Is there any particular reason why plasma manufacturers insist on glare screens instead of matte? Is it a manufacturing requirement because I would gladly take a slight decrease in picture quality in a plasma if it could come with a matte screen.
I did some googling and went to ikea and bought some LED lights that stick on the back of the TV and make a backlight. It looks awesome, makes it easier on your eyes and allows me to keep my room dark all the time so no lamps on behind me.

Daytime I just keep the shades near the TV down, but I did that anyway before I got the plasma..my place gets lit up real easily so all blinds open would be a killer for viewing anything.

I bought that set for my girlfriend on her birthday a few months ago. If you can grab it for $650 (what I paid for it) or less, then it is a great value set.

By purchasing a DLP set in 2012 you are sacrificing a lot just to have a larger screen.

I wouldn't say that. My 61" DLP still has a great picture. Plus, a 73" at that price is insane. I returned my Sharp 80" and got the Sharp 3D 70" model but that set me back $2800.

One drawback is the size of this thing. This thing is a foot and a half thick and my sharp is 2 inches thick.

I am about to pull the trigger on a Panasonic 55 inch ST30 3D plasma from amazon. If you have an amazon card you get an additional 10%, free shipping, and no tax. Total $1,035.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Alright, so I'm in the market for a 42", 46", or 55" HDTV. I have had a 32" Vizio as my gaming television for four years now. It has served me well but I would like to get a larger television and mount it on the Man Room wall.

It is the week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday so I'm hoping that several amazing deals will surface!

                    Price range: $600 area

+ I'd prefer and LCD or LED
+ I don't need top of the line (obviously as my price range is low)
+ I'll be gaming and watching some TV/movies on it

I'm looking for a respectable TV that is in the middle of the road and best bang for my buck.

I'll probably be posting some deals I find and trying to get feedback on the TV here.

                    I'm excited!

Deal #1: Dynex 46" LCD 1080p 60 Hz ($380 free in store pickup)

ND, stay away from Dynex. If anything Insignia is a better deal as they use LG panels in their sets.

Thanks...any particular reasons why I should stay away from Dynex?

Also, if I'm going to be gaming (sport titles), watching sports, and some blue-ray movies...what specs should I look for?

                        720p? 1080p?
                        60 Hz? 120 Hz?

                        Another TV:

                        55" Westinghouse 1080p

You can't go wrong with that Westinghouse. It's not the greatest but you can't beat that price.

For an LCD you definitely want 120Hz over 60Hz. With the latter you'll probably see motion blur, which will surely detract from your viewing. You might not, but it's better safe than sorry.

As for gaming, you'll have to check the response time of the panels. I never noticed an issue with my Sony XBR5 from several years ago, but then again I suck with shooters and other "timing based" games (save Rock Band, where you self-calibrate) so I'm not sure if it was the TV or my non-existent skill.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Thanks for the input. The Westinghouse is at the ceiling of my price range...but still in it. It's also a HUGE television as it would be a nice upgrade from the 32".

It's 120 Hz and hopefully it has a "game mode" where I can go to 60 Hz. I've read that there is possibly lag with 120 Hz.

I'll do a bit more research on that topic.

I plan on having the TV mounted and finding a moderate surround sound system so I'm not too worried about the TV speakers. I'll also be hooking up an antenna as that's all I need!

Everything else comes down to opinion, but here is at least one FACT for you:

Absolutely ZERO point in getting anything less than a 1080p capable set if you plan on watching Blu-ray Discs.
