When did artists get too much power? They have almost no power.

I think they have more leeway than they had in the 1990s and early 2000s, given the boom of the internet, but by and large I get the impression that record labels and producers are still largely in control on things.

            I think Recovery kills MMLP.

True about Jay-Z...but so did a lot of artist.

Agree about Busta Rhymes, especially since his "rebirth"

As for the second statement, I liked MJ between the 78-82 years when he had a more conventional R&B style to him.
A lot of people feel like Elvis stole R&B from the originators...but he was actually a very good singer.

I liked MJ from 1969 (first Jackson 5 album) to 1988 (Bad). Everything from Dangerous on was hit or miss.

My brother currently works for EMI and worked for Sony for 8years in A&R. He told me artists with name especially when associated with producers of the same pedigree, pretty much go and come as they would like , they put out garbage after a single and demand up front money usually without a plan of action. Spend it on crew and overly expensive videos. They have power by holding labels hostage for their services for advances.

That's one percent of all the artists out there. Of course someone with a name is able to have more control over what they do, the problem is that there are very few artists with that kind of clout and there is certainly not enough of them to ruin the music industry. The labels are the one who have messed up the industry.

Jay i think benefited more than anyone, I know Rule, DMX got alot of play too, but I think he stepped in and really put himself out there vs the homie role I think he would have had if Big didn't die

I think Recovery is alot like MMLP i wish he would have gone that route earlier than some of the others.

You'll be surprised one of the guys my brother was telling me about was Bobby V . I believe what i call the hook up era 2002-2009 really did it in. Alot of artist putting their friends on who had no talent .

Random one I thought of after hearing a mix with Katy Perry's chorus:

Katy Perry is the best female popstar. Now, not the most talented (I'd say probably Christina) nor do I think she'll be Madona successful...

..but she's the best I've ever heard because I can actually listen to her popular songs at parties and not want to kill myself or whomever put them on at the party.

                          I wholeheartedly disagree.

While we're talking popular female singers (or in this case bands with female leads)...

I kind of don't hate Sugarland. It's country, but damn is it catchy. I don't have any of their CD's or anything, but I don't hate life when they come on the radio at a restaurant or store or something.

I think the mark of a great song is if you can listen to just the instrumental of the song and it's still enjoyable. If the song still sounds awesome sans vocals, you have yourself a great song. If the song is dry, boring, and redundant, unless it's meant to be 90% vocalist (Which is fine for certain types of songs) it stands out as being a mediocre to average song.
I agree for the most part. I think the sign of a real great artist is somebody who can sound great just acapella, with no beat/instrumental. I've heard guys that have so much emotion and such a nice delivery in their lyrics, that the acapella sounds great.

And the screaming really doesn't sound bad at all if you listen to it for a while.
That last sentence is spot on. I used to despise the screaming a long time ago, but I took the time to listen to it more and realized that I really like it. Most of what I listen to as far as the screaming goes is metalcore, bands like August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage and the like.

August Burns Red is IMO one of the most talented bands instrumentally out there, Matt Greiner(drummer) is probably the most underrated drummer ever. Sadly most people only choose to hear screaming and pass it off as just noise and don't give a chance.
I'm not saying anyone has to like it, but give it a few listens before passing judgment.
