Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II

I don't see this posted, they ran out of test kits....

"the company is now apparently running short on developer hardware and leaving everyone in the gray. Our Mole (no, not an Insider, a Mole) dishes:

Sony has run out of PS3 test kits to give to developers. Since the announcement of the European launch being delayed, nobody has any idea what's going to happen with the PS3 port of F.E.A.R... specially since we only have the one PS3. And it's a devkit. In case you haven't seen those things, they sound like giant vacuum cleaners. They're reportedly ridiculously complicated to use, specially when upgrading the firmware. It has just the one controller, and it's not even the proper PS3 one even! It doesn't have those "innovative" changes from the PS3 controller, it's just a Dual Shock 2 with a USB Mini port." re hdmi -

      i could be wrong, but

i thought you will soon need it toplay br movies. no link, but pretty sure future br movies will require hdmi to view.

would be bad to buy non hdmi version ps3 and watch br thru component , and then 6 months later find out new br movies needs the hdmi to view.

There was an agreement reached that lasts until at least 2010 I believe that allows the Blu Ray videos over component.

I believe the PS2 was launched on a Thursday and I skipped school that Thursday. It wasn't part of the plan initially. All along we were going to just head to the 24 hour Wal-mart after school on Wednesday and wait in line until midnight to get a PS2. We did do that but when we got there the line was huge and there were already more people in line than there were PS2's available (why people continued to stand in line when they knew they weren't getting one is beyond me). One of my buddies actually paid I think 50 bucks for some kid's spot but someone ratted on him and the Wal-Mart people kicked him out. We all had our minds set on getting a PS2 and Best Buy wasn't far down the street so we just said "Hey, what the Hell? Let's do it." I have no desire to do it again, but it was fun. Part of the story for me too is I wanted a PS2 badly because that month my launch PS1 finally died and rather than drop another 100 or so bucks on a new PS1 I'd rather just upgrade to the PS2.

I should have also better clarified that it was completely unnecessary for us to camp out to get a PS2 (though one could also argue waiting all night was worth it to be one of the first to exit the store with the big blue box held over your head to thunderous applause - I was the second one to leave the store, most of the people in front of me got their's and then browsed the accessories some more). The line wasn't terribly long that night and didn't get long until around 5 am. One could conceivably go to a Best Buy before work and just go into work late that day if they really want a PS3. Now, there will be 20% fewer PS3's than there were PS2's so I don't know what the shipments will be liky but that particular Best Buy had at least 50 units (though I want to say the number was closer to 80, but my memory isn't perfect). Pretty much everyone who showed up before 6 got one. It is also my personal opinion that hype for the PS2 was greater than that of the PS3 so that may offset the fewer units some, but the PS3 is also launching closer to Xmas than the PS2 did....Also worth noting, only 4 people camped out at Circuit City in the adjacent parking lot that night so your chances may be better at a smaller retail chain that Best Buy or Wal-Mart. Though they will also have fewer units.

At any rate, the employees will be able to tell you if you can get a PS3 if you get in line in the morning so you won't be forced to wait around for nothing. Before they open they'll likely give everyone in a line a ticket to purchase a PS3 (I think I had #18 for the PS2) as well so at the very latest you should know if you're getting one by around 8 o'clock I would guess. Given that it will be colder than the PS2 launch, there will probably be less people camping out all night as well making the 5am arriver even more successful. So the moral of the story is, if you really REALLY want a PS3 its very attainable at launch. Just dress warmly, bring a thermos of coffee, an iPod, book, whatever, and get there as the sun is coming up.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will both need HDMI in the future because of the new security whatever these companies want enforced to prevent piracy. I believe that was posted over here a few months ago. The new formats aren't the problem (since players which can play both will arrive sooner rather than later), it's these companies which are forcing the consumer to upgrade to HDMI equipped HDTVs when not a lot of people even have HDTVs in the first place.

As for the PS3, the number of shipments and delays don't affect me one bit. I'll be getting one once the games I want arrive.

How many HDTV's do not have HDMI? My set is 2 years old and it has an HDMI connection on it.

There are more HDTVs without HDMI than with, even those with HDMI may not be compliant if it does not support HDCP.

While I can't give an exact figure, I'd bet any HDTV that was released 3 years ago wouldn't have HDMI. My set, which my family got on December '02, doesn't have one. While I certainly am wishing we get a HDMI capable HDTV in the future, that's not a guarantee. So in my personal opinion, these Hollywood bigwigs - who want these new protection techonology put in the first place - are just screwing every person who got a HDTV (with component cables etc.) who thought they were set for the next number of years then this comes along telling me, you, and everyone else you have to buy this new one otherwise your DVDs (HD-DVD, blu-Ray, maybe even normal DVDs) and games (on the newer formats anyway) won't work.

I hardly think that's fair. Do you?

I'm not sure WTF Sony is thinking, but this is crazy. Hopefully other's won't follow Sony's lead on this-1.....

Sony files new Patent, possibly changing the way people own/sell games

                              The idea is this:

                              1) You buy a game. Sony makes money.

                              2) You sell a game to GameStop right now, and they give you some money, spendable at GameStop, or if you choose, cash. You make money.

                              3) GameStop sells that game to somebody else. GameStop makes money.

Sony essentially is replacing step 2 and 3 here with one nice little condensed step.

2b) You sell a game to a friend. Your friend does not pay you in cash. He puts the game in his system, and the system checks for authorization. If you have authorized the sale, your friend pays a used game price (to Sony) of which you recieve a percentage in entitlement points (spendable only to Sony). Sony makes money x 2.

If you are now thinking “well when I play some games I will not be on-line with the console” to side-step the problem then think again as it is not such a difficult proposition to cache data on a permanent storage device included with every console ( I am looking at you PLAYSTATION 3’s HDD).

The Content of the disc cannot be accessed by the user console unless, upon completion of the “registration” process mentioned earlier in the article, the Host Server submits access permission.
The DISC UNIQUE ID 230 uniquely identifies the disc 110. The contents of the disc 110 cannot be played on the user console 115 or other devices without access permission for the disc 110.
The above comes str-8 from the Patent Filed by Sony..

Just because they have a patent on it doesn't mean it will be used. There was a lot of speculation about the PS3 ending used game sales as we knew it which didn't come to light so I wouldn't worry about something like this at the moment.
