung 50" DLP with my Christmas bonus this year.
90% of what I watch on my TV is sports and I still play a decent amount of video games - enough that I want to stick with 1080p. I'm leaning plasma because of that, looking at 55" but I can stick with a 50" too. I have no interest in 3D obviously.
From what I've gathered, Panasonic is the clear leader in plasmas, anyone here disagree with that?
For 50" I'm looking at this...
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIER...2234120&sr=1-2
It's $770 (for those who don't want to bother with the add-to-cart-to-see-price fiasco).
For 55"...
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIER...7E/ref=lh_ni_t
It is a 3DTV which is annoying because I'll be paying for technology I'm never going to use. It's the only 55" plasma that Panasonic offers from what I can tell. It's $1,100.
Budget isn't a concern, $1,100 is fine but I'm not sure how I feel about it being a 3DTV.
Reading the user reviews about flucuating brightness problems is a concern, does anyone here have experience with it?

You will be hard pressed to find big screen tv's coming out that will not have 3D option. The Samsung is a top of the line plasma and if you want a good deal then get the 51 D6500 or D7000....Good tv's with great pq and best colors aroundComment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
We're in the hunt for the same TV my friend, I'm looking for those models in a 55". CNet adores the NX720, but the 929 is one of their top 5, and the 820 has local dimming and a more updated processor.
I haven't seen any great deals so far this weekend.
Anyone with any of these 3 Sony's care to advise on which one to go with? Pretty big price difference amongst the 3, and I've always tried to go with the XBR series. But the other two just look like amazing TVs for the money.Comment

Honestly, with the prices on 1080p falling so much, that's what I would be looking for.Is this TV worth it? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Samsung-51...ndingMethod=rr

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
My brand new Sharp LC-60E79U arrived; I ordered it on Black Friday. The picture quality is great and some of you techies would love all the setting adjustments one can make.
Let me know if anybody on the fence has questions about it; I will try my best to answer questions.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
So I fell asleep watching Netflix last night on my Samsung plasma. My estimate was that it was on a still image for around 6 hours. I'm freaking out, but I don't seem to see any IR or burn-in on the screen. I've had the set for around 3 months so I think I've successfully broken the set in.
Do you guys think I'll be alright?Comment

Nothing to worry about at all. If you've had the set for three months the chances of IR reduce by a mile.So I fell asleep watching Netflix last night on my Samsung plasma. I have left a static image on my set (Samsung PN64D7000) overnight at least 3 or 4 times and have never had the slightest hint of IR.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
So long as your still image didn't resemble that of an inkblot (that is, too many contrasting edges), you'll probably be fine. If you haven't noticed any IR at this point, I wouldn't go out of my way to look for it. Just watch some more normal television, and you should be okay.So I fell asleep watching Netflix last night on my Samsung plasma. My estimate was that it was on a still image for around 6 hours. By the way, I haven't tested it for myself (and I shudder in fear of even trying to), but my television has a feature that will supposedly shut off the panel if it recognizes it has had a still image for fifteen minutes. Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I just wanted to mention that my television gets IR after watching a letterbox movie. Could I notice it under normal viewing conditions? No. Could anybody else notice it while I'm running slides? No. Can I notice it while running slides without having to scrutinize every last pixel of my screen just to look for it? No. But when I do, I see that it's there. That being said, that is considered a "hint" of IR, in which case my television is still prone to it.
This only really concerns me for games or programs that have static logos/HUD interfaces. The fact that my TV can still possessively retain that image alarms me, but I've only had my television for about seven weeks, so I should give it a little more wiggle room before I go into panic mode about ever leaving it on overnight.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

No, it does have a feature that will sort of dim the image after a set amount of time though. So long as your still image didn't resemble that of an inkblot (that is, too many contrasting edges), you'll probably be fine. It also has a scrolling picture that fades from black to white that I used and didn't seem to see any IR or burn-in, so I think I'm good.
Thanks for the feedback, fellas.Last edited by elTodd; 12-06-2011, 11:27 AM.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I wouldn't worry about it Blzer, my set still does the same thing when watching anything in 2:35:1 aspect ratio. It's no big deal. I watch or play a game afterwards and the letterbox IR is gone within seconds. Just take some of our advice here man and quit stressing, we've all been through it. I used to be so damn paranoid like you are at first, but unless you leave a static image on the TV for hours I would just enjoy the nice set that you have.I just wanted to mention that my television gets IR after watching a letterbox movie.
