Yeah, exactly...and distance from 4k TVs you don't really get any improvements...even 1080p you have to be a decent distance away.

Just wondering what thing like 3D they'll try to push on us next...I'm sure they'll have technology advances otherwise, but they always need something new to get early adopters to upgrade. Otherwise they end up like iPads where people realize they don't need to upgrade often.

I think for the next few years it'll be all about 4k and HDR, until there's some breakthrough tech or something to allow for movement in other areas.

Except 3D is still relevant in projectors.

True...and maybe they'll start adding it back to tvs in the future, who knows

Tangentially, VR is probably the next big thing. Relative to consuming content like movies it will probably only ever be about as relevant as 3D which has probably peaked barring some glasses-free innovation.

With more comfortable headsets and higher resolutions it could be by far the best way to consume a lot of media content individually in the future.

I agree, though I think VR taking over for TV and things is a ways away....

I can see playing games and stuff on them, but not really imagining my entire family each having their own headset....plus how can you watch a kid while on VR?

Right now it's big getting 4k/HDR and those qualities will keep getting better...

Not sure if higher resolution is really necessary anytime soon...
Bigger and badder OLED screens. Currently, I believe LG is the only one producing them at this time.

In a few years, Samsung will be delivering QLED screens, which have the benefits of OLED screens combined with the quantum-dot technology that LED's are using right now for HDR. It's also significantly cheaper to make than OLED.

Yeah, that's why I said individually. I love my Rift, but can't really enjoy the 'simulated theater' experience for long periods of time due to resolution and the bulk/weight of the headset. Can't play any games w/ text (ie World of Warcraft) either really, because it's unreadable.

Allergies and eye infections have left it in the drawer for weeks, much to my wife's ire, lol.

About 8-10 feet as it's a smaller room. He's not getting it as a main tv just something to have to use at times when upstairs.

Wife kinda spasm'd over chat when I flew a trial balloon about wanting to upgrade our perfectly fine 60" Samsung w/ a 65-75" 4k. Might compromise and get a 60" 4k. I think the mount the current one is on is only rated for a 60" max anyways, so wouldn't have to move/replace it. Current TV would go in our loft where an older 40" is setup.

Longer term I know I'll get to put a TV in the office too, and can probably get away with a 50-55" 4k with how cheap those have been getting.

My living room tv is a 47" one...50-55" are great value. I'm more tempted with a 60-65" 4k, but prices are just so high I can't justify it still. I figure if I'm paying to upgrade that extra size will be worth it.

I think he'll be fine with the Insignia to be honest

I've seen insignias in person and never ever been impressed. I also never hear people rave about them on AVS forums, but that's my opinion.

Most would probably be OK with an Insignia, just wouldn't put together a living room around one or anything. Office, kids room, etc? Sure.

Hopefully glasses free 3D is after 4K/UHD. At that point though I'll probably be ready for a projector on a huge screen, so it wouldn't even benefit me assuming it wouldn't be tech available on a projector.
