I'm not sure OTA is going to be an option for me. We are moving in to a condo building where our unit faces south. The direction for an antenna according to antennaweb would need to be 26 degrees for our local channels.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
Really though, I use a run of the mill TV top digital antenna that plugs into the wall socket and it works great. And we're not in a very good spot for antenna TV either. I just found that if I get one amplified (plug into the wall style), it worked much better.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. Re: Getting rid of cable?
I will have to try that out and see if it works...do you have to have it point out the window or anything?Comment

Mine's alot like this one.
But black. Just remember to get the amplified one if you do go for it.Last edited by Chef Matt; 01-10-2011, 04:48 PM.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. Re: Getting rid of cable?
That looks neat. I'll have to look in to it. Thanks!
I haven't really tried using the web on the PS3 outside of youtube so I'm not sure if it will be suitable or not. It would be nice if it was suitable so I don't have to go out and get something else to connect to the TV.
Any thoughts on Roku?
Which is worthless if you're already getting netflix through a video game console or your blu ray player.Comment

Re: Getting rid of cable?
Just an update....
We moved a couple weeks ago and haven't gotten cable as of yet. We have been using the PS3 and my laptop and have been watching all our shows that way. We were talking about it last night and other than not being able to see sports games we have not really missed having cable. I bought a little antenna to watch OTA so we have access to the news and between that and streaming on the internet it seems like it has been enough for us.
We talked about a part of the money we are saving from not having cable might go towards upgrading our internet speed...we currently have a 3 MB connection that is usually about 2.5 MB on the speedtests.Comment

Re: Getting rid of cable?
Yea, it has me thinking pretty hard right now. I think I enjoy being able to come home and flick through the channels more than having cable itself. Also DVR is huge for me since I don't catch things when they come on.
I also have an HDTV so the thought of watching things not in HD bothers me a little.
Any suggestions or opinions?Originally posted by MoJust once I'd like to be the one they call a jerk off.Originally posted by MoYou underestimate my lazinessOriginally posted by Mo**** ya

Re: Getting rid of cable?
For us it was almost a no brainer. We hardly ever watched cable with the exception of all the sports. But the amount we were paying was just too much so once MLB.TV came out on the PS3 that was it I pulled the plug. Literally.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. Re: Getting rid of cable?
I pulled the plug 2 weeks ago, and am glad I finally made the leap. Now, I rely on my HTPC, PS3, and 360 on my main TV and my 2nd HTPC and Wii on my bedroom TV. While I miss my DVR, I've gotten used to viewing programs after they've aired or one of the streaming programs to provide me with my normal TV programs (that I can watch at my leisure). With the savings in money, I upgraded my Internet connection (from 10mb to 30mb) and have been loving my new connection.Comment

Re: Getting rid of cable?
So I'm seriously thinking about this now. I have a 42' HDTV, does you sacrifice some of the image quality from using your computer? Also, does it kill the overall computer life using your laptop/computer like this?Originally posted by MoJust once I'd like to be the one they call a jerk off.Originally posted by MoYou underestimate my lazinessOriginally posted by Mo**** ya

Not sure about the life expectancy of the PC though.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. Re: Getting rid of cable?
TBH Only my kids use the PC for Hulu. We use the PS3(s) hooked up to our HDTV(s) (Living Room and Bedroom) for netflix and MLB.TV when it's in season. The quality does suffer a very small bit but not enough for me to care about it.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
The good thing about all this is no extra hardware use on your console, it's all streaming media. We have 120gb slims though and those things seem to be much more reliable than the older PS3s.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon.
