If you guys loved TV highlights as much you claim, they'd still air them. They don't air them because people don't watch them. Social media has rendered them obsolete.

I legit think this is a chicken/egg scenario.

Did people stop watching highlights long ago, causing ESPN to change the way they do them? Or did ESPN change the way they do highlights, causing people to stop watching them?

A perfect example of terrible highlights was from earlier this week where the Wizards/Celtics game went to OT and Thomas scored 50+.

If you watched Sportscenter and ESPN, you would have ZERO idea that the Wizards had multiple chances to win in regulation and even had TWO shots at the end of regulation to try and win.

Instead it was 15 seconds of Thomas in regulation, then Thomas dominating in OT.

I tried hard in my time at ESPN to try and tell a story, but you get a limit into how much time you have now to tell that story.

I watch Quick Pitch on MLB-Network each night.

For some reason, ESPN thinks people like and want to hear a ton of debate shows and banter. I don't understand what's wrong with a simple highlight show. It does seem, lately at least, that at 11pm EST they have an old-school feel to SportsCenter.

            Re: ESPN Cleaning House

Highlights on TV are still *way* better than fumbling around on the internet with my computer or phone. Quick Pitch rules. Sure, you can get an individual highlight but there's barely ever a good video package prepared showing context and progression of a game outside of what's on the nightly recap shows. Much like "cordcutting," there's still no substitute for the real thing.

Five minutes into watching extra innings for tonight's Yankees/Cubs game I felt like blowing my brains out because of the announcing crew and the way ESPN was covering the game. It was horrendous. We don't watch ESPN anymore because they've blown for a long, long time. Maybe people started finding their nightly highlights elsewhere like me with MLB Network and Quick Pitch or NHL Network and On The Fly because they were sick of the way ESPN was doing that ****.

I absolutely hate the Sunday Night baseball night crew now!
I cant stand Aaron Boone's color commentary and I don't need a hot female ex softball player commenting on MLB. Sorry I just cant stand what it has become.
I love Kruk, he was entertaining, the crew now is just too dry.
And don't go there, I am not being sexist with Mendoza, hell I love Doris Burke covering the NBA. And the reason I like her is she knows what she is talking about.

I'm not "going there", but have you actually listened to any of Jessica Mendoza's analysis?

Different strokes I guess, but I think she's incredibly good. She knows what she's talking about and discusses analytics in a way that makes it easy to follow.

                  Re: ESPN Cleaning House

I'm biased but I think Dan Shulman is a top drawer PBP guy. He has stated that the style of SNB in terms of their production is not his preferred route. He did a Sportsnet podcast a year or so ago when he first re-joined the Blue Jays on a part time basis and there was a LOONG conversation about it. Basically ESPN's production for SNB encourages bullet point notes on star players, talking about the rest of the league and general stories within the past week and using the time slot as a venue to do what ostensibly shows like Baseball Tonight used to do back in the day with a general overview of the league. Shulman has also stated that through the years he's wanted to see more variety on SNB. In fact, he has said that he prefers doing games with some of the lesser known teams nationally and tries to prop them up when they do have those matchups which has given him a bit of a reputation for sucking up to teams like the Pirates in social media circles. If you guys ever get a chance to check out a Sportsnet broadcast game with Dan and Buck Martinez you'll see his natural style is MUCH better and is in fact, pretty damn old school.

Aaron Boone is pretty weak as a color guy IMO and doesn't really give TOO much insight other than the typical "ex jock" relating his experiences as it pertains to any given situation. Jessica Mendoza however is EXCELLENT. It's a shame that by virtue of being a female she doesn't get very much love from most people but if you actually listen to her she explains the mechanics of hitting and other aspects of the game very well. I hope that ESPN continues to have her in the SNB booth.

I have tried to listen to her, she just seems to always be giggling to me.

I've always wondered when did becoming loud AND having a personality become popular with people? IE the Screamin' A's, Skip Bayless', Colin Cowherd's of the world? Or anyone like those types.

Better question is why did it become popular with people?

I want to think it all started with Jim Rome.

Count me among those who are giving Jessica Mendoza a fair shot. Yes, she's not an ex-baseball player, but she also seems to do her homework and isn't annoying. Hell, compare her with the other ESPN "talent" out there and I don't really see who would be any better. It could always be worse--we could have the TBS crew from last year's playoffs! *shudders*

I wonder the same thing. It amazes me that Chris Russo has a TV show. I can't even watch commercials of him on MLB Network without shuddering from his voice.
