that is quite an ambitious statement CB and quite a bit premature to say the least. We still don't know which format will prevail in the HD stakes and you proclain Blu ray to destroy the DVD?

Granted Blu ray in PS3 will/should help advance the format but Hi def discs are nowhere near the technology curve of acceptance that DVDs were when PS2 was released.

The DVD had such a superior tech (and ease of use) compared to VHS and DVD was also out in mass by the time PS2 was released as the accepted format.

I think you may want to rethink that statement for another year or two. Not saying that it won't happen, just that at this point in time it is stil quite uncertain.

What I was saying is that USF said that the average mom will refuse to buy blu-ray because DVD's will be cheaper. When I made the statement about blu-ray making DVD's obsolete, I was talking about the original DVD format, not the format that MS is using in the 360. I really don't know if blu-ray will defeat the format MS uses currently, but I do think it has a better backing.

Sorry for the confusion. I was only trying to point out how college students and young adults, have to have the latest technology, which in this case will be blu-ray.

For example, in the scenario where a bottle falls off a table, hits a metal shovel, and then rolls onto a carpet, conventional sound processing would have the bottle make the same sounds regardless of the environment, or what it collides with. That same scenario on the PlayStation 3 might have the bottle make a metallic tink when it hits the shovel, and then create a muffled rolling sound as it travels across the carpet. If the room had its own sound variables, the bottles sound might get take on some echo if in a bathroom, or get slightly quieter if in a bedroom. Then you have to factor in on-the-fly surround encoding, which would make the bottle pan from front to back or side to side in your room, depending upon the way it rolled.

No, it shows HD-DVD is a better fit for Microsoft.

Look around and you'll see other PC centric companies like HP and Intel supporting HD-DVD and criticising Blu-Ray. The companies' complaints focus on security technologies and mechanisms that determine or otherwise restrict the way PCs can use the digital content stored on BRDs. For example, it may not be possible to stream HD content from BRDs across a digital network, whereas HD content on HD-DVDs can be streamed.

HD DVD won't be good enough. Not saying that Blu Ray will take off, but yeah.

I read this on a respected and resourceful site a couple weeks ago...

HD DVD was launched early. Yesterday, the first HD DVD players were being sold in Japan and a reader managed to grab one and two discs, and he was not pleased. I haven't managed to get any details yet as to which codec was used and if the disc was single layer or double layer, but 1080i content encoded with MPEG-2 to a single layer HD DVD would indeed be a disaster.. two times the space for 4 times the amount of pixels - you do the math.
