Is this game closer to Mass Effect than Oblivion?

I'd like to rent it first, but the only place that carries it is Block Buster and it's $10 just to rent a stinking game.
Honestly....this game is it's own genre.
If you like both shooters and RPG's ...even somewhat...you will really enjoy this game.
One of the best I've played.

Thanks Knight. I've actually been addicted to this thread. I've read about the 'quick ending' issue and how to avoid it.
And it really does sound like people are having a blast with this game.

I like the premise behind the game and the targeting system sounds cool too.
But I've read that the PS3 version is not as nice looking as the 360's, which worries me.

But I might make the plunge. I have Uncharted now and so far I'm loving it. But it's nice to go between two different types of games.

      Thanks for the advice.

        Re: Fallout 3

I played this a bit for the time yesterday and, much like Oblivion with the ES series, it took me a little while to even realize that this is Fallout. Then I played it for about 2 hours today and I'm loving it. The original Fallout is probably in my top 5 favorites and certainly in my top 10 (never really got in to FO2), so I'm glad it transitioned well.

Well i just finished the game after putting 10 hours into it without doing any side missions or that. I was kinda disappointed with the ending. I thought it was one of the "once you finish the story, do whatever you want" games but i was wrong. I was loving the game so much until that. I was pretty stupid and didn't make a lot of saves, common mistake i make on RPG's. I was hoping i'd play this as much as i did with both the KOTOR series. Put at least 25 hours into both games. I'm thinking of restarting but i'm just dissappointed.

I've put in about 20 hours, and I'm barely through the main quest at all. If you wanted to, you could go through it again with a different character and make different decisions which would still be fun.

Just curious, what level were you when you finished? There's no way you were in the high teens only playing 10 hours.

Can someone tell me the trick to getting to the Galaxy Radio and National Archive buildings? I was wandering all over the wastland and kept hitting dead ends over and over again. Is there a certain subway station I need to venture through?

The only locations I have on my map in the Mall area are Rivet City, Jefferson Memorial (can you actually see the statue there or is it just underground stuff?), some Russian drinker's place (Dozy's or something), and Grayditch.

You gotta go underground. It's all about the subway system. There's an entry just outside Rivet City. Start there, and you'll find your way.

That's what I figured after I was wandering all afternoon, LOL.

                  Thanks!

I've put about 15 hours in now, I've just finished with Zone 8, (the one with Vault 101 and Megaton) for those who have the guide. I've gone through every building and marker on the map with the exception of one, which it tells me to go to it after I complete a quest in another zone. I haven't even touched the main quest except for the Megaton stuff yet. I'm going to go through each zone as much as I can first. This game is just so great and so much to do.

Did you do the stuff with Moira Brown in Megaton yet?

Yeah, it's pretty much a waste of time. It's so hard being a Paragon in this game, there's many times I want to just shoot someone such as Moira Brown, but I'm trying my best not to do any stealing or anything bad of that nature. The only thing I see that she's good for is my future household decorations. The only bad thing that's happened thus far with me is the guy with the explosives attached to him, and whoa!!! what about the town of Andale? That's some screwed up stuff.

I'm sure a lot of you guys know this already..When lock picking the bobby pin has 3 attempts until it breaks, if you try twice and back out of the lock menu and then re enter it will be a perfect bobby pin again. You can potentially go the whole game with one pin.

Never thought of that. I do that with the terminals, but I will do that with the bobby pins now too.

I haven't checked that place out yet...where is it?

I just tackled the following quest last night:
                              Spoiler

...and I used nearly every health pack and food item I was carrying!

I'm also trying to be good, but I've allowed a couple instances of bad karma...mostly when I see some weapon I want or ammo I'm short on.

Another question for those who've gone through the game.

                                I beated it today.

Overall, I enjoyed it. Not as much as the original, but pretty damn good. I have a few early saves, so I was going to go back and do the side quests.

My question though, I'm probably going to start a new game, and was planning on going mostly strength, big guns, explosives, and energy (I went with small guns, sneak, and lockpicking as my main skills) and was wondering if there is actually enough firepower to do this.
