Never played a Fable game or read anything about it. What should I expect if I pick this up at some point?
I don't like the Yankees, I like the Red Sox, I don't like the Lakers, I like the Celtics, I hate the Canadiens and I love the Bruins. Soccer is the best sport on Earth, but most Americans are too ignorant to realize it. I am American.

      IGN UK Review - 9.5

Invest in Albion, its inhabitants and its history; embrace the power you’re afforded to shape yourself and the world around you and Fable II is an astonishing achievement. It’s not an easily definable, singular vision but an impressive, unparalleled attempt at empowering the player in ways no other game has before. While individual elements might struggle to shine on close scrutiny, it’s their harmonious integration that makes Fable II such a captivating, unforgettable experience. Yes, it breaks little new ground by traditional RPG standards but no game has come close to offering the kind of surprising, compelling, emotional immersion that permeates Fable II. It’s a game that rewards experimentation and exploration, not dogged single-minded persistence, in subtly brilliant ways. And while it’s true that my fat, greedy whore-killing hero has probably had his time in Albion, the world’s constant flux means the game still has other stories to tell – and I’m looking forward to hearing them all.
      Kikizo Review - 9

Lionhead has finally delivered on the promises its head spindoctor Peter Molyneux has been spouting for the past year.
Fable II sets a new bar with game-world interaction. Grand Theft Auto IV certainly presented huge scope for extra-curricular activities, however you can comfortably spend a dozen hours with Fable II forming relationships and business ventures without (ad)venturing near a dungeon or story-progressing quest. Express your feelings (of love or contempt) for your fellow inhabitants; buy and sell stock or invest in properties and raise or lower the rent. Tenants can hate you for your cold profiteering or you can be a generous puritan and keep rent down to a minimum.

All your actions, from a simple thumbs up to someone in the street, to the slaughter of an entire community for your sadistic amusement, have implications which affect the way people perceive you and treat you. And one promise Mr Molyneux has certainly delivered on - being good is its own reward; a pure character will have much shallower pockets than one prepared to bend - or even ignore - the rules.
      Videogamer Review - 9

The video game industry is often criticised for churning out carbon copy shooters, delivering little more than a different way to mass murder hundreds of identikit enemies. Fable II is different. It's a game that makes you think about what you're doing. It hasn't perfected the RPG, and in truth isn't close to doing so, but it's a massive step in the right direction and a beautiful game to boot. If you think you have what it takes to be a righteous hero, give Fable II a try. You might not be the angel you think you are.
      Planet Xbox 360 Review - 9.5

Players should expect a very rousing time through their questing in Fable 2. It’s a much more satisfying experience than Fable 1 and has a little of everything for all types of gamers. If you’re into mini-games and buying every item in the game, Fable 2 has that for you through jobs, pub games and the ability to buy almost every house and store in the game. If you’re into quests and combat, Fable 2 employs some of the finest and freshest missions (main and side stories) I’ve played through in a long time. Fable 2 also introduces unique, original cooperative play, which will hold your attention until at least the end of the year. Regarding games released up until this point in 2008, it’s easy to label Fable 2 as the best title of the year for the Xbox 360 – no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
      Arstechnica - Buy

But where the original game failed, its successor triumphs. Believe it or not, much of what Molyneux has spent the last two years pitching to journalists and fans has come to fruition in what can only be described as one of the most engaging RPG experiences of the year. Fable II may not be the best RPG ever made, and it lacks depth in a few key areas, but it succeeds in creating an experience that is undeniably fun, fresh, and rich in content. In many ways, it feels as though the original Fable was only a demo for Fable II and not a proper predecessor. It even succeeds in a way that many games don't in that, like the prototypical socially-perpetuated title The Sims, it creates stories unique to the player that beg to be retold to friends outside of the game.

That is not a spoiler at all IMO but to answer your question I am not sure what the Death Free Combat means. The others in this thread may be able to help you out.

What happens when you die in Fable II is you fall down and essentially get knocked out. You will lose some experience when this happens, then spring back up and continue. Also, if you take to many blows or get knocked out to many times over time, you will develop scars.

Deciding to put off questing for that rare treasure you've been seeking for weeks on your one day off from real-life work because the townspeople want your blood for overcharging, your wife is pregnant with your third child and she wants more money and nice furniture for the family, your ex-wife is sleeping with the blacksmith at the store you own, and your first-born son is attacking the neighbor's chickens with the toy sword you gave him.
