    Re: ESPN Cleaning House

Not related to ESPN, but I just learned that Nate Burleson will no longer be a regular with Kay Adams, Peter Schrager, and Kyle Brandt on Good Morning Football. I believe he's taking a job with another network (CBS, maybe?).

It's funny, because although their chemistry works so well and is the best part of that program, I always asked myself: "Who do I think would be the first to leave the core four if I had to choose one?" and that answer was always Nate. I think Peter had the most connections to other networks prior to this, but he was always handling corresponding both just fine so I imagined he would always stay on... and Kyle and Amy are just football diehards but don't have the pull that the others do, so I figured the ex-NFL star would have greener pastures to take away from his position there.

It's a shame, because the weekend crew isn't as fun to me and I think they borrow from there every so often with the fourth person. It will be that less compelling of a show without Nate.

I don't watch First Take, but yeah, Max doesn't get (or isn't willing to play) the *wink wink* nature of the show. So it is what it is.

Aw man, I didn’t know this! I love all 4 of them, I think it’s a sum of the parts deal. But each can and does stand on their own, and even on the show Brandt and Schraeger have always joked that Burleson is the big fish in a little pond. He’s been on CBS for 2-3 years now I think, got tapped for the Nickelodeon crossover, and generally just a rising star. Not surprised but sad to see. I agree the backup GMFB crew and rotating guests aren’t as good, and sometimes seems like they’re trying too hard to be cool on the cool show, but there’s no one I can’t stand like other networks. They aren’t blowhard edgelords like what ESPN and FS1 runs out there every day.

Schraeger seems more to be in to reporting along with his FOX sideline/studio work and Kyle has made a rep for himself with some fun montages and segments with his insane energy, and also is building up a popular podcast on The Ringer. I think Schraeger has a podcast too, with Sean McVay? Kay seems to be more of a host-type no matter the subject — I don’t know what else she does.

I am a massive GMFB fan. Every day. They are absolutely hilarious to me, it actually can get a bit raunchy if you catch the references. They get goofy but also deliver great, personable interviews and information and news.

I know that ratings and advertisers mean everything for these networks, but it seems Stephen A. is almost going to run the whole place. It's scary enough when you see him on ESPN and ESPN 2 at the same time but with different shots.

ESPN = "Everywhere Stephen's Present Network."

Now I do happen to like Colleen Wolfe, but it's more because she reminds me exactly of one of my sister's friends (and someone I used to coach in softball) so there's that "familiarity" thing that got me to grow with her. But yeah as slickdtc said, it's a "sum of its parts" kind of thing. I like Kay with the others, and I'd like it to stay that way.

I guess if Nate can find his way back on and make guest appearances still he will continue to do so, but they'll probably either go down to three people or try and get a permanent fourth. Maybe do the guest host rotation? Not sure as I'm not really reading the news on it. I don't know when Nate's official departure is. Perhaps when the season starts.

Idk but in this day and age, nobody is making $12 Mil a year on TV for being quiet, especially on Sports TV.

And you damn sure aren’t making that if plenty of people aren’t talking about you, good or bad. There’s a reason why he and Skip are getting paid crazy money.

No one is arguing how he goes about making that money, but it's interesting that that many people watch it.

Or more so, it's interesting that you have so many different versions of the same exact kind of programming (hot takes on the NFL and NBA) and it's all completely eaten up.

ESPN has gone away from the highlight show formula of SportsCenter where they'd cover as many games as possible, probably because of the other specialized networks I'm sure... but their television side has really removed MLB (save some games they air) and NHL with Barry Melrose lol, as they just do two sports (with college mixed in) and specialize in one thing.

I'm looking at my TV guide, and here is what airs on ESPN tomorrow not named SportsCenter or a live event:

                      - Get Up
                      - First Take
                      - Jalen & Jacoby
                      - Highly Questionable
                      - Around the Horn
                      - Pardon the Interruption (the OG)

Every single one of them are just hot-take talking heads. Highlight shows, interview/documentary programs, and their specialized sports shows almost become lost in the shuffle (is Baseball Tonight even a thing anymore?). I also laughed so hard when I saw their new sports ticker and left frame on ESPN 2 or something take up all but like 30% of the screen. It's just not fun to absorb is all.

I'll enjoy PTI because not only was it the original, but they also cover every sport, they keep on their time limits, you pretty much know their entire half-hour schedule ahead of time, they remain focused on the content with less bias and more statistics, it lacks any gimmicks (such as the scoring of ATH), and they have likable long-term hosts who have fantastic chemistry with one another.

The real problem is the culture it's brought about everywhere else, though. Everything nowadays needs to be a hot take. It's less about the analysis and more about the actual names on screen. You'll watch them yell at each other and it's twelve million dollar entertainment.

And I could almost forgive all of this, every single thing... if they were actually good at what they do, and held themselves accountable when they were beyond wrong on a consistent basis. I think some people are brought on there to literally look dumb, and that's probably obvious to others but it's a shock to me that I see it all the time. Some of them are simply not good at what they do. They don't do their homework, they don't look at the numbers, and they are stubborn to their notions regardless of the day or moment. This is entertainment that people watch though apparently, and ESPN has become a mockery of itself in the process as a result of it.

SIDE NOTE #1: For the record, ESPN Radio seems to be okay in my book. Not my go-to, but it's a different audience so they have different programming (including MLB stuff). Far from dreadful in comparison.

SIDE NOTE #2: I think Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe work well together in Undisputed if you're willing to watch those personalities, and although I've never personally seen the show I watched their clips on YouTube when they would talk about Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers.

                        (^FWIW, I was answering dickey’s question).

But yeah, it’s a Product of our current society and all they’re doing is giving the people what they want to see the most. And considering how social media is and how much of an impact that plays(Y’all got Twitter and let’s be real, it’s nothing but people giving off snarky/smartest person in the room vibes and somehow call that “educating the masses)it shouldn’t be any surprise to see certain shows/people get all the attention.

It’s about being the loudest, snarkiest/smarkiest, most wrong, say anything without any context/nuance to an argument/discussion.

I don’t watch any of those shows on ESPN, I don’t care for GMFB in that it’s no different than what was on ESPN except they don’t try to be loud and wrong. I also think the people on there come off as “try hards” as far as trying to be cool. It’s forced and it comes off as corny/fake to me.

You're not wrong. It's not quite a "chicken or egg" story regarding which came first, but ESPN is helping feed a perpetual loop of "We live in a Twitter world so we will embrace that culture, and in turn we will feed and let thrive more people into that environment." I don't blame that the specialized sports networks took away what they one were and it may have forced their hand, but they could have tried otherwise. As I edited in my post, ESPN Radio seems to do pretty okay in comparison.

I don’t watch any of those shows on ESPN, I don’t care for GMFB in that it’s no different than what was on ESPN except they don’t try to be loud and wrong. GMFB is something nice to wake up to. I think of those four as my buddies when I watch them. I don't like when they're not talking about football (like when a celebrity "wakes up" with them coming into studio) and I don't last more than twenty minutes watching in my morning routine anyway, but if need be I can easily have it on in the background for all three hours and I enjoy their company. They have a unique way of lasting hundreds of episodes during the calendar year for a few hours per day and not being overly stale even with little content to go off of. Their sell job for me though is the chemistry of the four that were there for a long time, and without Nate there will be a slight void.
