Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I need some help guys. I have spoke to my wife and we are going to cut the cable cord, going with services like HULU Plus, Amazon Instant, VUDU, etc for our viewing needs. We also are going to need full web page surfing integrated into the TV so streaming TV shows from webpages is also a option.

I'm trying to find a decent TV which features all these needs. Currently the VIZIO 70" E701-A3 seems best value for my needs. Yet I also read the Sharp LC-70LE650 is a good value also.

I'm trying to stay in the $1,500 range and screen size around 60" to 70". If any of you TV guru's have a better set which features all this could you PLEASE hook a brother up on that info.

Just wondering, what are you going to do about live sports? Sunday Ticket? MLB.tv? How is college football streamed live?

We will be saving roughly $100 a month on cable so we can afford to go run to Buffalo Wild Wings or something like that.

Don't get me wrong Kev, it won't be roses and rainbows by any means. It is just crazy how much these cable providers rape us, I mean $1,400 a year on TV and I only use 1/3rd of the channels and on those channels maybe only watch 1/30th of the shows. If we can save $1,400 a year that is a nice TV or hell a X1 to go along with a TV

Basically there is some downsides but there is other options for sports like ESPN GO or even some games are televised over the internet, so I'll be able to catch some like that. It will take some getting us to, but I think after 6 months to a year I will hardly notice the losses compared to the money saved.

Yeah I get it, trust me. Cable is expensive and I know there is all that behind the door deals in that business that make those prices so high. My DirecTV bill is way too big. I've considered going the streaming services route like you, the only thing stopping me is sports. I live in the Braves blackout region, so I can't watch them on MLB.tv, just on SportsSouth as part of my DTV service. I gotta have ESPN during the fall for college football. Those two things are deal-breakers for me and I'll just have to keep paying the prices.

Don't forget about Roku or AppleTV or Chromecast. Also, check out www.antennaweb.org to see what HD channels you can pull in OTA.

If you can get OTA HD channels, then this might be worth a look if you want DVR functionality. http://www.amazon.com/SiliconDust-HD...ilicon+homerun

I have a question for you guys....Is it normal for a larger screen TV (65in) to flicker a bit & for the color tint to be off for a bit (maybe 10-15 secs) when you first turn it on? Does said TV need to "warm up"?

^ Is it a plasma? If so, I've never heard of such a thing. You do want phosphors to warm up to stabilize colors, though (like when you appoint a calibrator to come to your house, they'll ask you to make sure the TV is on for one or two hours before they arrive... but that's for precision).

No it's actually an LED. I bought a Vizio e650i-a2 about a month ago from Amazon & this started happening maybe about a week or so after I first got it. I spoke to Amazon twice so far & they told me the first time that it was a static discharge that was happening & had me do a factory reset which helped a bit at first but the issue returned soon after. The second time they told me it was normal for a TV of this size to do that & I shouldn't be worried.

This is my first large screen TV so I don't know if that's true or not but for the bread I shelled out I want to make sure or exchange it if I need to.

What's most amazing is how small the picture (and the towers) make that television look. I'm looking at my 60F8500 as we speak, and I can only imagine how big that area is with that TV there when you watch it.

                            Nice setup, man.

Thanx man.... Yea the picture does make it look smaller but my living room is not very big and right now sitting here the tv and speakers are big big big

So you have the plasma from Sammy at same size? Cool

I was wanting to switch my LED to that plasma but decided since I game so much to just stick with the LED and the fact that it is very thin makes it much more appealing to the look on the wall.

My speakers are heavy and tall. Each weight about 45 lbs. But not sure yet if I should remove the grills or keep them on...

I have Verizon Fios and a Denon AVR X2000 receiver.
