    Re: Getting rid of cable?

Dude, it's been a wild road without cable for the past year.

Absoultely weird. I'm still not used to it.

But I still get my sports games.. just not everything else. I can't say my life is better or worse off...

I'd like to get rid of cable too, but I can't live without college sports. Pretty much ESPNU and Fox Sports Northwest are the only 2 reasons I haven't brought it up to the fiancee yet.

        Re: Getting rid of cable?

Been without cable for about a year, if not more, now as well. Like everyone else has said, I don't miss the TV much at all. We still get the basic channels: CBS, FOX, NBC, etc. And that's what NFL football comes on. No ESPN MNF, but if I need to, I can go out or find it online.

I actually do 99% of my internet browsing via my PS3's web browser. It's been awesome! My one thing is that it's probably taking life off my PS3. But no problems yet, knock on wood. It's 2 years old and been using it this way for a year now. I don't surf the whole web, just a few basic sites (OS, ESPN.com, YouTube).

I'll be getting the free MLB.tv trial for the start of this season, see how it is, then probably purchase it if I use it enough. I believe the NHL has a deal with PS3 now, but I'm an in-market Flyers fan, so that would be useless to me. Blackout restrictions are so bogus. I definitely do miss my Flyers and I'll miss the playoffs, but I don't miss the cable bill.
        NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
        NFL - Buffalo Bills
        MLB - Cincinnati Reds

And of course, I have Netflix as well. I pay just over $9/mo. Signed up for the free month trial in Oct/Nov, then stayed with it. I believe they changed their tiers since then (I'm all instant stream & 1 DVD out) but I'm grandfathered in.

I've thought about Hulu Plus for PS3, but I can hop on a computer every now and then to watch regular Hulu. Should have a laptop in the next few months anyway. The girlfriend & I were big on watching our shows on there for a while but have cooled off for a good few months now.

I think in the coming years, cable will be obsolete. Comcast and such will try to fight it but eventually it'll be all over for them. We'll get our sports packages via internet soon enough! If they know what's good for them.

Haha seems to be the same story for alot of people. I'm pretty much the same, verbatim. I'm so hoping for an in market sports package online....

                Re: Getting rid of cable?

My girlfriend and I have already decided that we'll be ditching cable when we move in together (hopefully this summer). We're going to be on a budget with student loans and such, and we never watch TV live anymore, so I don't see why we should keep cable. I watch everything on Hulu on my laptop right now and she's got a Netflix account.

Just like everyone else, I'm worried about sporting events. The only thing I really care about is Steeler football. I can do without Penn State football (I only watched one game last year anyway because I was working for a local NCAA D-II football team) and I can't watch Pens or Pirates now because my family has Dish Network, which doesn't carry Root Sports (formerly FSN Pittsburgh). If I stay in the Pittsburgh market, I won't have much of a problem if I can an antenna for OTA channels, but we're in the process of job interviews and the waiting game for a few possibilities in North Carolina, which means OTA wouldn't do much for me being out of market. I'm sure I could catch the occasional game that played on CBS, but I'm not sure.

We're not sure about our TV situation right now. I've got a 10-year-old HDTV sitting in my bedroom right now, but it's HUGE, so I don't know if it'll make the move to North Carolina. I've got an Xbox 360 hooked up to it that I could use for Netflix right now. I just need to get a Live membership (I had one before, but I let it expire).

She's got her Ipad too, which she uses a lot to watch netflix.

I'm just trying to figure out if Hulu Plus is worth the purchase to be able to watch new TV shows on a full-size screen. I tried to come up with a way to hook my laptop up to the TV, but I found out after buying some cables through Monoprice that either the TV or the laptop (or both) isn't equipped to run that set-up, so I can't just stream my laptop to my TV, but it would be nice.

Does anyone have any experience with a Roku? I see it played Netflix, Hulu Plus and some other services. I would like to be able to watch on a TV in both the living room and the bedroom if possible, so I need something in addition to my Xbox 360. I wonder if it would just make more sense to get a Blu-Ray player capable of running Netflix and Hulu Plus, since I don't have one of those yet.

                  Re: Getting rid of cable?

We're in the first stages of seriously thinking about ditching DirecTV. I watch a lot of TV, but the majority of the things I watch I can catch on Hulu, company websites or youtube after they air. It's very rare that I actually watch anything as it airs anyways.

Obviously like everyone else, I'll miss my sports programming, especially football. I'm sure I can find streams online of sports I really want to watch if push came to shove.

In the end we're going to try the "we're cancelling our account" bit in hopes of getting cheap/free programming for awhile when our contract runs out.

This is the one thing that is keeping me from making the switch, it's sad because it's only during basketball season and the NBA has League Pass broadband, but I need DTV for the regional channels to watch the Grizzlies.
I have been waiting and waiting for Fox Sports to do some type of broadband thing, as soon as it pops up I will cancel DTV immediately. It's sad how much I pay to watch the same few channels, that Netflix ends up having on instant stream.

I bought my house nine months ago & when I moved out of my apartment I cancelled my Direct TV & bought myself an HD TV tuner. It was hard at first cause we did miss being able to switch between all the Direct TV channels but we got over it fast. Signed up to Netflix about 8 months ago & have never looked back. My wife watches some TV shows on Hulu but Im seriously considering Hulu Plus for my PS3. Would like to watch current shows on my TV rather than my laptop.

I'm ditching DTV this week and won't be getting cable to replace it. We just don't watch TV in a "Cable way" anymore. I won't miss the sports at all. All of my teams are not located where we live, and I don't have the time to just watch games that aren't a priority.

What I will work on this summer is a viable antenna/tuner set up so we can get local TV. Hopefully by fall I'll be able to see the Red Sox in the world series.

I run OS X, so that means nothing to me right now. It's not what I'm trying to do anyway. I can already hook up my external HD to the 360 and watch any files I have.

I want to literally show on my TV what is showing on my computer screen. Basically, I want my TV to act as a second computer screen.

What inputs are on your tv and laptop? Seems like some combo should work.... obviously HDMI or component would be the best options

Haven't had cable since January. It kinda sucks, but I do have espn360 which usually has something interesting on. Not sure what I'll do come football season if there is one. I've got several bars I can watch from within walking distance from my home if I really want to watch something I guess. I'm not a big TV person anyway.
