I am planning on buying a laptop for college, no going to "build" a pc like this thread is about. I want to be able to play games on it without having to run everything on low.

My major question is what exactly should I be looking for spec wise, or do you guys have any suggestions for laptop in the 1000-1500 price range that would be good for gaming?

Just about any laptop that cost between $1000-$1500 will be great for college use. Look for atleast Windows 7 Home premium, 4gigs of RAM, a Intel i5 processor, a web cam, cd/dvd burner, and atleast 250gb hdd. That should be easy to get for what you are wanting to pay.

Now when it comes to gaming, it depends on what kind of games you want to play, ill assume you want to play high performace games like Skyrim or Modern Warfare, if you want to play game like that then check this link out.

Playing your favorite PC games with maxed-out settings doesn't mean you need a big desktop rig. We've found the best gaming laptops for every type of gamer based on our in-depth, hands-on reviews.

Great processor, better than the one in my home built desktop!

Good video card, even though I prefer AMD chipsets but that's just a personal thing.

^^^ Those are the two most important things for gaming.

1 TB hard drive. Which is an insane amount, I have 250 GB and not even close it filling it up.

8 GB of RAM that is upgradable to 16 GB, but 8 should do just fine.

4 USB 3.0 ports! All you need to know about them is they are very useful and faster than the standard USB ports.

17'' screen. I don't understand how people that play games on a laptop do it on smaller screens.

If I was buying a laptop for games this would be the one I buy.
Well I guess I bought the right one then. I saw that one in Best Buy yesterday and bought it before ever seeing this message from you.

I appreciate the feedback from everyone here it helped me in deciding what exactly to look for so I knew what to get when I finally went into a store.

Definitely worth the money. Only game I've played so far is The Old Republic, but on the highest settings it runs without any hiccups.

I can tell you my desktop has specs pretty close to this and it can play Skyrim on Ultra with a bunch of mods no problem.

660m will probably start having issues (dip below 30 fps) with Skyrim on ultra.

How much would it cost to build a PC that can handle "ultra" settings of games like Skyrim, GTA, Sleeping Dogs, etc? The only thing I need to upgrade is my tower.

If you step AA back on Sleeping Dogs one notch, about $500, with AA on extreme you'll spend twice that just on GPUs.

How long would that last for future games do you think? Admittedly I don't game a lot on the PC, but with the mods out and the ability to play with an xbox controller it just seems the way to go.

My 6970 Twin Frozr III runs everything on extreme with ease. Average of 57FPS.

Everything I've been seeing has FPS dipping into the low twenties and even into the low teens even on the best setups (7970 xfire, 680 SLI, 690) when AA is on extreme. It does no good to average 57fps if you are having max FPS in the low 100s with dropped frames and periodic low teens.

What setups would you guys recommend for a tower? My max budget would be $500-600, but would obviously welcome a more "budgeted" approach if drop in output isn't too material.

I also want to build this thing myself. I had some guys I worked with build the one I have now, but I would like to at least try to build it myself this time.

I would use that as a framework, take a couple weeks and watch prices and get one component cheaper where you can or a better part for around the same money.

Perhaps the game is more cpu oriented when dealing with the framerates. I know GTA IV was. I have an FX 8150 8 core processor. I get no stuttering at all. Crossfire will be better once new drivers are released supporting crossfire for the game. I get no stuttering or slowdown. I just beat the game, and the only slowdown that I got, was when it was supposed to happen (bullet time, etc).
