I'd personally go SSLP, Recovery and the MMLP.

But you can't go wrong with any of them, unless you mentioned Encore with those, and in which case you would be wrong

Pretty much. Recovery/MMLP, then Eminem Show/SSLP, then Relapse/Encore are the three tiers, IMO, for his major one. You can put his REAL first CD in tier 2b, or so, for me.

I don't know man. I think The Eminem Show has to be in the discussion for his best. From top to bottom it was solid as hell.

Not saying the others aren't, and Recovery is also one of my favorite albums ever, but I'm gonna have to go through and listen to all of these albums again, just so I'm not forgetting anything.

Going off of memory though, I think I prefer TES over all of them.

I just re-looked at The Eminem Show's tracklist and you might have a very valid argument. There is a solid showing on that with Solider, Till I Collapse, Cleaning Out My Closet, Square Dance, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, Sing for the Moment, Superman, When the Music Stops and then depending on how you feel about them (I'm a fan) Hailie's Song and My Dads Gone Crazy.

          Hm.

I guess that changes up the pecking order for me but I do know that Til I Collapse is a MUST play if you are trying to get hyped up before a game you're about to play or if you're about to workout.

There are plenty of great artists out there who know how to put the pieces together perfectly, but if you break down their stuff its relatively ordinary.
For someone who is rock heavy in terms of my listening tastes, I feel the instrumental is what sets it apart. There are so many songs even in rock now (A lot more in pop/hip hop) where the instrumental is just the same thing looping every 10 seconds for an entire song.

That ruins the song for me quite often unless the vocalist is REALLY GOOD. And there aren't many vocalists in rock in my opinion where 90% of the song is the voice and it works.

Then again, for ME (this is me personally) I feel the instrumental of a song sets the mood and tone of a song more than the vocals. I would much rather listen to a great band without vocals than listen to a solo acoustic an average. (I realize, I'm in the minority on this one) I would much rather listen to a movie score than any pop song.

I usually look as vocals as to how they serve from an instrumental purpose, how they mesh with the backing in terms of range, pace, etc. Once again, I know I'm in the minority with that, since a lot of people put the content of the lyrics as #1 far and away. Not that it isn't important, but if the instrumental is great, I can listen to a bunch of la's.

I don't care if the words are groundbreaking, if it's a part of an autotuned or redundant song, it instantly ruins it for me. This is part of the reason I listen to very little pop/hip hop or country. Because the backing is very bland and boring. For me, if the instrumental is weak, unless the vocalist is EXCELLENT (which can happen, of course) than I'm not interested.

Once again, saying this again before someone probably freaks out on me, this is MY opinion, I know I'm in the minority here.

I had actually forgotten about The Eminem Show as well, or at least the quality of it.

Til I Collapse is still probably my favorite Eminem song. It gets me in the mood to do just about anything I need to.

Encore was such a hit or miss album. Mosh is one of my all time favorite songs, Like Toy Soldiers is phenomenal, and Puke is another good one, but the rest of the album is pretty much garbage compared to his other stuff. I'd rank them:

                  1. Marshall Mathers LP
                  2. Recovery
                  3. The Eminem Show
                  4. Slim Shady LP
                  5. Encore
                  6. Relapse

I do agree with this in the fact that there are probably three or four songs on there that I can listen to and do like. It's the same as Relapse, for me, because again there are four songs or so on that album I like.

The rest of those two albums being garbage, though, brings the overall quality down. Even the songs I don't like on MMLP/TES/Recovery/SSLP I can still listen to.

My favorite has always been The Slim Shady LP, but that's probably because I listened to it for 3 straight years from 6th-8th grade. More nostalgia than anything.

Slim Shady LP is another hit or miss album, but there's a lot more hits than Encore had. The only reason I rank it above Relapse is that Mosh ****s all over anything on Relapse and Like Toy Soldiers is better than every song but Beautiful.

I don't care how "hardcore they are". I don't even care if they live what they rap about. Nas was a storyteller who reinvented himself time and again. He didn't live half of what he wrote. He's still my second favorite rapper and arguably the greatest to do it.

Pac was one of the greatest actors I've ever seen. The fake most of the time. Dude was a dancer, an actor, a poet and not nearly as hard as he tried to be. Pac was the quintessential good boy trying to be bad, creating controversy just for the hell of it. I was never a fan, but he's another example of a legend from back in the day bringing the fake.

The Game is an example of someone today who is fake as hell, but I love the guy's music. I don't care if he lives what he writes, the guy makes good music. Keeping it real or not.

Finally, for every Rakim, you have a Lupe. For every Soulja you have a Vanilla Ice. There is great music today and there was crappy music back then, so the "back in the day" argument just sounds like a bunch of bitterness to me, which sucks because with a name like Illmatic I automatically want to agree with you (and BnG, who is a poster I respect on here a hell of a lot). One thing I can say is the overall quality was probably better then, but there is still so much good music in the genre today. To me, the keeping it real aspect of it has little to do with it though.

I guess that's the point of this thread though. To disagree.
First off, thanks man. Appreciate it, especially since I respect you just as much.

Anyways, you both bring up good points. For the most part, as long as you make good music, I don't care if you're real or fake. I'm a big Game fan as well, so I know what you mean.

I do feel there is a difference when it comes to Nas when using him in a comparison about the real/fake artists. He's never been one to pretend he was something he's not.

The difference between someone like him and Rick Ross is that Nas tells stories about things he may or may not have experienced, but Ross straight up lied about who he really was with that whole correctional officer mess or whatever it was and that's a bit off-putting. I'll still listen to his music regardless (can't say I listen to much of him though since I'm not really a fan), but that situation just didn't look good on him.
