Its best to up-strum and down-strum but several guitar players have made a living only down-strumming (James Hetfield comes to mind). Its definitly harder to play a solo that way but it can be done. I'd reccommend playing up and down and just get used to it that way. It might feel odd at first if you're used to just down-strumming and it may even throw your rhythm off at first but you'll get the hang of it and be playing faster in no time.

I only do down. If I do down then up I always do it too fast and end up taking a hit to my meter even if I hit the note. I don't hold it like a pick though like it seems most people do. I just use my thumb. Also I don't always use the strap,I'm tall though so it's ussally better without it for me.
Medium will seem as slow as easy after playing on expert for a whlie.Comment

I personally thought that was hilarious lol. Anywho, regarding strumming up and down or only down, I've been able to have great success strumming only down on hard mode, but I think I'm going to try and transition to up AND down. I've tried a few times and it really throws off my rhythm, but I think once I get used to it, it'll definitely help with some of the faster solos. As for sliding, I forget who asked. For a while, I had the hardest time getting used to sliding once I made the transition from medium to hard. All I can say is keep practicing. The notch on the yellow button is there for a reason, and that's to give you a reference point, so you don't get lost when you're sliding up and down. I admit, it takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you don't even think about sliding when you do it, it just becomes second nature.Comment

Just picked it up the other day, and I'm having a blast - I can see why everyone likes it so much. So easy to pick up and start playing (I blew through Easy with just one fail having never picked up a guitar in my life), but it sure gets tougher as you move up.
You guys are gonna laugh, but right now I'm struggling with No one knows on Medium - I can't even get through 2 verses of the baseline yet. For most of the medium songs I had to use my Star power to keep from bombing out during the solos - maybe I should stop trying to squeak by and actually get the fingerings right.
How did you guys progress through the game - did you go for 5 stars before moving on to another song, or just do what I did - just try to beat them?
Right now Bark at the Moon and Cowboys from Hell are a distant vision for me - I don't even want to think about them.
Oh, and I can up-and-downstrum just fine, I even hit the right buttons most of the time, but more than anything my timing when strumming is a bit off. Having played in a concert band during high school (no guitars, obviously), I'm not used to playing on an upbeat.
