I agree with CB on the time frame, a $500 system would be good as well although Sony will take an a$$ whoopin on that price. Me thinks $599 with a HDD included or $499 without a HDD.

Hey Flawless, I know you keep up with the latest news...

I've read on GAF rumors that the PS3's OS will take up a ton of RAM, and that while this opens up the possibility of great home PC functions, it also means there may be less RAM available for games. I've read speculation that the PS3 games may take a slight textures hit in comparison. Is that possible? With all the hype surrounding the PS3, I can't imagine that mult-platform games may actually look better on the 360.

You seem to be pretty objective...any thoughts or solid intel?

It's not a rumor. The PS3 currently uses 64MB of main memory, 32MB of video memory, one SPE, and 5% of the main core. There is a rumor that it may take another SPE, which would leave 5 SPE's for game applications. That's quite a bit of resources reserved for the OS, compared to what the 360 OS footprint is - 32MB of memory and 5% of 2 of the 3 cores.

Blimblim (who runs Xboxyde and Playsyde) said from who he's talk to this will be shrinking with each new version of the OS until launch. This makes sense, but how much will it shrink?

I think Sony may have did this to give them some headroom, until they decide what exactly they plan to add. Some cool features may come out of this, so we'll just have to wait and see. Microsoft has more resources set aside for the OS, than it currently takes up, so look for possibly some cool features to be added down the road too (as Allard hinted at awhile back).

I'm not sure, if multi-platform games will look better on the 360 or not. It's possible that they may, but ultimately I think the difference in RAM between the two will just force developers to be a little more efficient in their memory usage with the PS3.

Comments from a developer on B3D.

There's no such thing as 'enough' memory - you can always use more. There's lots of stuff living in main memory typically. There's the code itself and the working memory representing the current state of the game world. That's probably not going to be the largest chunk however. Then you have buffers for I/O (for disk reads, audio, networking, etc.), animation data (can get very large even though it's usually quite heavily compressed), world map data, collision geometry, physics state, working memory for AI (pathfinding etc.), the list goes on and on. Console games always end up having to squeeze things down to fit into the available memory. The more memory you have the less time you have to spend trying to squeeze everything to fit and the more time you can spend working on new features, fixing bugs or optimizing.

The less memory you have available, the more time you're going to spend addressing memory shortages and the less you're going to spend improving the game in more tangible ways. The relatively large chunk being reserved for the OS isn't the end of the world but you're not going to hear any developers say they wouldn't like to get some of it back.

Geez Flaw this is starting to sound like the PS2 all over again with regard to limited memory in the system which hurt the performance of the system.

Thanks alot man...sometimes following the GAF forum's constant spin-doctoring from fanboys of both sides makes it tough to get an accurate read. Props.

Call me crazy, but intrested has elavated for the PS3, the only reason is, I just haven't played my 360 at all latley, I just don't know what it is. I can't believe I going to say this, I own 7 games for the 360, and I have been really board with it.. My Girl even gets on me, she says you don't even play the 360 anymore..The last game I bought was MLB2k6, and I don't like it at all, played it for like 2 days, well I tried to play it. I'm just a little more interested in the PS3 more then I thought I would have been. Just thought I let this out.....LOL

welcome to the Anticipating the PS3 Club.

As for your 360 don't worry. I will venture to say that around July you will be all over the system once again. The reason, NCAA Football '07 on next gen.

A quick question, have you tried Tomb Raider or Battlefield 2 for the 360? They are both, excellent, excellent games.

Have you played Oblivion? Another great title.

had Oblivion and it didn't do much for me at all, Haven't tried TR or B2, at this point I hate playing ports, every game being released for thr 360 seems to be a port.

Football my friend, you hopping over to Sony now since you got the PSP coming. Wait till a month or two and you'll be back on the XBOX 360 loving it.

                    LOL

I feel different with the 360. I was kind of upset with the releases during December through February, but once March hit I was in lala land.

What is there on the ps3 to look forward to? Most of the games are going to be on both systems and no exclusives have been announced that make me excited about it.
