Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
someone said the new PSM says the system will launch for only 399.99...
More PS3 details emerge - $399 Pricetag says PSM
The latest issue of Playstation Magazine has revealed more details on the upcoming PS3, including the current hot topic, the price. Contrary to the opinion of other news organisations, PSM has named the PS3 has having quite a low price: $399 in the U.S., €322 in Europe and ¥45,965 in Japan. Sony announcing that it can offer the PS3 at a lower price than expected is because of the Blu-Ray partners co-op and backing of the Blu-Ray format will offset the costs of producing the PS3 and with 7 of the 8 major film studios backing Blu-Ray and only 1 studio backing HD-DVD and only 1 manufacturer of HD-DVD players the scene looks grim for the HD-DVD format.
Although not new information, the magazine also claims that the PS3's 60GB non-removable hard drive will come as standard. And for those who care about backward compatibility , PSM also revealed that PSX/PS1 and PS2 games will run on the PlayStation 3 in 720, 1080i and 1080p. The magazine also confirmed that all PS3 games will be in the Blu-ray format, and will have no region lockouts. Finally, PSM also mentioned that the launch line-up and final design of the PS3's controller will be released at the E3 gaming expo in May.
Sony Testing Playstation Online Payments with RBS
PSX Online
Playstation Online continues to take shape, with sources close to the Royal Bank of Scotland stating that the bank is working with Sony in the UK on trials of an online payment mechanism.
The deal was supposedly signed last week according to their source, with trials of the payment system due to start sometime around May, which should give them enough time to get most of the bugs out by September.
The payment system will be used for a wide range of transactions such as Xbox Live style arcade and retro game downloads, additional content purchases for PS3 titles, subscriptions for MMORPG titles, and even a pseudo in-game auction. Of course as with most news lately we will have to wait till E3 for the full details.
PS3 Progress Report - Hub and Backwards Compatibility Undergoes Fine-tuning
The plot thickens - and out comes the picture of Sony's next-gen console, PlayStation 3. The pieces of the PS3 puzzle are being put to its final slots with the tiles for its Network Platform and back-compatibility software almost in place.
Sony's UK studios are currently in Ant-mode as they burn the midnight oil developing the two things that can set the dream console at the pinnacle of the gaming market. So far, positive reports are leaking out (accidentally or deliberately, you be the judge) claiming that the technology behind the PlayStation Network Platform, currently codenamed "PlayStation HUB", is undergoing polishing, and is about to begin its system's tests next month. The said project is billed to be the core of the upcoming console.
Although Sony has earlier announced that PS3 will definitely support previous titles made for its predecessors, rumors still persisted doubting the company's ability to meet its promise (guess where the rumors came from). Well, too bad for them, despite some minor snags, another division of Sony UK - tasked to develop the said backwards compatibilty software - is making huge headways toward the project's completion.
According to them, a good number of PS2 titles are already playable on the PS3 prototype hardware, thus signifying that the complex trick of emulating the PS2's processors and systems is going on as planned. It better be, considering that the said console is scheduled for worldwide launching this coming November, even that doesn't sound too reassuring. Especially since this feature of the PlayStation series provides a great advantage over its equally innovative Xbox 360 counterpart. Nice, the console war is getting more and more heated and we love it. We know the Xbox 360 started the race very early with no next-gen competition, but how far ahead in the race does that really put them?
i dunno how reliable it is as the person didn't post any source so i'm taking it with a grain of salt until i hear otherwise... but if this is in fact true, it's definately a good look for consumers worrying about costs....http://www.myspace.com/phillthegenesis

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Where is this coming from? It certainly reads like it is coming from a biased point of view, but nonetheless, if what this person says about Blu-Ray is true then I am uninformed. I did not know it had such backing and if companies are investing in it then it is possible for Sony to get back some its losses through Blu-Ray.Comment

I wouldn't think Sony would commit suicide with PS3 by making it so low that they can't make up for their losses from the games and accessories. If they think they'll be losing too much money they'd either A. take out some of the costy features or B. up the price tag on the PS3.

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
And his argument is that a company isn't going to charge a low price for the sake of having a low price if they can't re-coup their losses in other areas. Sony is a corporation like any other that only cares about the bottom dollar, they won't charge a price they can't afford. And if Blu-Ray is as widely backed as the previous post says it is, they should be ok.Comment

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Why would the Head of Sony say the console is going to be work extra hours EXPENSIVE and then release the console at $399. It does'nt add up, however maybe this is Sony's ace in the hole, play up the high cost only to undercut it.
Wasn't the PSP suppose to be over $500 only to come out at $249?

Sony worth $50 Billion + again

Windows Vista does not back Blu Ray and this is why it will fail. Blu Ray is not well supported and this is Sony hype.Comment

Sony is going to lose about 2 billion dollars in the first three years with the PS3 according to Merrill Lynch. Sony could well be in financial trouble by 2009 especially if Blu Ray bombs which is possible.Comment

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Originally posted by MisfitEveryone seems to expect a price drop from Microsoft. Has a console ever had a significant price drop only a year after its release? Seems like they usually come two years later. Microsoft is already taking a big loss on each 360 they manufacture, I'd be surprised they'd lower the price by a significant margin if without cutting development costs by a lot. I know they have developed a new processor but they need to re-coup the R&D to create this new processor and the new 360's won't be out by the time the PS3 launches.
A couple of days later Sony announced the price dropping for the PS2 to $199. This was 19 months after the launch in NA.
At E3 2002 Microsoft announced the Xbox would be dropping to $199. This was 7 months after the launch in NA.
Nintendo announced the Gamecube would be dropping to $149 shortly after Microsoft announced the price drop for the Xbox. This was 7 months after the launch in NA.
Now Microsoft dropping the price of the Xbox was probably because of the competition.
I wouldn't count out a price drop for the 360 to be announced sometime later this year though. I think there is a good chance, although not nearly as significant of a drop as what's being rumored (Premium = $299/Core = $219).

I'm confused.
Some comments from him...- Prior to the PS2 launch - "You can communicate to a new cybercity. Did you see the movie The Matrix? Same interface. Same concept. Starting from next year, you can jack into The Matrix!"
- "The PS3 is not a game machine"
- "Microsoft shoots for the moon. Sony shoots for the sun"
- "The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline."
- "I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."
I've got more.
Now his comments about the price of the PS3- I'm not going to reveal [the PS3's] price today. I'm going to only say that it'll be expensive. I'm aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted towards households."
- PS3 is "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."
He could be telling the truth, that it will be expensive. But it's hard to tell with so many crazy things coming out of his mouth. And who's knows what he deems expensive? I think a lot of people would say $399 is expensive for game console. It wouldn't suprise me, if the PS3 launched at $399. I always thought it would be between $399-$499, so we'll see.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
