With the analogy you just used, than since the XBOX 360 didn't come out with the HD-DVD drive like it was supposed to originally, the PS3 will trounce this system into the ground like it did with the Dreamcast.

I'm sorry, but people didn't buy the PS2 just for the DVD drive, it was an added bonus which ended up breaking on many people after they were watching movies.

Sony needs to convince people that this is a multimedia machine with the route they are taking, but in the end it may just hurt them since they are having some issues with Blu Ray in the PS3 at the moment.

No one trounces Microsoft, not Sony NOT Oracle, NO ONE! Microsoft is NOT SEGA. Many people bought the PS2 for the DVD drive, not to play games. This is why there are fewer PS2 games sold as a percentage of total PS2 sales compared to XBOX. Pirating is another reason why the game sales on PS2 are low relative to the hardware sales.

I think PS3 is going to bankrupt SNE Sony Corp in the long run. Sony is basing their success on Blue-Ray just like it did before with DVD's. Expect this time your 100% right, the avg consumer has no need for a blue-ray drive. I don't think any console generation is anywhere near the same situation as the next.

10 years from now its going to be a two horse race between Microsoft and Nintendo. With Microsoft controlling the USA and Europe and Nintendo controlling Japan.

This isn't a anti Sony rant, Sony is doing everything wrong from a business standpoint. It's very much like the USA vs. Russia during the cold war, where Russia doesnt have the resources to keep up with the USA over the long haul.

PS3 will be on show at E3. If they cant have their playable systems, they can still have 30 CGI videos that they claim as gameplay, and everyone will get all fired up. Even is Sony is planning a delay right now, they will not announce til way later in the year. It's PR101.

I think PS3 is going to bankrupt SNE Sony Corp in the long run. Sony is basing their success on Blue-Ray just like it did before with DVD's. Expect this time your 100% right, the avg consumer has no need for a blue-ray drive. I don't think any console generation is anywhere near the same situation as the next.

This isn't a anti Sony rant, Sony is doing everything wrong from a business standpoint. It's very much like the USA vs. Russia during the cold war, where Russia doesnt have the resources to keep up with the USA over the long haul.

I never said MS was getting trounced, I was using an analogy off of USF's. I think people bought it as a gaming machine + dvd player imo.

I disagree. Sony has many companies backing them with the Blu-ray technology. Fox, Disney, and others are going to start putting movies on Blu-ray discs only.

The PS3 and blu-ray will actually help Sony get back into the fight with Microsoft.

The problem for Sony is that in the not too distant future increases in broadband and cheaper memory are going to allow people to download HD movies and content which will make the storage format obselete. They have a very short time window to make money with Blu Ray. Blu Ray will compete against DVD and HD-DVD and most people do not even have HDTVs with HDMI.

There is no way the avg mom and pop will buy a $30-40 disc when DVD's sell for $9-15. VHS lasted nearly 20 years and DVD hasn't even been around 10. Blue-Ray & HD-DVD are both destined to flop. Streaming media is the future, until then DVD will do just fine.

It is so hard to tell what will happen because there is no clear cut winner out of the gate. When DVD came out it wa sa huge leap over VHS. I don't see the same kind of mainstream excitement with HD-DVD and Bluer-Ray. As long as the PS3 doesn't top the $500 mark it should do fine. People just put out $400 for the 360 and if Sony markets it correctly the extra $100 wont be as big of a deal. The only thing I no for certain is that there is no way Sony will put MS out of the console business or vice-versa. The only thing that might happen is Sony putting itself out of business by doing something really crazy (that loon who works for Sony saying that they want to make an expensive machine that people will want to work more hours for comes to mind).

What about SACD (super audio CD)? How is that fairing? I don't think the whole HD-DVD Blu-Ray thing will be filed right along with SACD. There are SACDs available but people don't really care for the increased quality and fidelity as CDs and downloaded music has taken over.

I predict the same will happen with this silly HD format war.

Blu-ray will do the same to DVD that DVD did to VHS. It will make it obsolete.

You don't have to worry about the average mom because there are enough teenagers, college students, and people that have to have the latest technology to help blu-ray survive. It will be the same as TIVO and satelite TV, High definition televisions, etc....
