Wow the final scene was great! What took so long for backup to come?

Does anybody else feel like Ray is like the perfect anti-hero? I like his character more and more every episode.

I knew it was inevitable, but all the comparisons to season 1 suck. This thing is standing on its own. Once the shock of seeing the four main leads playing in the True Detective world wore off, I've been focused on this story and this story alone. You can't recapture what season 1 had; perfect story, perfect actors, played perfectly. If this was called "Cop Story," everyone would be ****ting their pants over the actors and storyline. Instead it's just being made out as passable, which I think is unfair.
While I adored S1, the reason why I've bailed on S2 is that the story/crime wasn't grabbing me at all.
We go from an extremely interesting serial killer to city corruption.
Also, MM's and WH's characters were a lot more interesting from Day 1 in S1.

Colin Ferrel's character was the only one I found entertaining from E1. From Rachel McAdams to the closet-homosexual to Vince Vaughn, there wasn't one other character I found even remotely interesting through the first 2.5 episodes.
Saying that, even though I bailed half-way thru E3 but I may have to re-engage based on this epic shootout I'm reading about.

That wasn't really my hook for season one. It was Matthew-Woody to start, and the characters they developed to finish. They gave them the heavy lifting and they handled the load easily. The serial killer never made it close to Hannibal Lecter status. And remember, season one was criticized for how the dots were connected to thwart the mad killer.

To be honest I'm surprised you bailed in the first place, but that shootout revitalized the series going forward. (IMO)

e action was good, but the fact that they were the only one's to survive made it a bit of a fantasy moment.

And I agree what took so long for backup. The swat team should have been rushing down there. They were facing an arsenal of automatic weapons with pea shooters.

It's a good season so far, but they have a lot left to do in only 6 episodes to make this an engaging story.

VV is doing a great job of acting in this one, but he's small time and thinks he's big time. That in itself might be the main theme of this season. His shakedowns of his small time bosses who have already paid him is a bit humorous and will seemingly find him face down in the gutter before too long. He's petty, small time, doesn't have many allies, and I'd be surprised if anyone would miss him if he got waxed.

But that's the great thing about True Detective. It's just a story about certain people, just like season 1. There may or may not be some bigger story that unfolds, but you get to learn about some characters and see some crazy stuff that goes on behind the scenes as people play out their roles.

Good point, but that might make the bond even stronger. It's almost like the three have a destiny.

Yeah, none of these characters are gonna get killed until the final episode, if that. This ain't TWD!

I think this will wake them up from their personal demons. Everyone had a different reaction to the final carnage: Ani freaking out about how it'll look, Paul (that's his name right?) cool as a cucumber, and Ray like WTF just happened.

There's so many loose ends that I don't know where the twist will come from. Will VV's minions rebel on him or sell him out, Ray's wrapped up with him, Ani's father and his possible involvement, and of course Paul and his battle with his sexuality and PTSD.

I think they've built a compelling story. It just doesn't have the same kind of mystery element to it that S1 had, because that was almost supernatural. This is more a straight up corruption scheme that needs to be unraveled and you don't know who's in whose pocket. A more traditional storyline.

The shootout definitely wasn't realistic, but it sure was exciting. People getting capped left and right.

It'll be interesting to see where they take the story from here. You can't really continue an investigation after the 3 main cops incite a massacre. At least not without losing all plausibility.

                  Re: True Detective (Season Two)

I get the impression that the Vinci PD and the mayor were setting them up with that shootout.

The lieutenant asking if that much manpower is really necessary, the mayor saying "let's be careful out there" with an almost sarcastic tone.

Plus, you know the guy they were trying to bring in isn't actually behind Caspere's murder or the disappearance of Frank's money.

Also, the one detective who was Ray's regular partner and got domed in the beginning of the shootout, he had been following and taking pictures of Paul, and maybe the others, so I figure that's got to come into play at some point.

The Vinci higher ups want as much dirt and info on everyone as possible so they can squeeze them out of the investigation, and it's already started with Ani.

I definitely think it was a setup of some sort.

I don't know if it was the 2nd or 3rd episode but they had told Valcoro to lead them to pin it on the pimp, who was the guy they were after when the shootout occurred.

                    Should be interesting.

I'd be surprised if the mayor didn't set it up. He had it in for Ani ever since Paul and her came to his house.

I thought this week was very ho hum, and downright excruciating whenever Frank and his girlfriend talked to each other. Their dialogue was never very good, but it just sunk to a new low.

Interesting that Ray's strategy for getting his kid back was to quit the police force and now work full time for "Gangster Frank". Didn't seem like a great move until we find out the law enforcement "powers that be" will get his kid back for him if he plays ball with the police force he just quit.

Not sure what will be reaped from the knowledge that the now dead Teague Dixon (Dan Dority) was snooping around about the diamonds well before anybody on the team knew about them.

Of course the big reveal is that Frank gave Ray the wrong guy to kill, because they captured Velcoro's wife's real rapist.

Quite possibly the best episode this season. Think everything is building to come to a head in the final episode. Crazy how we went from virtually having no clue about anything to suspecting pretty much everyone.

I agree though, I couldn't care less about Frank's wife and their struggle to have children. Arbitrary filler at this point. They didn't build her character enough to make me care.

This wasn't his strategy. He was essentially forced out of the force due to the backlash from the huge shootout.
