That's great when they try to keep you. Mine didn't make a real effort. They simply tried to offer me a cheaper package but there was no urgency in retaining a customer since 1996. I guess they still have us for Internet.

Funny thing about them. I called and canceled cable and phone. The next day our Internet was down. Convenient. I had to call them and sit on the phone for 30 minutes so they could pretend something was wrong that needed fixing.

"Sometimes when you downgrade services, it affects others."

In other words: "Let's see how you like not having Internet, service downgrader."

And then they wonder why people dislike their service.

      Re: Getting rid of cable?

I was paying $87 a month with local cable.. high def + dvr, but no movie packages. It just was just ridiculous. Last week I signed up for DirecTV when I saw a flyer in the mail. High def + DVR for $37 for 1st yr, $67 for second yr + I get 3 months free for all movie channels and 1 yr free NFL Sunday ticket. I'm loving DirecTV so far.. Keep a look out for deals if you are looking to switch. In total I'll be saving over $800 over the 2 years.

        Re: Getting rid of cable?

My HDTV is older so it doesn't have a internal tuner. Plus I'd like to have a DVR for recording. Can anyone recommend a tuner/DVR?

        Thanks.

Not sure if anyone knows of a non-paying stand alone device, but in the past I've used a TV card into my PC. Of course you'd have to get your TV cable to your PC port. I will tell you that if you look at an ATI TV card, you have to have an ATI video card, though over time the ATI softward for it has largely sucked.

Well decided to get an antenna so I could watch my Irish on NBC and the girl gets to see The Bachelor/ette on ABC.

$40 for a RCA antenna was a GREAT buy. The channels are crystal clear and appear to be HD.

I am thoroughly impressed so far

How are antennas these days? Are they obtrusive with a nice HDTV? I don't know how far they've advanced, but rabbit ears won't cut it for me these days. I'd love to get local television though.

You can get the traditional ones, but they also make flat ones as well. As long as it's powered, you should be okay.

The channels are either in 1080i or 720p....which is HD. Nobody is delivering in 1080p except some of those streaming on demand movie places like VUDU.

Since it's digital it's going to be all or nothing. Perfection or no picture (or pixelated when trying to pick up a weaker signal)

Somebody posted an antennae reception link above that you can check out for your area. I'm glad I looked at it before buying because about the only thing I was going to pull in was ABC and PBS. Wasn't worth it.

I'm so close to going cable free but the one thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger is losing NESN. The Bruins are on NBC or Versus a lot this upcoming season but that won't be the case in most years. Any options for watching sports online?
