Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
All I have to say about this game is that I am addicted and am amazed at the quality of gaming I have received.
I don't usually get addicted to games, and I am not much of a gamer but this game has glued me to my seat and I must say, I am ADDICTED. Although teh campaign is pretty short. I am almost done. BTW, online is amazing aswell, with a friend.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I need a little help, guys. My wife bought me this game for Christmas, but got a used copy from EB. Only problem is that there isn't an instruction book inside. Is there a way to read a copy on the web? Any help will be appreciated.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I would go to EB and let them know and they probably will give you an instruction booklet from another used copy. Or, I would go to a rental store, rent GOW, and ask them to pull the manual for you.Comment

I bought it today and haven't looked at the instruction booklet yet... is it really that hard?Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
L-Stick: Move
D-Pad: Switch Weapons
R-Stick: Look/Click to zoom
Back: See multiplayer scoreboard
Start: Pause
LB: See objectives and squad status/orders(hold LB to bring up the squad commands)
LT: Aim
RB: Reload(press once for standard reload, press twice for quick-load, you want to hit it the second time while the moving line is in the small solid white line under your gun in the top left of the screen, do it correctly and it will speed you up and give your gun extra damage for a short time period, mess up and you gun will jam and it will take longer)
RT: Shoot/throw grenade
Y: Look at point of interest
X: Use/interact(an indicator will pop up on screen when you can push this)
B: Melee(hold for chainsaw)
A: Evade, get into/out of cover and all of the other cover moves. The indicator on the bottom of the screen while in cover will tell you what move you will perform by pushing A. Either jump over current cover, switch to adjacent cover, roll out of cover or stand up from cover. Pushing A with no indicator will simply remove you from cover.
While in cover use RT to shoot with little accuracy, hole LT to get an aiming cursor, but you will expose yourself.
Not sure if this is what you wanted, but with the controls you should have at least enough to play the game. The tutorial explains most things well enough anyway.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
Pretty funny, I just picked up a "Used" copy of the game and am having fun with it. I say "used" because I was intending on buying a used copy from gamecrazy with my gift cards from Christmas. Well, they didn't have any but then I saw a guy I knew who was returning a "used" copy (still in the wrapping!) He is a part of a product testing team and gets free copies of games. He receives X360 games but he doesn't have one so he returns those for store credit. So, I grabbed that one up right away.Comment

Actually, I haven't played yet, but I'm one of those people that has to read the instructions before I start playing. Can't help it, I just HAVE to read 'em first.Comment

Not sure, but here are the controls listed in the book, I'm sure you want to read it for other things as well, but the controls are the main part:
L-Stick: Move
D-Pad: Switch Weapons
R-Stick: Look/Click to zoom
Back: See multiplayer scoreboard
Start: Pause
LB: See objectives and squad status/orders(hold LB to bring up the squad commands)
LT: Aim

RT: Shoot/throw grenade
Y: Look at point of interest
X: Use/interact(an indicator will pop up on screen when you can push this)
B: Melee(hold for chainsaw)
A: Evade, get into/out of cover and all of the other cover moves. The indicator on the bottom of the screen while in cover will tell you what move you will perform by pushing A. Thanks, I really appreciate you taking the time to post the controls. I think I'll try to give it a go with what you've put in the post.
Thanks to all who have taken the time to respond.Comment

Holy hot damn. I know I'm late to the party, but this game is amazing. I was playing co-op with a buddy last night and totally lost track of the time. Before I knew it, it was 1:00 A.M. The cover system is genius and once you get the hang of it, it adds so much to the game. That Berserker was pretty damn tough.Originally posted by billmaticRadman is more like the ******** homeless man's version of Okur.Comment

Wow, I was holding out on getting this game, it looked good but I just wasn't sure if I'd like it. I got it at Target last night since it was $40 and I gotta say this game is incredible. One of my friends got it for Christmas so were planning on going through the game co-op. Very glad I finally gave in.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I'm totally addicted to this game, and the last shooter type game I played was freaking Goldeneye for the N64, so it's definitely been awhile.
Every time I sit down to play, I keep telling myself I will stop when I reach a good stopping point. Unfortunately, that never happens, so usually I play until I get dirty looks from the wife. It's truly an amazing game, and I haven't even messed with any of the online or co-op features. That sounds like a freaking blast.Xbox Live Gamertag: MizzouBrentComment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
Same here, I finally got the game as a Christmas present and it is amazing. The cover system is a totally unique take on the shooter. I thought it would make for a slower paced game, but the onslaught of enemies(most of the time) and the quick healing times both help speed the game up tremendously. I'm done with the first three acts and I don't think it has been repetative at all. Its a shooter, of course you are going to have to kill countless numbers of the same enemy, but it isn't like they don't have any alternate gameplay methods. From the car driving, the boss fights and the little puzzles within the game, they keep it much, much, much more fresh than most shooters.
I also love the randomness they built into the game. I died on the first Act when Emergance Holes started popping up all around you. So I reloaded and got in a favorable position and had a grenade ready to close the first hole. To my amazement, the first hole opened at a completely different location the second time. Later in the game when you have to walk over flimsy wood planks with beasts below waiting to eat you, I also was amazed that which wood would break is random.
Terrific game, even though I've only been playing for a little over a day and I know I am only a few hours from finishing, it is still an amazing experience to go through. Maybe the best thing I can say about the game is that the most intense part of the game for me, so far, was the first part of the third act when there weren't many enemies attacking, I was literally on the edge of my seat expecting something to jump out at any second. I haven't played a game like that since the first Resident Evil.Comment

Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread
I got GOW yesterday and I have been doing the single player campaign where I just finished the first act. I just loaded the game up again to play and went to continue the campaign but after I select eh difficulty it goes to the screen like it's loading for a few seconds and then goes back to the select difficulty screen. I have tried turnign it off and restating but same thing everytime.
Has anyone had this happen and have any suggestions? It just won't load.Comment
