    Re: Left 4 Dead

I think you guys are hitting on some of the points, but beyond being different types of first-person shooters, there are some things even at the psyche level that I think play into it.

First off, I do agree that L4D is an experience that is best enjoyed with friends (but you can say that about most any online-based game).

Beyond that though, COD is the type of game where you can hop in by yourself and succeed. You can feel like a total badass while just running and gunning, and that's what the COD series really nailed during the last few versions especially. I mean you can still play a more realistic/hardcore game-type as well, but either way there are options.

And, I think in addition to that, COD is the type of game where you are constantly on attack. You don't sit around and wait for people to shoot (there are campers obviously, but I would argue it's pretty hard to succeed whilst camping in that game). You go out, you attack, you get perks, and you rack up kills. It's straight forward and it's a game where you always are building towards something.

L4D is a game where you have to get into a different mindset. It is really about survival. In the game I don't feel like a badass most of the time, I'm simply trying to watch my back and my teammates and not die. You are tying to make it from point A to point B without getting mauled, so you're not necessarily in pursuit of the next kill. That's a big difference between the two games beyond just base-level stuff like controls and tactile feel.

If you hop in by yourself and play with randoms or the CPU, there just isn't that draw for most people, because surviving by yourself is just scary or well, not worth it. So you survived, kudos, but that's not a good bonus in a video game by itself without other elements building on it.

COD will always give you bonuses, say good job in so many words, and make you feel awesome all over. It's a total pat on the ***-like game, and the solo attitude can work.

L4D is at a basic level about just not dying, and thus, the reward is simply survival. You make your own fun along the way, and giggling with your friends as you escape a horde, or make fun of someone when you maul them in Versus mode are things that become more enjoyable at the social level, but you get those social perks through the game.

Left 4 Dead 'Survival Pack' lunges for Xbox 360 on April 21

Valve has revealed that its upcoming DLC pack (which is free, by the way) for Left 4 Dead will be available to Xbox 360 gamers on April 21. For the unaware, the pack includes a new Survival mode, which pits the human survivors against wave after wave of attacking zombies. The update also includes Versus campaign support for two more maps: Death Toll and Dead Air. Let the undead griefing begin!

            Re: Left 4 Dead

You know, something strange about the whole Mic or no Mic thing. I actually purchased my first mic last month just for L4D. I was always being booted for having no Mic. Well, let me tell ya something strange. Ive actually won more games playing without the Mic rather than with it. Grant it, If I have a skilled team, I likely dont need a Mic but communication is key to victory. I played 4 games this weekend and went 3-1 in them. The one I lost we had every player with a Mic and they were using it. The other three saw just one game with Mic's being utilized. The other two had no discussions or usuage of there mics.
Now maybe this could be just based upon the other teams experience but it seems like the team work was there without Mic's...Dont know. All I do know is I am so addicted to this game. My wife wants to kill me when I get on. Cant wait for April 21 because Versus mode at the Airport is gonna kick some ***!

By the way, my tag is the same as my log-in name here so add me or look for me when your online....

me and 3 of my buddies played this on sunday as a team... this was the first time i had a team where i knew everybody... we just dominated the other teams when we played... in fact i told them that i have to go in about 20 min and we should just rush through the last two levels on no mercy and we ran through like it was nothing... and when we were the zombies we stoped them before they got to the elevater and on the last level... only one made it off the roof and he was pulled down by a smoker... we finished and i was able to get where i needed to be on time

Maybe we can get more playing again (including me) as we come towards the DLC release. Especially now that all the big spring game drops are kinda over...

My roommate and I have been playing a lot recently. Just running through the game on easy and having fun killing zombies/seeing how long we can hold off the final chapter spots.

Damn they get incredibly hard when you start dealing with two or three tanks at the same time, along with swarms of zombies and random hunters/smokers/boomers.

Well, we run through it on easy to see how quickly we can get to the final chapter.

You'd be...amazed how hard holding off the horde at the end is after rescue arrives even on easy.

Plus, most of the time we are not completely sober, so easy helps us still enjoy it.
