Epilogue: CliffyB Talks Gears of War
Epic's flamboyant designer talks DLC, story cuts, chainsaws, Mad Love and graphic novels.

In this extensive eight-page interview, IGN spoke with Gears Designer Cliff Bleszinki (aka CliffyB) over the phone to get a feel for the game's brilliant reception and its instant appeal. Much to our relief, Bleszinki only said "Stop and Pop" once, he only swore a few times, and he used his quick wit and funny analogies to entertain us. What about downloadable content? Sequels? Auto-updates and new maps? In this candid interview, the master of Epic spin gives us real answers.

          Good read.

              Good read.
It is a good read but Douglass C. Perry sucks as an interviewer. How many ways are you going to ask about the damned chainsaw? How many ways can you ask if there's downloadable content on the horizon? Or the number or players in multiplayer matches?

The interviewer came off as as typical gamer who was lucky enough to get to talk to one of the guys who creates the games. A little professionalism would've been nice. I found myself getting annoyed everytime I'd scroll down and read the same question asked another way.

Some examples, this is from page 4 of the interview, with only the questions that were asked:

IGN: So Gears has four on four gameplay. One of the things I noticed about Gears is that the multiplayer, unlike other MP games, is just as pretty online as it is offline. Why doesn't Gears offer the ability to vie with more players? Was it a technical issue? Was it a design choice? A little of both?

IGN: So, let's say you're doing a sequel, are you considering adding more players to the versus online modes? Is there a possibility for eight on eight?

IGN: Are you thinking about it?

IGN: So when you look at Gears of War's multiplayer, do you say, "OK four on four worked great. We don't need to touch that. It's fine." Or do you look at it and say, "We can do more. But how do we make it better?" Does adding more players make it better? You could make bigger maps and add more players, right?

IGN: You listen to your fans and your customers. I know at IGN we have received dozens and dozens of letters about the game's four-on-four gaming.
This is why typically, I think IGN sucks ***.

EDIT: Oh, and the last question, a crappy reporter's desperate attempt to get some sort of "breaking news". Here's the question, with the incredibly lame part of it bolded...

IGN: For all those people who have been playing the hell out of Gears of War and are expecting downloadable content in the not-too-distant future, is there something, some little gem, you can leave them with? You know, for your fans?
You know, for your fans? Seriously? Are you that lame and that pathetic of a reporter that you've resorted to "You know, for your fans?". Wow...how incredibly freakin' lame. He shouldn't be allowed to do another interview ever again.

I'm going to get killed for saying this but I actually grew bored of GoW after 30 minutes. The graphics were great but it felt like I've played this game before.
                I've actually enjoyed RB6:Vegas a lot more.

I swore it seemed like Cliffy B kept getting more annoyed with his responses as the interview carried on.

This is an awesome game and very addictive. Before accidentally erasing my profile I was deep into conference play in my NC A&T legacy on CH2K7. In my restarted legacy I'm only 4 games in due to the addictiveness of Gears of War. I think one of the reasons that I can't stop playing is the fact that it isn't like other games where you play a mission, save and then another mission loads up. It nevers ends.

                    I LOVE IT!

I got burned out on Gears of War for some reason. I got it two weeks after it came out and I played it alot but now I just don't feel like playing it anymore.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I find that I have more fun with this if I play it a little every couple days rather than playing it for 3 hours straight. It keeps the game fresh and I haven't really gotten burned out on it.

I'm sorta with you, while I enjoyed it, I am more relieved than anything that I beat it. I got it at launch and just beat it a couple of days ago. Part of the reason is I would get kind of "sea sick" playing it, I would literally be sweating after playing for about an hour. This could also be because I'm a fat bastard.
