Its very true but what I can't figure out is why Sony just doesn't raise the price of the PS3 to $999 until they have more to sell. Supply and demand have allowed people to make a ton of money off ebay. Why not make the money yourself, especially since they are losing $100 to $200 off each console sold (complete speculation based on past articles)? If Sony could sell the first 2 million units at $300-$400 more than what they are selling right now, it would be a ton of money for them and stem the ebay thing as well. As soon as the market stopped paying crazy money for the PS3s, they could drop the price ensuring you always had some PS3s available along with a ton of profit. Sure it looks like price gouging but they could at least justify it as a defense to the violence and ebay craziness. They could also donate a certain amount to charity to counter the negative press.

You're idea is good in theory but it wouldn't work. If people knew that the machine would cost much less in the near future most if not all would wait it out. Plus they would get even more negative press of taking it to gamers.

Look at all the negativity they received from their decision to price the machines at $500 and $600 dollars.

I find it funny because its jacked up that ppl want to inflate the price on something for greed purposes. You can be mad all you want, I say these ppl get what they deserve. It seems everyone is in on making a quick buck without putting in any serious efford. And if you think pre-ordering or sitting in the cold for some hours is hard work, tell that to the ppl spend years in school just to start a career.

I agree with the potential negative press but people don't wait it out during the early shipments. Its why you have everyone selling their PS3s on ebay for over $2000 (or over 80 million). Everyone knows they could wait a few months and pay retail but they willingly pay stupid money because they can.

Its the same mentality people have when using the legal system as a lottery system. When that Dallas coach sued McDonald's for 1.9 million because a rat was in his food, I'm pretty sure greed was heavily involved in that number.

it would be perceived as arrogant. How many consoles have succeeded at being priced well above what the common consumer views as a fair price? Regardless of what they are fetching on ebay now, the ebay prices will drop significantly after christmas. The 360 ebay money making schemes didn't last much longer than that either.

Sony probably doesn't even care. This gives the ps3 the coveted status of being a hyped christmas product, much like the tickle me elmo hype.

I think you are totally right but there is some precedent. When the Red Wings were a hot ticket in Detroit, people used to scalp playoff tickets for big bucks. Mike Illitch decided to hike the ticket prices way up the next year to stop the scalping and horde those extra profits to himself. There was a bit of a media backlash but ultimately never developed into a big issue.

Like I said, it would be bad publicity/arrogance but they could donate $100 to $200 of that sale to a charity to make them look better as well.

The fact is that anyone who wanted a PS3 could have gotten one. The launch date was no secret. They are limited at this time, and the people who have one have every right to sell it for profit. This is capitalism at it's finest. There's no need to feel the sellers deserve anything negative to happen to them because they are "greedy", or more like others are jealous.

At most, ps3 sellers can make maybe a $300 profit off one console. This isn't going to last long, and is 100% legit to do. The reply you posted sounds like you're one of the ones ruining people's auctions.

I find it hilarious. People were lining up and pre-ordering just to sell it on eBay so I have no bad feelings for the sellers, I know there's way to prevent from something like that happening so it's there own fault.

LOL, naw man, I'm not the one ruining ppls auctions. I'm patient enough to wait till next year to try to nab one. Thats if I still want one. Some ppl have lives and responsibilites to the point where they cant take off work or neglect thier family to sit out in the cold for 2 days waiting for a video game console. I understand its legit but I'm just not the greedy type. Excuse me for having morals. I bought my daughter that new Elmo THX doll some months ago and I could of been greedy and sold it for 300 on Ebay when I only paid 50 for it. How do you think I would of felt if I sold it for profit when my daughter really desired it? Thats what alot of these sellers are doing. Making it hard for ppl who really want it in the name of money. And no I dont blame them, its all of society thats really messed up.

Again, nothing hilarious about this. The people that got one have the right to do whatever they want with it. They can play it, sell it, or through it off the roof of a building. Ebay is an established marketplace, and should be treated as such. If someone has something to sell, that should be a safe place to sell it. There isnt really much sellers can do to keep people from jacking their auctions. They can monitor the auction 24 hours a day and reject rediculous bids, but that does nothing to stop the snipers in the last seconds of the auction.

Many people use ebay as their primary store front to provide them with a place to make a living. My mom does this selling antiques. I've done it in the past with sportscards. I hope ebay can punish those that place fake bids, monitarily. Ebays store front is no different than a brick and mortar store front IMO. How would you like it if someone messed with your business like this? Probably wouldnt be well received by many.

To those that find it funny or think its OK for this to happen because of greed or it being OK to hate on a person trying to make some extra cash, that speaks of your ethics and morality. Your being little and jealous.

Bottom line. These consoles, whether sold in a store through a preorder, by waiting in line, or on ebay are eventually going to people who want them and have put a price on them. Some were willing to pay more than others, and its really rather simple.
