Bioshock scores 10/10 from AP Mag

.“A Perfect Score: That’s what Bioshock deserves as it is one of the most original, haunting and memorable shooters to come along since Half Life. Bioshock brings the action 20,000 leagues under the sea to Rapture, a city built on the bottom of the ocean floor by an utopian genius with a thing for art deco.”

But by the time you arrive, the city is a doomed dystopia populated by mutated freaks, gene-harvesting little girls and hulking behemoths donning gonzo diving gear who can run you through with one punch. The real point of interest is the look of Rapture, though. Where most shooters take place in warehouses, slimy caves or alien ships, Rapture, though tattered and falling apart, is filled with lush, ’50s retro architecture and appointments. The game is also an RPG masquerading as a shooter, letting you upgrade everything from your weapons to, well, yourself. Just play it, you’ll see.

            BioShock: Garry Schyman Interview

Recently we picked the creative mind of the man behind the musical score of Irrational Games' BioShock, reknowned composer Garry Schyman
Once it was all said and done, what were your thoughts after you had the chance to see it all in action? Did it live up to your initial expectations?

Garry Schyman: Yes! The game is amazing. Truly beautiful and scary and challenging in a way that I expect will influence how games are made for a long time. I feel confident that the music will hold its own and perhaps will show that game scores do not need to be generic, that composers, when appropriate, should be allowed to experiment and really create something unique and different. I am not saying that is appropriate for all games, but when the game calls for it – let’s push the envelope and be innovative. I was lucky to have a project that permitted that.

Dropped a Jackson to pre-order the game today. I only hope it lives up to the hype...

BioShock Surprise announcement in new trailer

While it seems to me there have been no end of BioShock trailers like this one or this one or this one, 2K Games has one last trailer for their spooky underwater adventure in store for us. The catch? We have to tune in to Spike TV on the night of Sunday the 12th to see it. All I can say is this had better be a damn fine piece of video game commercial film for me to want to take time out of my busy Sunday schedule of sitting around on my *** to flip the channel to Spike at 9PM Eastern to watch for 60 seconds. They'd need something like a surprise announcement from Game Head's Geoff Keighley for that to happen.

Graphics: Looks like an art-deco city under the water should
Sound: Atmospheric, from the old-fashioned soundtrack to the superb dialogue
Multiplayer: None - you're all alone down there

                              The Good:
                              • Captivating, well-told story

                              • Emergent combat allows for huge variation in tactics
                              • The soundtrack, the locations, the visuals
                              • The many, many Plasmids and the brilliant final levels

                              The Bad:
                              • At one point it ends

"BioShock is an expertly crafted game in every respect, a truly worthy successor to what's considered one of the PC's greatest games, and a game that, we feel, will be a milestone in PC gaming. Never has the medium been used as a storytelling device in such a beautiful and engaging way, and never have we been drawn so deeply into a gameworld. Long live Rapture."

                              Overall Score: 96/100

Its going to be very interesting to see how this game does sales wise. It seems clear that its going to garner a lot of critical acclaim, but will it do well with the majority of the shooter fans.

I know I'm making a sweeping generalization here, but its seems that a lot shooter fans don't care about games with complex story lines and moral ambiguities.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.
