The problem with this sentiment is that it has no logical endpoint. When I purchased my Xbox, the drive was capable of playing and ripping CD's. I already had a dedicated CD player, and I could use my PC for ripping. Why did I pay Microsoft for this! The XBox could play DVDs, I already have a DVD player. Why did I pay Microsoft for this! PLently of people bough an Xbox with either A) no broadband available to them or B) Had broadband, but just werent interested in XBox Live. Why were they "forced" to pay for the inclusion of an ethernet port? The XBox was capable of on-board Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, but my a/v receiver already had that capability! My HDTV has 3:2 Pulldown capability, but so does my DVD player! Why did I have to pay for the incorporation of it on both, I only need ONE to do it! And on and on....

Unless we move into an era of consumer electronics where everything is custom-built like a Dell PC, this is the way it is, and things will be made for the maximum amount of users for the max profit. As it stands MOST people don't have DVRs, or blu-ray/SACD players, or memory card readers, so those things are built in. If you already have it, don't buy a PS3(that's why I won't be at least for a LONG while).
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Another great post. Seriously he just pretty much countered everything that was said about the PS3 having features that you guys don't want because you have it already. Great point.

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games & more discussion...

Does anyone know what type of software is going to be running on the PS3 to control the DVR functionality? In other words, does it have TIVO or are they using a homegrown interface?

That's key. Anyone who's used an older cable company DVR knows that without a good feature set, the DVR is near useless (newer software revisions are pretty good). Not to mention dual tuner support is key so that one can watch one program WHILE recording another. Without a dual tuner, this isn't possible.

With that said, the HD DVR I have is more than anything the PS3 will offer. I understand both sides of the debate. However, personally, I already have all these multimedia things that the PS3 will offer so the console isn't for me.

I'm on the other side. I don't have a DVR/Tivo or anything new for that matter. If the PS3 offers that and is still at a REASONABLE price than i'll be very happy. If it's too expensiv meaning anything over 600 then I won't get it. 600 is pushing it also. I would prefer 2 SKUs so that if the one with all those features is expensive than I can get the other one. Otherwise I will have to purchase the 360.

Another good post. Yeah, that's what I'm sayin. If you don't want what it offers, don't waste your money and get one. Stop complaining already and buy another system. Funny how people keep bringing this up.

i agree with you to a certain extent.

however, its not as simple as you put it. It does not cost alot of money to put an ethernet into a gaming system. it does not cost alot (if any) to make an xbox or playstation play a dvd or a cd, because those drives are designed to read data off game disc (dvd's) so its really not a problem at all.

But when you add in something like DVR, or Blu-Ray, thats where you can see people getting upset over paying for something they dont need.

Blu-Ray wasn't put in for fun, it has a purpose, it's going to be used for games, is it Sony's fault for making their console future-proof and the best and best for gamers? Nope, they're making it better for us gamers by giving us WAY better games on Blu-Ray discs, I dont see a problem with that, and PS3 will be just as much as 360, $399, economics comes to mind, if you've taken that, then you know they CANNOT price it over the competition, in this case, pcbox1.5. And Blu-Ray is better for another reason too, we need it in the PS3, would you buy a $1000 Blu-Ray player when movies are going to be released only on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray or when only on Blu-Ray or it dominates the market?, nope, you have your PS3 to watch them and can wait for the price to drop, along with playing true HD games and the most impressive, also really great since they have the space on Blu-Ray for them, they have the double-layered 54GB, sinlge-layered 27GB or even quadruple-layered 100GB ones that TDK showed off at CES.

                      what?

Ps3 is def on my radar. But when it comes down to it, its all about the $$$. If the ps3 comes out at $600 with all those bells and whistles (which drives the price up to $600), then i will simply have to pass. Sony better be thinking about 2 skus, otherwise I think they will lose several customers who are happy with their 360 (me being one of them)

If it's too expensiv meaning anything over 600 then I won't get it. 600 is pushing it also. I would prefer 2 SKUs so that if the one with all those features is expensive than I can get the other one. Otherwise I will have to purchase the 360.
I can see why you wouldn't mind it having the DVR, I have one that my cable company gives me for free, so the DVR thing would have no use from me. Also you make it sound like puchasing a 360 is a bad thing, if the PS3 is to much money for you in the end, why buy the 360 if it's only what you can afford, buy it because you want it. I wouldn't just buy a console if never wanted it and it's the only thing I can afford. Anyway different strokes for different folks.

I bet people who are happy with there 360 won't even bothering buying the PS3, I mean if it's $600 dollars, your talking about spending over $1000 for two systems, and games aren't cheap anymore either. So having to next-gen systems would be nice, but for the price in the end that it will be to keeping two console fresh will be steep, you have to keep that in the back of your mind.

OK... If the majority of people with PS2 will HATE (or will just straight refuse) to pay for an online service (measly $5 a month) what in Heaven's name makes you think they'll pay for a PS3 that $200-300 more than it's competition. That's a big gap.

I refuse to believe PS3 will be priced at more than $500. That's just plain stupid. Unless it f*cking blows 360 out of the damn water, it's not going to be priced much more than 360.

that's still too much for what i'll pay at launch. If it's more than the 399 that i paid for my 360, i'll wait for the first price drop.
