I joined the "cable cutter" crowd three months ago. Saving almost $100/mo is very nice and surprisingly I don't miss HD all that much. Guess when you really sit down and prioritize things it doesn't bother you as much. Since Comcast filters your package via the cable box you can just plug the coax from the wall directly into your TV and I still get about 85 channels for free. I very rarely watch any TV outside of sports so Hulu is fine for me.


For Christmas though I think I'm going to get the HD Slingbox and put it at my parents' house. They have DTV and an extra HD box in the basement that they rarely use so I can put it on that and get DTV for free pretty much.

I don't have cable at college (didn't want to pay $192 per semester) and, surprisingly, it hasn't been too bad. ESPN3 comes in great use for sports and I can find most of the shows I want on the internet. In addition, I just got Netflix, which will provide me with tons of movies streaming over the internet legally and in good quality.

I wonder when everything becomes based off the internet? I mean no TWC or Comcast. Just get some cords to go from your CPU to your TV and you're all good.

Maybe I'll go pitch this idea to TWC...

Nuggets games are literally the only reason I'm not living on my computer right now... stupid League Pass blacking out local games. Is there ANY way around that (legal of course, no infractions..)?\

EDIT: And HD nature shows, which will make me sad not to have. Some are online in HD streaming though, so I can probably still get my fix between that and Netflix.

I did what your proposing just after the final four this year. Going thru the NHL and NBA playoffs was tough, but I found some friends and streams to make the leap even easier. This year was the first time ever I watched bits and pieces of playoff game in the NHL and the Association. I say go for it!!!!

I have been watching a ton of ESPN3 on my 360 and I love it.
Ton of games on there to watch.

Hey man... I am not home.. But haven't turned on my 360 in a while.. How do I get my 360 to play this?? I have the newer slim model... Any Info would be great.. Also, Anyone use Hulu Plus?? Is it worth 8 bucks a month?

My wife and I are moving next weekend and I am thinking about going without cable and doing everything through the internet. We have a PS3 and also a computer in the bedroom that I can use to connect our two TV's to the internet.

Besides Netflix and HuluPlus what other services are available to me on Playstation 3?

vudu is an on demand video service through the ps3. prices vary based on whether you order the sd/hd/hdx (1080p with 5.1 surround sound) it works pretty well from what i've seen.

Haven't had a PS3 in several years. Can you surf the web? If so, you can go to the major networks website and watch the episodes there. The regular hulu only has the 5 latest episodes for the current season.

We can surf the web in the bedroom from our computer. Currently there is no way to surf the web on the main television except for PS3.

That's what I was referring to. My apologies for not being more specific. Can you surf the web using the PS3? If so, I was suggesting going to the FOX, NBC, ABC websites if you wanted to watch full episodes that weren't available on the non-subscription hulu. (You could always just go ahead and get huluplus instead)

If you have a HTPC or laptop hooked up to the tv, I found a great little backlit keyboard and mouse remote.



Beats having to use a full sized keyboard and mouse combo and the backlight is essential for not having to turn on lights when you want to make changes.

However, if you are patient you can win an ebay auction for anywhere between $30-40 shipped. I went the ebay route and paid $33 shipped.

Just do a search for "rii remote" or "rii keyboard" There are 2 versions: with or without blu tooth. (Both are backlit) Obviously, blu tooth is going to run $10-15 more expensive.

Had mine for about a month and have been impressed.

I haven't really tried using the web on the PS3 outside of youtube so I'm not sure if it will be suitable or not. It would be nice if it was suitable so I don't have to go out and get something else to connect to the TV.

Any thoughts on Roku?

I need some help. I am tired of the crazy amount of money I am paying for cable and am ready to make a switch to stream everything to my tv, but I am unsure of what would fit my needs the most.

Here is what I have:

-50" Sony HDTV (about 4 years old-Slimmer than old school but not LCD thin)

-PS3/Wii

-Toshiba Laptop with i-5 Core Technology.

-3 kids (4 1/2, 2 1/2 and 6 months)

I am looking for the ability to watch:

-Some popular tv shows (HULU Plus sounds about right)

-Kids tv shows (HULU Plus again)

-Movies/kids and adults (Netflix sounds about right)

-Watch local programming maybe via OTA antenna?

***(THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST) HAVE to be able to watch Kentucky Basketball. A lot of games will be on ESPN 3 so that will have to be an option. Also a lot of games are streamed online by a big fan for everyone to see through a website like "Justintv", so if there is the ability of watching it that through a streaming site like that as well then I am good to go

-Potentially the ability to watch MLB games maybe through MLB.tv


I know the ps3 can do HULU and Netflix and maybe it can do MLB as well? What about watching a live stream over the internet? Any other major plans for ps3? What about VUDU and is that worth it? What about Roku? Boxee? Logitech Revue with Google TV? Playon? So many options!!! (not a bad thing)

Anyone have any suggestions as to which is the best route (cost effective too) to go that will be able to satisfy what I am looking to be able to do? I am so lost looking at these different options out there. Would I like to have Pandora on my tv? Sure, but it isn't a necessity by any means. Would like to be able to record (like a DVR) a Kentucky game and watch it later but not sure that is available for streaming content.

Any help would be appreciated!

I Ditched cable myself last year, we basically have the same stuff as you, including three kids.

Right now we're netflix exclusive (TV Shows up to last season on most although SNL has been updating the day after airing) and anteanna for local channels. CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, etc... And MLB.TV on the PS3 of course, but we don't get the SF Giants games. That's the one HUGE drag in the whole ordeal.

But tbh nobody has noticed. My kids stay occupied with everything netflix has to offer, and it seems as long as my wife has access to Dog the bounty hunter (also netflix) she's a happy camper.

And I no longer have my 180.00 cable bill.

I just wish we could get in market sports teams, but oh well.
